What, everyone has always said Brass screw was for the hot and silver for white. I looked it up and the internet seems to concur. Might consider looking into this and correcting. I always remember because lighter wire, lighter screw, darker wire, darker screw.

RYAN, YOUR ARE CORRECT. FREEZE THE VIDEO AT 1:29:17 MARK, YOU CAN SEE THE BLACK/HOT WIRE IS CONNECTED TO THE SIDE OF THE DEVICE WITH THE LONGER NEUTRAL SLOT. IN THIS SCENARIO, IF HE TOUCHES THE TOWEL BAR WHILE HE IS STANDING IN THE WET TUB HE WILL BLOW HIS ASS SKY FUCKING HIGH.

TIP: When you're messing with light fixture screws over the top of a bathroom sink, put the sink plug in before you start working to prevent any dropped screws from going down the drain.

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY I like your videos and they are very informative. Just a clarification, though, the black and white wires both carry the same amount of current in an alternating fashion (alternating current). The back of the GFCI tells you which color wire goes with which screw terminals. It is better to just read the device than try to memorize, unless you really do electrical all the time (then it becomes second nature). Also, the short slot is always hot, and the longer slot is always neutral. Also, it is very important to connect the GFCI properly as far as line and load is concerned. Thanks for the content and be careful!

For the lighting fixture, I've been taught to use 1/4" micro poly tubing (drip irrigation tubing) to brace against the light bracket. All you have to do is cut the tubing about 1/4" longer than you need, put the screw through it and tighten it down. The compression of the tubing makes the bracket stay stiffly in place. It's much easier and faster to prepare and use, and probably cheaper in the long run, than mutilating a wire nut.

I still prefer to wire the light switch to ground. Even though it gets grounded when you screw it into the metal box, but as soon as you unscrew it from the outlet box, and many people need to sometimes investigate a light switch with power on, it loses it's ground benefit when unscrewed and pulled out of the outlet box. Also, what if someone uses a plastic outlet box, and forgets that screwing the outlet into the plastic box doesn't ground the outlet? Now we have a severe electrical risk on our hands. This is why I always ground everything with a pigtail no matter what. For metal boxes, it's backup redundancy, for plastic boxes, it is required. Only takes an extra minute or 2 and I sleep much easier at night.

A little trick I use to remove pencil from fresh paint are baby wipes. They remove the pencil marks and not the paint. Works great for finger prints too. Great video. Noticed you wired the GFI incorrectly, Brass is hot, silver is neutral. Neutral/white wire is always on the same side as the ground wire.

Electrician here. It would make life a lot easier on you if you use plastic boxes instead of metal. Unless Canada code says you have to use metal for some reason. Also with the stab ins on the switches and plugs is totally fine to use, it makes a good connection, I have never heard of a problem with stab ins for 25 years. KISS, (keep it simple silly).

Hi Jeff. Hope you still read these comments because I have 2 project requests. Currently learning a TON from you. But now I'm moving on to attic renovations and finding that the internet and KZbin are giving me questionable and conflicting info for attic projects. It is at these times when I typically turn to your videos for the final word, but attic renovation is one area that doesn't have much coverage in your collection. Specifically, i'd like to request videos on: 1) How to build a dormer & 2) How to install a skylight in an attic with a sloped ceiling. My sense is that these videos would greatly benefit your more intrepid DIYers and would be great fun for all your fans to watch, regardless of skill level.

I loved your drywall patch tip, using the face paper to mask the hole. I trusted a “friend” to mount some ceiling lights and instead of using the obvious spring mounts, he used perforated strapping to mount to a joist thusly all the fixtures are out of round and none of the faceplates fit. Now I can cut them out and it wont look so bad. Thanks.

