Killer squares. I love them I have about 120 Sq ft of some square stock that looks just like that rose wood. My old neighbor passed away from pancreatic cancer very suddenly his wife and he had no children and he was a wood worker. Made picture frames and keepsake boxes. And i was named in his belongings as the sole recipient of all of his hand tools and hardwood collection. And I call it collection as there was about 30 or 40 species that I was only able to identify 10 or 15 easily and some others with minimal research. But thar particular spec. Has evaded my discovery untill now I believe it is that same rose wood you made the squares out of

A picture is worth a thousand words but a few words of explanation along the way is even better.

Does the curved profile on the tip have a use or is it purely for looks? Nice work btw.

Nice squares! Do you recall the thickness of the brass stock?

Love these squares are you going to put out the planes and where you got the materials?
@JDCDDesgins7 жыл бұрын
+Elizabeth Vail you can actually find he plans online on the "woodsmith" website. Iv tweaked the plans on these squares to make them bigger to fit my needs. As for the material, I picked up the brass from a local hobby shop and the wood I picked up from lee valley, which is rose wood.

Very nicely done the only thing i thought you should do was to somehow nicely put your name and date Mae on it as a retired Woodworker thats the type of tool that would be ice to be passed on to future generations and i think it would be cool if a Great Great Grandchild wound up with it in their own tool collection it would be cool to know who built it and when IMO i have many tools that were my Fathhers and Grandfathers ad there is always something special whenever i use them for their intended purpose i consider myself to be a better Craftsman than my Father at least in Woodworking mainly because i have more patience than he ever did and i dont mind spending the extra cost to purchase. Highe quality lumber than my Dad ever did he was rhe type of guy that would pick up used materials and refurbish it including pulling nails and straightening them out to reuse that can very often lead to mis alignment issues when fasteing two boards together me I would always use new and high quality fasteners he called it frugal but i always think of it as being cheap he was famous for not buying quality tools for himself unless it was mechanic style tools and wrenches

I agree with you, I have a lot of tools that have been passed down thought my family. Some of the tools have a lot of history behind them too. Iv also spent some time refurbishing a few hand tools that have been passed down to me. Its a great feeling using tools that have a story behind them!

When it comes to the accuracy with the tools i make i check multiple times. I checked this square with 3 different combination squares and straight edges. the super glue held hold the brass in place when its ready to drill.

did you check it without the masking tape on?

Just out of curiosity: what is the purpose of the "curvy" tip?
@JDCDDesgins7 жыл бұрын
+Carramba86 H Honestly it serves no purpose besides decoration. It makes the piece more pleasing to the eye.

Nicely done Out of curiosity wouldn't epoxy make a longer more permanent bond ? Instead of instant glue? My basis for the question is i was always told the longer a glue takes to cure the stronger the bond usually is That may be different now days with the invention of different formulas and ingredients as i do know many glues and resins have been made to work in different ways over the years I actually do have a freind who is a retired chemist who worked the resin business developing epoxies for the electronic fields
@Hudson44265 жыл бұрын
Craig Monteforte my guess it is only for a temporary hold and the mechanical fasteners are what hold it in place for longevity
