Hi Jeff. I appreciate your practical advice. A couple of comments/suggestions on this video to make the shelves look a little better (and provide some more support). Suggest leaving the cut edge facing out so that the "green and groove" don't show. Also suggest attaching the 2 X 3 directly to the bottom of the aspenite first, then cutting the support scabs the exact length from the bottom of the 2 X 3 to the floor and to the lower shelf. This would look better and add some additional support. Full-length scabs below the 2 X 3 at the wall would also add some support. Keep up the good work! I've learned a lot from your videos!

Saw this video a few months ago and knew we had to do it in our basement. We built 3 shelves in our basement. I had extra 2x4 from finishing the basement, so I just popped over to Home Depot for the 5/8" OSB. Even had them go ahead and cut both sheets in half for me! Lumber has gone up in price, but 2 sheets was $60 for a full wall of shelves. "cheap" plastic shelves are $50-70 and you'd need 4+ for the same amount of storage.

@jasonbell51526 ай бұрын
Wasn't a perfect freehand straight cut, but close enough. The circular guide and saw blade follow a pencil line. Doesn't need to be micron perfect, not building a dining room table. Home RenoVision is experienced. The offcut sides butt against the studs out of sight. The saw cut can slightly wobble to permissible limitation of the available 1.5" fastener surface. Veering off track just makes it look Homer but still structurally strong. The video says the first shelf will be 30" above the floor. If he marked the tape at 30", by installing the horizontal 2x3 bottom on the line plus the 7/16th" OSB breadth, that's 2-15/16" above 30". And I don't know where the "25"" came from except a minor miscue in making the video. This is a great shelf at minimal material cost. I would extend the 1x4 mounting blocks to the floor to get full load bearing with the screws as secondary support.

REVERSE DRILLING SYSTEM: In case others don't know what Jeff meant by his 'reverse drilling system' (I didn't, I had to look it up), when drilling through strapping to make sure it doesn't split you drill in backwards until the screw is through the first piece and then drill forwards for the last bit. At least that's what I think is going on. You'll notice that each time he drills through the strapping he drills a bit, stops and then finishes. At the stopping point he is switching from reverse to forward. I'm guessing he demo'd this in some other video that I haven't watched yet.

Me and the beau built these shelves today. We used 2x4s and 1x3s and connected with 1 5/8" construction screws for the thinner spots and 3" deck screws to connect the 2x4s to the sistered 1x3s. The 3" screws are too long for those spots, so I suggest using 2 or 2 1/2" long screws at those spots. 1 5/8" are good lengths to tie down the OSB to the 2x3 (or 2x4 if you want). We built a 5' long shelf and will use the 3' off-cut OSB to build a 3x2 shelf. We bought four 1x3x8, two 2x4x10 (had these cut in half) and one 4x8 T&G OSB and a small jar of 2" all purpose construction screws. Total cost $160 here in Stockton, CA.

I built two of these joined together. I used all 2x3s because they were cheaper than 1x3. One critique/ suggestion. I eventually had to run the front 2x3 that Jeff screwed to the osb, full length at 8ft so that the supports on the legs supported this front horizontal. This allows the leg to support the sagging weight of the shelf instead of relying on screws through the osb to hold the horizontal and the weight. (The screws tear through, ask me how I know) other than that great video and great cheap and easy project. 👍

After doing a bit of discovery with the stud finder, I had a general idea of what I needed, so I got my materials. Marked my holes, put in the first screw....only to find no stud! Tried a couple other spots, no luck. It turns out that my stud finder sees a stud, but there doesn't seem to actually be anything there. So, attempt number 2 will be this way!

Back in early 2020 it was likely a lot less expensive.

@@VortechBand Yeah, and I let one of my metal shelves rust on the patio and also let some of my old plywood shelf material become weather damaged. Now I need to get off my butt and reclaim whatever I can because I need to provide some storage in my garage. That's the penalty for being lazy . . . We can be our own worst enemy.

Used this method to put utility shelving in a downstairs storage area. Very helpful; thanks! As of this writing (June, 2022), OSB is about $35-40, and 8' 2"x4" is about $5 (USD); so cost now is about $70-80 instead of $30. A few notes from my experience: Originally thought I'd use 3/4" OSB or plywood. Turns out a 4'x8' sheet of 3/4" material is hard for me to handle, so I used 5/8" thick OSB. Works fine for the amount of weight I'm putting on shelves. If you want to use 3/4" thick material, most places you'll get it (e.g. HD, Lowes, etc.) will cut the a 4'x8' sheet into 2'x8' sheets (easier to handle) for a nominal charge. Walls in my storage area are poured concrete so I had to use concrete screws. These work fine for the loads I'm considering; if you need stronger fasteners, consider concrete anchors. I put LED strip lights behind the front supports (5:40). Wired them into the circuit that controls overhead lights in room. Makes it easier to see what's on shelves.

I've got an insulated container and I don't want to penetrate the walls so I'll take the basis of this idea and add free standing shelves. The OSB sheets are about $19 in my area and I've got tons of random off-cuts from various projects. It feels very rewarding when I use off-cuts rather than buying new lumber and saves space on all those aforementioned off-cuts.
