Please give us a updated video on your thoughts on the Oh Freedom Curriculum!!! There is like zero videos out there on this curriculum. I am trying to choose between it and River of Voices or even the new Torchlight for 4th grade.

Love these pick so much. We are Christian homeschoolers but it’s hard to find Christian, not white washed curriculum for us. Thank you so much for sharing. I’m very interested in the history and math curriculum.

Hey thanks for your comment! The history curriculum we’re using, Oh Freedom, has both a religious and a secular version so you should definitely check that out! 😀

I'm sad my girls are too young for the history program, but I'm keeping it in my back pocket for a few years. Charlotte Mason said that history is the experiences of people, not dry facts. Its nice to see another mom that cares.

Couldn't agree with you more. Its so refreshing to have excellent curriculum recommendations (not only recommendations but reviews as well) from a secular POV.

Hey Christina, I'm so glad you found our channel! Yes, resources for secular homeschool families are still much more limited than those available for religious (mainly, Christian) families. We have to dig a little harder but there are definitely some gems out there. In a future video I plan to share some of my favorite homeschooling KZbinrs - both secular and religious. I've learned a ton from religious homeschooling channels too, even if our beliefs/lifestyles are pretty different. So I'll definitely share my faves soon!

Is Brave Writer a writing curriculum or a language arts curriculum? I thought it was writing only.

I’m considering homeschooling in NYC as well. I do have a question concerning the cost which is not something I ever thought about. Can middle class people afford to homeschool ..? It feels like all these products could easily add up and become very expensive. Thank you, I’m finding these videos very helpful and refreshing to see a multiracial , non-religious family taking this on.

Hey Kira! So sorry - I thought I had replied to this comment the first day you posted! This is SUCH a great question and it's giving me an idea for a new video to address this. But the short answer is: absolutely you can do this on a very small budget. You don't need a whole separate homeschool room (see my latest video for a tour of our setup - we basically just have a couple shelves in our dining room). And you don't even need curriculum! Many families organize their whole homeschool around unit studies (I have a video about that too) and of course, many families go the unschooling route. You can get a TON of schooling done with just "free" books from the library!

We're working class and make it work. Please PLEASE do not be discouraged by the people with their expensive all-in-one curricula and their massive homeschool rooms. It can be cheaper than public school, where you have to buy paper towels and whiteboard markers for the teachers, "school shirts" for field trips and so on, would be. In general, though, the less money you want to spend or can spend, the more time you are going to spend on planning/prep and gathering resources. I personally look up what they "should be" learning for that grade and then find as many library/second hand books, free online resources, experiment and hands-on activity idea and printables as I can, then usually add some cheap supplement type workbooks. There are also free curricula like Under The Home that you can use as is or pull from. Most popular books and series, like Magic Tree House or Harry Potter for example, have free lessons plans and study guides you can work with. Math is usually where most of the money goes, because I am not good at it and it is not as easily incorporated. We spend very very little money on homeschooling and the vast majority of what we do buy, we'd also buy if they were in school. We also don't have a homeschool room and I don't feel like you need one. The way I see it, learning is a part of life and you don't need to go into a specific room to learn.

This was the first year for Dart, so the books were kinda flat, IMO. Completely agree on your assessment. The Arrow & Boomerang books (for older kids) have been much more compelling over the past few years. I’m really looking forward to the new Dart books, which will be announced in June this year.
