After struggling with mixing thinset on bathroom number 1, almost burning out my drill, I invested in the Ridgid 7135 mixer last year and switched to using All-set most of the time. It have variable speed, soft start, has an effective auger on it, and gives dual handles to easily control.

Also what I learned if using their all set, when setting the ditra mix it as loose as possible (max water). Then when setting tile mix it as thick as possible (min water).

D*mn right! With the will to learn, the resources available on the internet, attention to detail, and a modicum of common sense, the regular Joe can take on all these projects. Will you do it as well as a pro the first time around? Probably not. But you can do well enough! And if you're worried, volunteer to help a friend on their home, learn some lessons, and then take on your own job. 🙂

15:00 I perform occupational exposure sampling for many substances, including silica and respirable dust, and yeah I 100% agree that you are definitely not hitting your exposure limit with a few of those mixes. After sampling some gravel pits where dust is mostly from traffic, way more of a hazard from a dusty road for sure.

Jeff I think you know exactly what you're doing but there's one important step I haven't seen you mention and that is making sure your sub-floor is screwed down properly. I use a 3inch screw making sure you hit the joists. A stagger of about 8 inches is good. and make sure there is no play anywhere before you do the Ditra.

As usual great video. Question: I'm thinking of re-tiling bathroom floors, we have concrete floor underneath so would you still use the Schluter Ditra Membrane on top of the concrete? Would the benefit simply be to prevent the concrete from sucking out the moisture of the tile thinset too fast or what? Thanks In Advance! So I watched the vid because of the title “Why…” This was not explained during your core workout! Renoing a 35y old bathroom. Floors uneven and not level. Subfloor requires fixing in some areas. Would this be a good product to use to put a 12x24 tile on this floor? Considering using self leveling cement over the floor. Cheers

After my 40 years of "Industry standards" and "best practices", I tend to laugh at any "current" version for either of them. How many iterations must we suffer regarding "the right way" to install tile...if all previous "right ways" are now the "wrong way"? How long before this too becomes "the wrong way"? So technically, ...in hindsight, ...until this, the correct answer was "You only install tile on concrete floors." Because every previous way to install on wood had been done away with. They never were correct. Or they still would be today.

I've read that the sub floor needs to be pressure treated exterior plywood. Did you use that? Also,was the sub floor sealed with a primer? I chose this product because it a was only a few dollars more than the treated 1/2" plywood sheet I would have used. That would have made the tiles a little higher than the adjacent hardwood. The lower profile with a floor leveller should maintain the height

What is the purpose of the membrane? Does is protect the floor from Water? Or is it to protect the tile from breaking?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 ай бұрын
it does 4 main things. waterproofing, ands structure to reduce deflection, and provides a uncoupling system to protect tile from cracking due to expansion and contraction that occurs on direct bonding installations, it also acts as a crack isolation system so when installed on concrete if the concrete cracks that crack will not translate into the tile as well.

It's only going to cost you $1000's in 10 years time. Unless you plan on selling soon and flicking the problem onto someone else. This bloke is your typical "won't see it from my house" kind of guy. Also knowing the US, you don't have to give warranty on anything, in Australia you have to give 7 years warranty on waterproof systems. Good luck with this crap.

But I have the tub at one end and the exit door at the other end. I don't have the shower area as an escape as you did when putting on the second strip. You mentioned that you don't like to stand on the Ditra while it is still curing (34:12). So if I do one strip then I can't get to the area where the other strip goes without being on top of the first strip. Should I wait overnight for the first strip to cure or go ahead and kneel/stand on the first strip while thinsetting and installing the second? Thanks.

@@rebrokersabrina You can use it on both. First time tiling, and my first time using ditra in the bathroom instead of cement board. Its so easy to cut and lay to fit. Yeah it might be more expensive then cement board, but hey, its WATERPROOF form the get-go, which is ideal for BR! Getting the thinset measurement right is probably the only challenge you will have.

Is a peel and stick Schluter Ditra reliable for a bath room floor?

I personally have Zero faith in a peel and stick uncoupling membrane. This product is too new on the market and has yet to be field tested for me to offer advice. don't be the guinea pig on this.

If the purpose of the uncoupler is to separate the tile from the subfloor then why would you want to glue the membrane to the floor with thinset? I can't find an answer to this. What would it hurt to roll it out and let it float. If it's to level the floor slightly, you will accomplish that with the thinset under tile.

That's a Ridiculous price for that All Set. That's like the price of two bags. It's around $40 At Lowes or Floor and Decor if you have one near you.

Question: if I use regular modified thinset to set the ditra to plywood, can I use the same modified thinset to fill in the top of the ditra squares. Then the next day use the All Set to lay the tile?
@stevenperry4941
@stevenperry4941 7 ай бұрын
Doesn’t sound like a good idea to me. IMHO the point is to fill the Ditra and bond the tile at the same time with the same thinset. His recommendation to use Schluter All Set is perfect as it works for adherence to the plywood and the tile to the Ditra!
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 7 ай бұрын
you cannot use modified thinset to fill the ditra. it will not bond. and your tile install will be weak and fail from deflection. Cheers! not worth buying a bag of modified since you use so little of it anyway for setting the membrane.

HELP I have removed the vinyl flooring in my current bathroom, which was only stapled by floor vent, and it's bare wood. It's a manufactured home and I'm working around existing sink bassinet and new walk in tub. Should I still cover exposed wood with this membrane process before tiling?

Hey Jeff. Off topic question for a new DIYer if you or someone else can help I'd appreciate it. Trying to build an IBC tote stand (4ft off ground) for water pressure to gravity feed my garden. Those totes are pretty heavy (2330 lbs full of water). I want to build this securely and properly without any chance of sheering screws or anything of that nature. Looking at building this with some 4 x 4's and some other materials as I have heard 4×4 posts can support at least 4,300 lbs. So having those as my foundation seems ideal. Though I don't know wtf I'm doing. Help?

So educational! I wish I had found this video before I tried laying tile in my guest bath. I watched dozens of other tile videos but they were no where near as helpful. I could never get the Ditra flat and the coverage was awful. I had to pull it up and start over. Now I know what I did wrong and how to do it right. Thanks, Jeff!

Strange question. I’m looking at this product to raise the height of the tile to the height of my hardwood flooring that I am putting in the kitchen. I know this is expensive, but would it do the trick or is there something else? I’m installing over a cement foundation. I am great a DIY stuff, but not an expert at tile enough to add the extra height. Even with this 3mm added height, I still have to build us slightly.

Great help this video was! My local hardware store carries many schluter products except the trowels. I used a 1/4”x3/16” v-notch and looking under neath if I wasn’t getting 100% coverage I was getting pretty close to it.

If your plywood floor is fully screwed and rigid, what is the mode of tile failure this backing is protecting against? I can see it being sensible, I'm just not clear on exactly why.
