I really wanted to love Lighting Lit, but it just seemed so dry to us (we started with Grade 7). I love that it is an all in one LA curriculum. That is actually pretty difficult to find! But it just didn't engage my daughter. While I do think the classics are important, I wish they would also include a few more current pieces of literature to help engage the student more. Thanks for sharing this peak inside the upper levels.

I’m thinking a full year of Shakespeare is a lot. Another option would be to do 1 play or sonnet a year. Then do other things for the rest of the year. The best thing about homeschool is the flexibility of changing things up.

This is where I encouraged my kids to join local YA book clubs. It was amazing watching my kids light up when they shared their favorite passages with kids their own age. I think that's where the cement hardened, and they become committed life-long readers. The result? I was no longer the task-master forcing them to read. Optional: let them start a KZbin channel, where they review just-released YA novels. Let them discover that they can make money with some of their quiet joys.

Thinking about trying LL for my 2nd grader next year. Is it a complete curriculum (grammar, sentence structure, parts of speech, etc)?

I think it is. I’ve heard some say that it doesn’t cover grammar thoroughly enough, but I disagree. Personal preference I guess 😊
