#swr SPELL TO WRITE AND READ is a pretty bland looking curriculum that one would probably not pick out at the bookstore, nor would they desire it at the homeschool convention, however, the results I have gotten from this curriculum, including circumventing two different learning disabilities and having phenomenal reading and spelling scores, has me convinced that these are the creme de la creme of homeschool curriculums. PLUS, the curriculum covers first through fifth grade, so you will not need to purchase additional materials for reading, spelling, grammar.

Pattern Play, yes! I swear by it for my own children’s brain development. I put that in front of them at 12 months. I used it for a decade teaching Preschoolers. Each child is different but the flow of cursive and visual picture with sound (Abeka curriculum driven) is my go-to ❤️

@@ceoofmyhome did you ever struggle with a headstrong child? She is really well behaved but we just started this year homeschooling 1st grade and sometimes it’s a struggle to get her to want to do it. I hope that makes sense! Today was a rough one and we both cried! I struggle with the thought if she goes back to public school; I’m scared she will be behind so I struggle with worry and may be trying to do too much curriculum! Sorry to ramble!! I’m just hoping and praying I’m doing enough and doing it correctly!

HiSamara: I love this program because you do the exact same steps every year. We used the same program 1-5th grade on all five of our children, and every year, we started the program over again. The only difference is where is the child in the word list? If they have never done the program, it's good to just start at the beginning for both grades the first year.

At 24:35 where are you getting the teacher’s table of contents? I’m not finding it but don’t know which book to look in. Do you have a video that walks through a typical day (ideally the first day) of a lesson? Does this replace any other language arts for the student until past 5th grade?

Have you ever looked at The Phonics Road to Writing and Reading? I was all set to go SWR until I saw The Phonics Road to Writing and Reading. My 7 years old is reading at a 3/4th grade reading level but he doesn’t know all of the phonograms and spelling words.
@ceoofmyhome
@ceoofmyhome 3 жыл бұрын
I have not, but this program is phonics based (we say phonogram), and your seven year old is not behind. If they learn how to pronounce/recognize the phonograms, and begin by just writing all of the letters in cursive...it will be no time before they are reading and spelling quite well. I hired a teacher and trained her to do this method. She taught my kids from grades 1-5 and even attended a seminar on dyslexia to make sure she was doing the best method. She always was affirmed in the seminars that she attended, that this (or just learning by phonograms without picture prompts), is indeed the best way for a child to learn to read

Ok, I’ve got my STWR curriculum coming in the mail! Yay! Question on the Cursive First program...Asher & Myra are 7 and have been writing traditional print for two + years now. Their handwriting isn’t great. Should I stop “writing” altogether and solely focus on Cursive for a year? I know you started your kids with it from the gate, so just trying to think what’s best since we’re already a few years in 🤷🏼‍♀️

Does the SWR program have language arts lessons too? Like homophones, contractions, etc? Is it a full language arts and english grammar curriculum? If not, how did you teach that? Is it the Mccall-Crabbs? Thank you...this is my missing part of my homeschooling plans.

In that case-I would still be using sandbox and lots of manipulative for writing-go outside and write with sidewalk chalk-write letters on each others back-practice phonograms on the trampoline-use beans or rice in a box and trace in the rice...you are taking the classroom and expanding it-so that there is the same “a” but not limiting it to just pencil and paper

@@catherineknight317 Hi! I think you can do it from the beginning. I only did it 15 minutes a day for that age child, working primarily on letter sounds (phonograms) and drawing letters in the sand-15 mins max...you won't get to the meat of the program until the child has mastered the basics

If you really wanted to agonize over ‘A’ you’d realize it makes FOUR sounds. When do the children learn the fourth? It’s called “raised short - a.” Not every accent incorporates it, but yours does! As emphasized at 7:04 and 8:47 surely you hear the difference between “and, can, man, Pam” and “cat, sat, tab, pad.” The former uses the raised short - a. It’s incredibly confusing for young readers. They SAY it’s a short vowel, yet ‘A’ followed by ‘N’ and ‘M’ makes an entirely different sound than the regular short - A. For that reason, I don’t “like” any phonics program. We always suffer the through the confusing A’s and hope it makes sense the more we do it. How is this program any different? Obviously this program expects kids to fill in the gaps just like any other. Why would “thee” be one of the first words a child learns when that pronunciation is only applicable if the word following begins with a vowel. Do you mean “the” as in “thuh”? Which is by far more common. I’d like to bring up the amount of children that grow up and get depressed because they put so much energy into being smarter than everyone that they snap once their peers catch up. How grotesque that their self worth came from feeling superior. Who cares if you could read “big books” in third grade? There are far more timeless skills to value.
@ceoofmyhome
@ceoofmyhome 8 ай бұрын
There is no agony to learning the third sound...only total freedom and the bottom line is, no confusion...the brain specialist and Romalda Spalding found the very simplest, black and white way to introduce "sound" to the brain. Consequently, if you attend a dyslexia conference in 2023, they have "now" discovered exactly what Miss Romalda "discovered" in 1929...there really is a "best way" to introduce "sound recognition" to the brain and it is especially helpful to dyslexics in the present day.
