You want to keep the warmth inside and not escape outside. Therefore, you should place the shiny part inside, not outside.
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Correct but I’m this case I use the sliding door one in the summer and want to shiny on the outside. The effect of shiny on outside for keeping the cool in the summer outweighs effect of it on the inside in winter

Very happy with how they thermal covers have turned out
@CMKvanlife2 жыл бұрын
I bought some of the same thermal material and made a divider between the cab and the hab area, backed it with some checked fabric and we can use it as a picnic blanket too - keeps the old bones warm and dry on the beach :)

This is why motorhome style windows make more sense for a 4 season van but looks good solution to conventional glass windows.
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
I agree, but I do personality prefer the look of glazed windows. I do know some Nordic friends who have double glazed versions of my glass windows. Wish I had known about them at the time

Great info and very well made video. Those fasteners are an incredible idea. I had homemade ones in my previous van. In this one, I'll see how Southern Germany is during winter. Glad to know where to find the materials as well. Now all I need is a mum with a sewing machine. 🤣🚚

Hope that helps. I hadn’t seen anyone using fasteners like this before but it works well

Great vid and great timing. I'm sat in my van atm and there's one hell of a cold coming in from my back doors. I've done a great job (so far) in insulating the whole van - and covering all internal metal, (not got round to putting blinds up at the windows yet...) but I'm defo gonna get this set up you've shown implemented as this van is bloody freezing atm (no d. heater installed yet) but we're getting there! It seems the more I get done, the more new things that need doing! :)
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
All the best on your project and build! get that diesel heater in and stay warm!
@bearhugman2 жыл бұрын
Great vid, thanks. I seem to recall in one of your Arctic vlogs that you had left something on the floor and it was frozen. even though you have the heat going through the night. That surprised me! Question, do you regret not doing more insulation under the floor? Or, perhaps knowing how smart you are, a heated floor! Maybe using glycol lines via some kind of heat exchanger outputting from your diesel heater. Cheers from New Zealand
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Air temperature inside the van during the Arctic trip was always 21° with the heating on, but the floor was still minus temperatures. It’s currently 25mm pir board with 18mm ply on top. I don’t think more insulation would help much more. Underfloor heating could’ve potentially been a solution. I have one and two friends who have done it.
@alzathoth Жыл бұрын
i always thought that the shiny reflective surface was supposed to face inward to reflect the heat inward keeping the interior warm.
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
Reflective surface system insulation is to reducing radiant heat gain, to reflective radiant heat like the sun. So in the summer the shiny side points out. In this case, the air mass inside the vehicle is heated by the diesel heater, that isn’t radiant heat so nothing much to reflect. In this case, I’m using the quilted properties of the insulated fabric and not the reflective side.

How long before you run out of air? Or drown in humidity? 🤿.
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Never, there is a maxxfan in the roof which is almost on at least 10% for ventilation in winter as well as summer. Humidity in the van is almost always below external humidity during the winter and during the last arctic was on Average below 20%
@CaptainK0072 жыл бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures hmm. 20% isn’t that a bit low? Chapped lips, sore throat. Ceiling fan…. In or out? Let’s have some thermal and data on the next trip into the freezer. I have a Widebeam boat on a river, humidity and condensation always keep you on your toes. Aluminium window frames without thermal breaks. Why they still install them is beyond me. Still, next year, double glazing it is. In the meantime full on wood burner, central heating and heaps of ventilation
@MispronouncedAdventures2 жыл бұрын
In the extreme cold of Arctic winter it’s dry it’s so cold. The external Sensor can’t even give a humidity reading it’s so level and the internal ones were 20% or less ( apart from when having a shower ), Fan is always in extract / out. Condensation has never really been and issue in this van with running the fan on out makes all that differences. I do show the sort of data in the last series but it will be all logged on this trip as well. As for sore throat and chapped lips it’s never been a problem or noticed it but I’m used to working in every environment from deserts, mountains to jungles
