ETA My sense of smell and taste might have returned eventually without me doing all this, but I'll tell you what I did. I am not saying it will work for everyone, but I hate not to mention it in case someone can benefit. I had no smell or taste. I started putting very pungent scented things close to my nose all day every day. I used a strong onion, garlic, lemon, orange, strong spices, unused coffee grounds, black pepper. I'd do this over and over regardless if I could smell them or not. I'd sniff them, not just hold them under my nose. Finally I started smelling them. It took a week or more , but it did work for me. For awhile I had a constant smell of smoke in my nose. I thought someTHING (not someone) was burning. I started first tasting sour, sweet, salty and spicy, but no distinct taste. I had an aversion to meat and most savory, but did like sweets. It finally improved to where I have my sense of smell and taste back. I surely hope this helps anyone who has lost their sense of taste and smell. I also took ibuprofen for any inflammation that might be going on. Mine may have been a different cause, but hopefully this will work for someone.

You are quite the storyteller, Dixie. When you described what things smelled like to you, I got a little queasy. When you shared what doctors were saying about everyone being crazy or anorexic, I got mad. When you all got better, I cried. When you spoke so kindly of David, I wanted to hug him. I'm so happy for you and your family.

My husband and I will be making the 1700-mile drive from Idaho next month to hopefully get the same success you got. 2 ½ years of little to no taste or smell with distortion. I am ready to sell my left arm to get my senses back. Thank you for this video. Fingers crossed for me🤞

@Lora Same here with the time/effect. I’ve been wrestling with self worth and the possibility of ending it; It has affected me that severely. It has literally taken my livelihood (chef) from me. I won’t give up though. I love living too much, even with losing a lot and all the bs happening with our elected officials & “health” experts. In the end, I belong to G-d & He alone; therefore I’ll be OK.

I didn’t know it had a name. Parosmia. I’ve had it for 13 months now. 0 smell, 0 taste. The worse is when my brain tries to “attach” a scent to XYZ and gets it wrong. Coffee smells like burnt mud water for example. On any given day, the whole day will smell like old mop water or fumes (car exhaust). I’ve been MRI’d and there’s nothing wrong in my brain 🧠. ENT specialist told me retrain my faceholes with aromatic oils. I can detect menthol because of the cold tingle, and yet isopropyl alcohol doesn’t even register.🤷🏻‍♂️ This video gave me hope! Thank you.🙏🏼

My wife and I lost our smell and taste from Covid in November 2021 and it was one of the most depressing things I have ever dealt with. It takes your joy away. I recovered mine after 2 months, but my wife still has a lot of blank spots. I am mostly normal, but I find that if I smell something bad my brain won't forget it and will make anything off smell like that for days. It's weird. I'm glad there's hope for a fix, it sucks so bad and people that haven't dealt with it do not understand. It really seems to be an early covid thing and doesn't happen as much anymore (thankfully).

I've been going through this for close to 2 years as well. What you're saying about difficulty managing weight is definitely true. I gained close to 50 lbs after losing my taste just due to the effect that not being able to taste had on my mental process. It made me wake up every day hoping I could taste something again. I tried to eat different foods and taste different things with absolutely no change in taste or smell. This is one of the most frustrating things I've ever experienced but it's been good in the end. I've definitely grown from it. I've been dieting the last 4 months and I'm down 44 lbs and feeling much better about myself. I was able to clean my sinuses with a navage and regain some of my taste and a little bit of my smell but I still lack most subtle tastes and smells. I've learned to live with it for now but I thank you for posting this because I may go this route some day. Thank you so much!

i had the worst flu of my life over Christmas of 2019 (2-3 months before the first documented cases of C*v!d hit the States.) I lost sense of taste and smell for at least 6 months. It was bizarre, and the senses came back very very slowly. Super weird feeling.

