I am a publc school teacher (fourth grade) and I was skeptical of the quality of homeschool curriculum and program rigor. Then last year I had a student who had been homeschooled join my class. I do not know the curriculum her mom used at home, but I was honestly blown away by the phenomenal education and background experience this young lady had learned. She was truly one of the brightest students in my class! My other misconception about social awkwardness was also debunked. The student was engaged, happy, and made friends easily. She was elected to student council after about a month of school. During parent-teacher conference, I could not praise her mother enough for the unbelievable education she provided her daughter. Homeschool moms and dads totally rock!

The Magnificent Montroys I know this is an old comment and you may never see this but I just wanted to thank you for this comment. I am not a mother of homeshoolers, in fact my kids are grown. I have absolutely no idea why I watch these kinds of vidoes because I did not homeschool my kids and they are grown now but I find it absolutely fascinating. I never had the patience to homeschool my kids but I always thought I would...I give teachers, whether homeschool, private or public schools so much credit as their jobs, your job, is very difficult. I am sure it's rewarding in a lot of ways but I don't think teachers get enough credit for all they do...or enough compensation!! But for some reason, the topic of homeschooling elicits such debate, both for and against, and I'm not sure why people can't just support a parents rights to choose...anyway, I'm getting off topic...I think it's phenomenal that you left a comment saying you were once skeptical and why your mind was changed. I love that you are supportive of a different way of educating than you are familiar with and realize that there are more ways to accomplish the same things. I think, as with teachers in schools, there are good homeschool teachers/programs and some that may not be quite as thorough but you will find that in public/private schools as well. Not all teachers/programs are created equally but that's the beauty of education...you may have different programs but you get out what you put into it which creates people of all different levels of education, interests and abilities which is essentially what makes this world the diverse, wonderful place it is. Thank you for being respectful...it's sad how so many people post comments that are very judgemental without being constructive or respectful. Everyone has different beliefs or points of view but you can express them respectfully...which is what you did so thank you :)

The Family Fudge I taught middle school math at an awesome school district in Texas for 5 years. We are going to homeschool starting next year when our oldest is 4. This choice lines up with our Christian beliefs better than public school. I'm not saying anything negative about public school, this is just the path we are led to do. I believe we can be more focused as a family on what our goals really are. We are going to use a Christian school where the kids will attend 2 days and homeschool the other three. Love your channel!

We chose to home school just recently for so many reasons. I feel i can provide a better education for my children than public schools here, also I want them to be happy and they really weren't happy at school. Plus I don't want to miss out on the short amount of time we have with them until they grow up.

We started homeschooling 19 years ago because I did home daycare and always did educational activities with the children. My oldest was 4 at the time and she had learned how to read with just a little help from me and I knew that she would be bored in preschool or kindergarten. We had a friend who was homeschooling and she encouraged me to give it a try. We loved it! All these years later, we have 3 who have graduated - one has a college degree & a career in finance that she loves, one is in a non-traditional college setting following his passion for music, and one who is a United States Marine. And, I am blessed to still have 2 at home with me- an 11th grader and a 7th grader. We love the freedom this has given us, as well as the opportunities to focus on special gifts and interests (like music & outdoor interests) and my children are very close. They spend hard-earned money to visit each other across the country & are each other's greatest support, along with mom and dad. I know homeschooling is not best for every family but it has been an incredible blessing to ours. Love your videos, Jennifer! I'm a little further along in the seasons of life, but I remember the years when the children were young and the things you share are wonderful! I appreciate recipes and family life stuff the most- you have a beautiful family & I love how you enjoy being together. God bless you!

I started homeschooling in 1988 and my last child finished homeschool high school in 2015, so I am a retired homeschool mom, now. I started when my oldest was in 2nd grade in public school. She could read very well when she was at home with me. She and I read The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe together, with her reading for a while and then with me reading it to her for a few sentences when she was in a little church kindergarten we had her in when she was only about 5 years old. I just explained difficult vocabulary and helped her when she needed with the words, but she could sound out anything. But in 2nd grade, her teacher was telling us that she couldn't read or do math and she needed to go to remedial classes. I did everything I could to help her while working with the school, but it just didn't work out. I had a few friends who were homeschooling and my husband and I investigated what they were doing and decided to pull her out of public school. Then we discovered as each subsequent child (6 of them) came along and reached school age that they were all dyslexic to differing degrees. So at some point, we just decided that we were a homeschooling family and we decided to stop trying to get to a point with each one that we could perhaps put them in public school. Anyway, I enjoyed the freedom that homeschooling gave us with regard to curriculum and other things. A lot of my focus was religious based. We are LDS and didn't really have the option of a religious private school. We are natives of Georgia and lived there and in South Carolina and therefore that option just wasn't available to us. Love to you and your sweet family from a homeschooling pioneer! BTW, when I started homeschooling, there were very few curriculum options. I love all the choices that you and my daughters who homeschool have for the children now.

