Edit: Nevermind he explains it about halfway through the video. It might be motivated by similar reasons too! Regurgitation is obviously famous as the way a lot of birds feed their chicks. Cats will bring injured or dead animals for their kittens play with and learn how to hunt with as well. So essentially, both a toucan regurgitating food and a cat bringing you "gifts" are trying to feed or teach what they see as a big helpless member of their species.

Your pet loving you and feeding you is the sweetest thing! My cat once caught a mouse and dropped in on me in bed to feed me, while I was asleep. The mouse was still alive and needed rescuing to be put outside. My cat did not understand why I didn't eat his gift. It's a good thing he didn't try to stick it in my mouth! Way back in HS I woke up to my cat licking the back of my tongue tongue, her head inside my mouth. I naturally gagged and coughed up kitty litter crumbs from her previous lickings. She scratched me as she darted away. I don't know if she was just curious or intentioned, or if there was a bug or something, or even if my mouth was open. But waking up being frenched by my cat was disgusting. Of course Luna cared about me as I loved her, but I much prefer our body fluids stay put.

Do you encourage food foraging? Like a hanging hollow coconut shell w a hole in the side. Intended as a bird house but it could be adapted for the 2cans.

Using a coconut or something like that would end up being unsanitary because of the fruit. More chance of bacteria or mold growth. A plastic bottle with a hole cut in it works great so I do that from time to time but you'll notice there was a big chunk of watermelon out that I was trying to encourage them to pick from themselves rather than me cutting pieces up for them. I've also used little hanging skewers that I can put chunks of fruit on.

Trust me, parrots like weird things as toys too. Yes they love to chew but they also always seem to find the best found toys to play with. Dobby LOVES plastic pop caps, and when he's chewing up the wrong things a quick bottle cap will distract him and keep him busy sometimes for a hour. We have all kinds of toys for him but caps, pieces of paper, any blankets or fabric, the corners of wall trim etc are the best toys.

He's a Maximilian Pionus about 8 I think, He's my fourth Maxi. I had Nerd and his brother Ferd in 78, Ferd died suddenly a few years in and Nerd and I mourned and bonded and he was my buddy for 31 years. When he passed I was found Lurch, who at first was scared to death and mad at the world. After a mere 5 years he decided I was trustworthy and his friend but a few years later he accidentally escaped due to a dumb mistake 😔 So I was given Dobby when a friend knew what I went through to get Nerd happy and she couldn't keep him anymore and thought I'd make a good Dad. He's the most outgoing, socialized, gentle Maxi I've ever known.

For my cats I made a very simple toy. Take a yard of rope or cord and attach a toy at both ends. You can wrap that around her perch or wherever you like to wrap it around. It doesn't have to be a yard of course.

There is an exotic bird store (family owned) near my house that actually has a toucan section! They don’t sell toucans but they sell things for toucans. The owner of the shop owns 2 toucans and loves them so much. If you’re ever in NY, I recommend it!
