So nice to see not shying away from picking Christian curriculum and making it work for you. I find that many non-secular curriculum are very easy to work around to omit the religious content. There are so many great resources to discover when you are open to it.

Yes, I really think so! I think there’s also a big difference between literature based Christian curriculum versus say a textbook from a Christian perspective. My experience has been that with literature maybe some of the books are ones we wouldn’t use, versus a textbook that’s interspersed with a particular perspective. That’s why I SO appreciate being able to see samples of things! Thanks for your comment! 💗

Thank you so much. You presented a very thorough review! I’m wondering if you don’t get all of the books, can you still complete the course? I have a 7th grader and a 10th grader and want to do a literature based history that is appropriate for both boys. I’m only interested in a handful of the books.

I think you could absolutely do something with just some of the books! It wouldn’t be as comprehensive, BUT after having started I can tell you that the amount of discussion questions (and the depth of each lesson) is so extensive that you can absolutely get something meaningful out of it! I’ve been very happy so far with what is being asked of my student. And as an aside, she has started reading some of the later scheduled books because she can’t resist how interesting they look! 😂

Thanks for a look into this guide from BF. Since you mentioned replacing Kite Runner (and I 100% agree with replacing it), you may want to look through the notes for that book's lessons in the guide. I'm not familiar with it, but in looking at the parts you flipped through, it has discussion and thought provoking questions in the guide that might address some of the difficult topics the book covers. Might be worthwhile to see what's in the guide before your child does, to make sure you're comfortable with the content. Just thoughts... Thank you for the flip through and sharing your thoughts on it! 😊

Thanks for this video. It’s hard to find much on BF high school history. What do you think makes BF history stand out compared to other programs like notgrass or mystery of history?

I haven’t tried either of those two, so I wouldn’t know. What I really love is the depth of the discussion questions! I chose this because of the book list, so that’s another big positive. Very impressed so far!

@@ddchomeschool is there a main text the student has to read? Does your high schooler work independently with the program? Have you tried or compared with other living book programs like ambleside? Sorry for all the questions. We’ve never tried a program without a given text so wondering exactly how it works. I’m going to watch your video again to see if I missed anything.

Totally! So, there is no main text. It is very similar to AO in that there are all these literature selections. This student did AO last year and really enjoyed that format. The main difference is that I would say these books aren’t as old and are far more diverse than AO- however this is also modern history, so that’s par for the course. AO definitely has some modern books, depending on the level. This student does work independently. She uses the teacher guide for the individual assignments (e.g. read chapter 1), and then answers the discussion questions. If I remember, I’d love to film a follow up video where I share more about what that looks like. I think it would be very helpful to be able to “see!”