Talk about making assumptions, but then every screw has threads, right?? Well, no, not always. I remember back about 44 years ago. I was learning to be a mechanic. My boss figured that I was ready to do a tuneup. It was on a Lincoln with a 390 engine. Space to work was nearly nonexistent. He was on the driver's side installing spark plugs, I was on the passenger side installing spark plugs. Space was so limited that we were both just working by feel with our fingertips. So I start trying to thread the plug into the head. And tried and tried. And the longer it took me the more impatient my boss got. Finally, he came over to the passenger side took the plug from me and was going to show me how easy it was. After a few seconds, he got this puzzled look on his face as he tried to get the threads to catch. He finally gave up and brought the plug out into the light. Everything was there, with the exception of the threads! So, not every screw has threads, it always pays to check. I thought you might enjoy this.

Hi Jeff. I too hate Philips. Here in the States, they are all too plentiful and the square drives not so. A friend of mine told me that the Philips screws were designed as an answer to auto assembly workers stripping sheet metal screws and what not. They are designed to shear the drive off the screw before it strips the head or sheet metal. I think they work well for drywall but for bracing floors and alike they are less than adequate. I have looked for your square drive floor screws. No luck except for finish screws. I'll have my Sis in the Barrie area send me a few boxes. Thanks for your instruction!

You're putting on the Marette (in the states it's a "wire nut") to use as a spacer, and fighting it hard. "the other option is to get a stack of washers". When you got the extra long machine screws, you could have picked up matching nuts (just regular nuts) and threaded one to the right spot. If you want to lock them harder, you can use two, or they have locking nuts too. Way easier than washers or the Marette.

The only correct way to release the wire once you"ve adopted the push fit option is"nt to drag the cable out of the opening, at best you might leave a small piece connected live in its base. At the side of the cable push entrance there"s a slot which allows you to push a flat 4mm scewdriver bit into it, when it goes fully into the section it will allow full cable release.

In the case of the trailer we had in Minnesota, it passed inspection but was improperly wired... I basically had to go through and rewire 90% of the house so we had usable electricity. 1 20 amp breaker for example ran 3 bedrooms, the living room, the bathroom and the kitchen plus every light in the house regardless of room. Multiple outlets were begining to melt. If I had known any better at the time I would have let it burn down, house was a mess.

Also the mounting nuts that hold the housing to the wall will bottom out when put on the bolt, so if you have enough bolt showing (maybe more than enough) you could just bottom out the nut and continue turning until it snugs against the housing? the bolt will start turning pulling the nut down to the housing?

When you installed the towel bar you said that it would be on all the time so that you didn't need to turn it on and wait to warm the towels, however when you connected the switches you connect both the towel bar & fan to the switch on the right side of the electrical box? This would mean that the towel bar would be powered only when the fan is running? Was this a design change? Why didn't you connect the black wire taking power to the towel bar directly to the black wire for power in coming from the upper left inside the electrical box?

Follow up question - does it have to be tiled or could it be finished smooth somehow and painted like regular drywall? I see the lines/tile guides - are those grooves (and would thus be a visible texture if simply painted?) or is the surface smooth?

I used it in a shower video not long ago. The install is quite easy. Cheers!

I live in CA. We can do permitted electrical work as homeowners here. City regulations might prohibit it, but that's true in any state. Not sure what your smoking.

After watching some of your videos, Im dreading to open up my wall and bring every to standard codes so it can function properly. Never understood why some DIY cut corners, don't do their homework and lazy when building. Eventually. they willl end up tearing everything apart and redo it. It will create bigger problems for them later on. Why? Anyways, Thanks you for teaching and showing me how to. My house is a work in progress from the ground up. I am itching to statrt a project.

In case you didn't read the other comments. Whatever you do don't go switch all your white wires to the brass screws and all your black wires to silver screws. He made a mistake on that. Black on brass will save your ass.

The way you described line and load, all I could think is how L-IN-E literally spells it out for you.

"Strippers are a part of every electrician's life" lol Also, question on the order of operations. Was the order as following: Get permit, wire-up fixtures, inspection, call electrician to wire up panel?

In a bathroom over the mirror, the light must point down. To light a room instead of your face, then point it up.

I say lights down. If it's to Brite then change the bulb. But you get less shadows and better light. In my opinion.