Quite a story, wow! Haven't heard of your channel, but algorithm pushed this today, and the outstanding thumbnail caught my eye lol. I had no idea parosmia could be so bad that people are dropping this much weight. Tragic. I always feel so sad and frustrated when I hear stories of women not being taken seriously by medical professionals. Glad you found a method that works, and congrats on getting your smell back! That virus is no joke, the way it causes actual brain damage... Thanks for sharing your story. Fascinating

11/21 Covid, I lost mine and it sucked worse than the bodyaches and chills. 3 weeks later both came back. First the smell then taste. Never had weird smells. Every day I would open up smelly things like coffee cans, peanut butter bread, (warning..my poo) etc and tried in my mind to smell or think about the smell. The loss of taste resulted in me not able to eat sardines or slimy foods. It grossed me out without the taste. I like to think that trying to smell helped me regain the smell. The first taste that came back was a sweet chocolate. I was like YEAH! I m a guy and have heard and know girls who have had lost their smell taste for long time like y’all.

I had a tree fall on my head a year ago, and I lost my sense of taste and smell. Lost a lot of weight too. A year later I can tell when something is salty, sweet or bitter. Coffee tastes disgusting as does chocolate and all sweets. However, things are improving because I don’t dislike eggs, steak, savory foods. And lately I can sense garlic, so savory foods are appealing now, whereas before I had no appetite at all. I’m wondering if there is a link between the COVID and my concussion that affected those senses. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing this and I’m so glad you and the family are doing better!

I'm on week 8 of no taste or smell. I've tried the burnt orange/sugar trick and it didn't work. I'm smelling essential oils daily, and pretty much everything that has a strong smell, some I can detect and others I can't. Not being able to taste is most frustrating for me. I will give it six months and if it's not back, I'm calling David. Thank you for doing this video, it has given me hope.

Please make sure to eat or you will die. That's not healthy to lose that much weight so fast. My mom's hair is falling out, and her kidneys are a little bit damaged from the muscle wasting. I miss smelling petrichor, and waking up in the woods to the scent of damp evergreen needles. I miss smelling my late grandma's perfume and being brought back to hugging her. I didn't have it nearly as badly as you guys did and I did return to normal eventually, but I could see how terrible this would be for all four of you. I’m so happy for you. In January 2020 I got covid. Lost my sense of taste and smell completely. It was psychologically devastating because I rely on my sense of taste so much. I can taste any meal snd tell you all the ingredients so I can make it myself. Eating is so enjoyable because I can taste every ingredient. It makes me hate junk food. How wonderful your family found this solution. I went to my acupuncturist who helped me so much. And he had no idea why I lost it. He just threw everything at it. Later I found out it was a symptom of covid. Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes the most random thing can be the solution. I’m glad you didn’t give up. People think losing sense of sight and hearing and touch is devastating. But smell and taste are a huge part of our lives. It can be super debilitating. I’m glad you didn’t give up. Thanks for posting

I've had parosmia from Covid, too. Describing it as changing familiar smells to a chemical smell really resoneates with me. Studies have shown that Covid actually causes a small amount of brain damage which is what causes a loss of smell. Luckily for me, I've had allergies to all sorts of things since I was in high school, so I'm used to not being able to smell much of anything, and eating anyway.

Thanks for a very informative video. I have had anosmia for about 15 years, which was not associated with Covid. When I first got it, I did experience the foul smell for a few days, and then I could smell nothing. I did have sinus surgery 5 or 6 years ago, and did have some instances where I could briefly smell things, but it is rare; and, as you pointed out, you actually forget smells. Although I have no bad experiences, my sense of taste is only what my tongue senses, so about 80% of food's taste is gone for me; and I am left only with sweet, sour, bitter, etc. I am happy to hear you and your family have been able to overcome your problem.

You mentioned that some people made comments about the CRNA was “just a nurse and not a doctor “, and other negative comments. Well I actually took the time to look him up, and he is extremely well educated and qualified. And even did a pain management fellowship after his masters degree that isn’t required. And because he is a CRNA, he has to have a MD, in the pain management practice. He’s responsible for his patients and so is the doctor.