We did that bookshark world history curriculum last year! We decided to homeschool primarily because of my husband's work schedule. He has always worked more of a night shift and so we decided that it would be the best way to stay connected. Also, at the time we were living in rural Hawaii and didn't want to make the trek to a local school. Now that we are on the mainland, homeschooling has made moving an easier transition. Also, I want to raise kind, compassionate, respectful kids. :)

We are on our 3rd year of homeschooling. We started mainly because my son has Autism/ADHD. But there were also other factors as well. And because we have homeschooled successfully each year I keep going. It's not easy but, it's very rewarding.

Your homeschool room is awesome! We also use Confessions of a Homeschooler for our days of the week, weather, and calendar time. I loved what Erica came up with. We're also big fans of We Choose Virtues. My boys have learned all of the virtues, though now we really have to continuously put them to practice. As for what made us choose homeschooling, my husband and I had plans to homeschool from before we got married. I knew homeschoolers and they just seemed so mature and I loved the idea of having our own schedule. My oldest son had speech and developmental delays so we put him in a preschool program through the county. I was really upset and thought that my homeschool dreams were definitely over for at least until 2nd or 3rd grade. We reluctantly put him in kindergarten and for 2 weeks he was miserable. At the end of the second week, he told me that he didn't want to leave me and he wanted to stay at home. So, we pulled him out of school and have been homeschooling him ever since. This is our 4th year homeschooling. It took him longer to have the attention span to really get down and do his work, but he's doing very well now and my second son is also thriving. Our youngest, though she is also in the preschool program through the county, will be coming home for homeschooling after preschool. It just works for our family and I feel so blessed to be able to do it.

We began homeschooling when our oldest was in 5th grade for a variety of reasons. Both of girls have now graduated and one is a RN-BSN and the other a sophomore at university. We "co-schooled" also so both girls took elective classes at public high school. We belonged to a homeschool group for co-op classes. Best of both worlds, lots of public school kids came with our girls to homeschool events, and the girls were able to participate in all public school events too.

We have homeschooled our 4 kids (have graduated 2 now, with 2 still home) for many reasons. The school district we live in is not the greatest, and it has just worked for us. It has been a great experience with ups and downs, but I would do it all over again if given the choice. It has also been a great alternative for our special needs child, too. I think there are many ways a child can learn, and a family can teach, in the home or out. This is one of the ways that has worked for us. :)

Homeschooling is the absolute best thing you can do for your kids. I homeschooled my two kids for three years (many years ago) and used the Abeka curriculum, which is Christian/Biblical based. Our kids attended a Christian school prior to that and was already familiar with that curriculum. The reason we decided to home school them was because they were both competitive gymnast, which required us to travel a lot for competitions and it was very convenient for our family. They were definitely the best years, as it brought us even closer as a family. They eventually wanted to go back to their school full-time and compete and travel less and so they did. I'll definitely always cherish those years I taught them. Some of the brightest kids are homeschoolers and many of them go on to Ivy League universities. I absolutely love your homeschool room! Your kids are blessed!

Now I get to enjoy all the little moments with him and it just feels right having him with us now. :) I love your videos! And I love your enthusiasm!

Loved the video. Gave me some good ideas on how to organize. This is our 2nd year homeschooling. We started because we had issues with school transportation and mine and my husband's work schedule. Then we also had issues with teachers expecting certain things from the kids but she would not enforce it in her class but would send letters home saying your child needs to do this or that better. My son actually asked me today if he could go back to public school, its was a rough year last year and I have a feeling it may be a rough year again. He misses art and music and I have mastered getting it worked into our homeschool schedule. Again, I really like the video, it gave me some good ideas!!

We started homeschooling for 1st grade because in Kindergarten my daughter was fooling the teacher with what she knew and didn't know. So we decided to see exactly where she was with everything. Well she was struggling with reading. We homeschool through an online school. Well in second grade we put her back in brick and mortar school around Thanksgiving due to a few things going on. But every problem we fixed with her by then. Shortly after the start of 3rd grade she started being bullied. The school decided to act like there was no issue so we pulled her out and into a different online school and haven't looked back. We discovered why she was struggling with math, she can't do that common core crude. So she is learning math the old fashioned way.

It can be either Bible based or secular and it goes over the 12 virtues or Diligence, Perseverance, Patience, Honesty, Gentleness, Kindness, Obedience, Helpfulness, Attentiveness, Self Control, Contentment, and Forgiveness. Each virtue has child associated with it and a saying about the virtue. Like for example Perseverance is "I can do it, even when it's tough". We love it and use it to this day. We used it 2 years ago and now we still use it for the 3rd year. I'm going to be adding Bible to it this year. :)
