Thanks so much for these man! I've been talking with people about this for years waiting for you to do something like this. It's not just about the playing, it's the experience, what you have learned after years of playing on thousands of tunes at the highest level, the totality of music as whole and how to play for the song and not for the glory. Its what every musician needs to hear. So much more than just guitar. Pure inspiration! Thanks again, speaking for myself and thousands of others I imagine, I hope you keep going with this these life lessons for guitar, they are really great!!

“Is it better with what I’m doing or is it better when I stop?” That should be tattooed on every musician’s right hand...also, as a songwriter, thanks for talking about the target emotion. I call it the true north.

I'm a piano player (everything you said is true!), and the best part for me was at 14:23, it was the most "piano" thing I heard exactly like I would do in my right hand...for quick/easy thinking in the key of G (like a G blues) it's really a walk down of the 5 (d) minor scale in sixths. In low note, high note format: D,Bb | C,A | Bb,G | A,F | G,E | F,D | E,C. You could also think of it as F major then C major, and you can see how it really highlights the flat 3 (Bb) and flat 7 (F) of G for that smooth bluesy vibe. It would be really cool to know how Uncle Larry thinks of it!

You’re so right man. Piano players have such a vast grasp of arrangement and harmony and color, that’s why they’re usually the musical director in a group or the leader on a session date. And yet they don’t have the palette of touch expression and individuality that a guitar player has with their vibrato, bends and articulation. I think we all picked the right instrument guys and gals! Btw I love organ lines, I used to listen to and plunder guys like Jimmy Smith liberally.

if you're struggling with the 4 chord at 14:14 - he's playing both the 6th and the 7th notes rather than just one or the other: from the 5th string to 1st string as follows - C, A, Bb, E. This is not unlike the sus lesson from his earlier vid.

Absolutely matches my experience in years of doing sessions. You're a service man, a psychologist and a therapist. A friend referred to my old Bob Bradshaw rack as a vending machine and he was right. You're there to interpret someone else's vision and you have to get inside their head. Nothing like doing music for a political ad campaign and having a musically clueless campaign manager and media consultant try to give you musical direction. Tom is truth telling here. I still have those old Session Man MySpace posts archived somewhere. Priceless!

Tricks and tools of the trade. Pleasing strangers; how a meter, tempo, harmony and timing/the relationship of chords, melodies and how they lay upon and inform the other- what emotion these artists are trying to hook you with. Do you have worry about overtaking the tune….or do some artists want you to hook them? I especially love a great song where the lyrics are a juxtaposition from what the music is conveying and it’s a master deception. “Pianists are the quarterbacks of music” quote of the day. This may have been your most insightful video. I love this.

Where have you been? I just discovered "homeskoolin'" from a link in a vid for an ad for a Silvertone guitar on Reverb. THIS is the kind of thing youtube is so good for...it's like sittin' with a big brother, hanging out and watching him play. PLUS, there's the 50% speed control and the ability to go back and go back and go back. I came in on last week's installment, but I'm back at no. 1 and I'm gonna work through them all...guitar in hand, of course. Thanks for the inspiration and the demonstration. Big UPS to you, Tom.

Bit late I know but have just discovered you and your channel, Tom. Don’t know whether you read these comments but anyway... I‘m a singer-songwriter and rock guitarist. I wanted to thank you for saying, from your great wealth of experience, that the playing should serve the feeling in the vocal. It’s often struck me, in the studio and onstage, how some musicians play to each other without really listening to the song. A bass player must lock in with a drummer, sure, but if they listen just to each other the song suffers. Similarly some great lead players always serve the verse sections of the song (Kossoff for instance) while others don’t remember to adjust their volume even. If you play and sing at the same time, as I do, it’s easier in a way because the vocal gets the feeling of the song running through you. So the bit of your video where you apologised for being a bit abstract seemed to me especially valuable. Thank you for your wisdom and superb playing.

So true about the piano players. I play with a couple of great guys who are firmly rooted in jazz: Their harmonic awareness is so on point. One of em also learned me how to listen to the natural places singers breathe so you can follow their flow when you're the only comping instrument. Learn from your piano friends!
