Hi you should turn them 3 times. First place the tortilla/roti onto a hot pan and let it change colour. This should only take 5-10 seconds, then flip and cook on the other side until it has some browning (u can lift the edge and check), then flip it for a final time and press it down with a spatula or tea towel in multiple places while rotating it flat. This will make the inside puff up and uth air so the texture is extremely soft and enjoyable. Hope it helps.

This is the method I learned in Nepal/India. On the 3rd side I press with a dishcloth instead of a spatula. So fun to watch it puff up. Don’t need the baking powder either.

@@aishabangtan2057 rotis are made from a different kind of wheat flour, she is using white flour while rotis are made from atta. she says "wheat flour" but that has a different meaning outside of India. You also can tell from the way the dough is behaving that this is not atta. The other difference is the fat. tortillas ALWAYS have fat in them, usually a solid fat but here she's using oil. rotis traditionally are JUST flour and water, sometimes salt. some people add oil to their rotis but usually not much.

@spaceshipearthresident4283
@spaceshipearthresident4283 Жыл бұрын
Both are used. What is most common depends on the region you live in or from. I'm fronteriza norteño from the Tamaulipas/Nuevo Leon región and the only time we use corn tortillas is when we are trying to loose weight. Some parts of México do not use corn tortillas or typical flour tortillas at all. They only use bolillos or tlayudas.
@inkenhafner7187
@inkenhafner7187 Жыл бұрын
The corn flour that is used for tortillas in Mexico is not so easily available in Germany if you don't live in a larger city and it's not cheap (and insanely expensive if you order it online). Wheat flour is what is available for little money in every grocery store here, just as corn is in Mexico. And you say yourself: wheat tortillas are not the norm in Mexico but they exist and you call them tortillas, too. So you can have two different perspectives on authenticity: do you make it authentic ingredient-wise and turn the thing everyone eats and can afford into something fancy - or do you stick to the idea of it being for everyone and made from what is the most available and affordable option? For every day and everyone the wheat tortilla makes more sense in central Europe. What do you think about it? (I'd really like to know)

It's so funny, I grew up in a town with a very Mexican culture and half my family is Mexican but I didn't learn how to make tortillas until I moved to Germany, and I got the recipe from a girl from the Czech Republic 😹 and actually you don't even need the baking powder, just flour, salt, hot water and oil. I would make fresh tortillas for breakfast everyday with rice , egg, and a little bit of sauer sahne and hot sauce. I was surviving on about 5€ a week and one meal a day but I mean I could actually do it there! In the United States that would never work. Once I started working some places would have free food (mostly fruits and Musli) for the employees so the days when I would be there I would have a little more for the week. As a freelancer I wasn't eligible for any help services (and Germans are very strict with rules, I once waited in line at a church early in the morning because they gave out food to in need people but I didn't have the paperwork that qualified to receive what they were giving so they made me leave). But even so, while that experience sucked (cause it was embarrassing to be there and even more embarrassing to be turned away ) and even though I was really broke at the time im very grateful I was able to make it in my little bit of money a week and the help I did get from friends and neighbors and how safe I felt all the time their and to finally be liberated from having a car . I love you Berlin and I miss you terribly 💔

She's from Germany and here basically everything that resembles the shape of a tortilla is sold as either tortilla wraps or dürüm wraps regardless of what flour it is made from. Kinda weird but that's probably why she called it tortilla.
