Awesome stuff. It still amazes me with what you can do on the floor. Shows that good quality and design don't need expensive tools and a nice shop.

Mold star is an expensive platinum silicone not specialized for concrete. If you are purchasing from smooth on have a look at their PMC or Vytaflex range which is abrasive resistance so will last longer (100 pulls from the posture mold as opposed to 20 odd from silicone Mold Star) and is specifically meant for casting concrete. Awesome products and are a little cheaper. Keep up the amazing content love yours and Jamie’s work! Truly inspiring.

Hey Ben, those turned out great! Also hi Jaime! Cool to see that y'all are growing a team :D excited to see what that means for the future. I liked the tip about the wax on rough surface, and the sanding timelapse was super satisfying with the clouds moving. What are you going to do with all those concrete planters?

I am sure someone has said this but I just wanna point out. That drainage holes are very important in all pots and especially small ones like what you've done here. Even more so since you are using plants that love to be dry between watering. Of course these planters can and will work but you've increased the difficulty of maintaining the plants by not having drainage built in.

yes but for succulents i have found that i don't need them as long as i don't over water.

I would suggest keeping the wooden forms from the original mold making process to place the mold back into when filling. This is particularly good for the larger molds and stop the flexing issue as you learned.

Hey great video. I never thought about using wax for areas like that. But just to throw an idea out there: silicon mold material is great, and totally necessary for super smooth surfaces but like you said it's pricey. One thing I figured out is that you can brush on your silicone to your positive and than back it with plaster. The plaster won't bend like the silicon keeping your cast straight, not to mention it's considerably cheaper than silicon. Also Smooth-On makes a great super dense mold material called vita-flex which can withstand the weight of concrete!
@eliwinkelman8122
@eliwinkelman8122 6 жыл бұрын
Then how do you get the cast out of the mold? Do you break the plaster?

Awesome! I am going to crete some of these this weekend. I am planning on creteing my molds with MDF on a CNC machine... I think I will use your melted wax tip so the liquid doesn't ruin the mold/stick. We will see how this goes... and yes I know how to spell create.

What if you put a single layer of smooth/rounded 1/2" river rock in the bottom of those molds before pouring in the concrete? Might make a cool feature on the top of the final product.

2 things, planters need some holes for draining extra water. And when you say 2x6 are you talking about inches? Besides that, excelent video, thumbs up

You really should use some oily release agents to extend the life of your mould. If using you could do more than 200-300 pourings :) Greetings from Berlin!

Loving the form of those planters. Hey, did you have a "coat" of something like "grease" in the pieces after they cured? I did a couple of concrete pieces and have this coat of something on them, I had to clean them with solvents because it wouldn't come off with water or soap :(
