Prices have gone up drastically in the last few years. I just received 3 quotes for a 2300 sq. ft. roof. It's a steeper roof (12/12). Lowest quote was 32K.

I have 28 squares. (SQ= 100 sq feet) Looked at Lowes and priced it out as 2,800 to 3200 for the material. If labor should be 40% of material cost I get a cost of 4200 dollars. 3000x1.40. Got quoted 20k. Called and lined up 18 more quotes and if I can't get a fair price will just wait until spring and buy the material and replace one square per day (3 packs at 26 shingles each) which will take 30 days plus 10 more days for the ridges and pipes. Might even just replace one package per day for 90 days and turn it ih to a hobby. Amazing how much work you can accomplish by puttering, especially when you are saving 15,000 dollars you do not have.

So what are you gonna do when it rains. I have 6 months experience. I could do it in 3 days byyself but 40% of 4200 is 1680. That's 550 a day. I would do it. But my boss never would for under 15k

They act as if their gods or something. It's not that hard to install shingles but it does matter how you lay them if you don't want it to leak. You can ruin your whole house if you do it wrong. U can save a lot of money if u do it right

It would at least make sense to hire skilled help. I'll do it for 350 a day plus flight/accomodations.

@@PeterGreco-zq7se Wait until the rain stops and then replace more. I only remove what I can replace in one hour. I finally just did it myself. Net cost was $4745 due to paying to have the old shingles hauled away, and having to replace 4 sheets of plywood. Took me 1-2 hours per day for 3 months. The flashing and plywood I did on a weekend as that took the longest. I stepped on a roof nail that cost me 1.75 in medical supplies. Felt great saving 15k plus i bet I did a better job. Two major and 5 minor storms and no leaks. I even did it to the new code.

Its pretty funny that people are ok with 20,000 dollars for a kitchen remodel but scream about a 20,000$ roof. The price of your roof depends on how much the contractor thinks its worth doing your roof. People dont understand that one mistep or slip can change a roofer and their families life forever. People are ok giving a budget for a bathroom or kitchen remodel but get suspicious if a roofer asks that question. Feel free to get the cheapest roof you can but dont be suprised or but hurt when it ruins your 20,000$ kitchen or bathroom remodel. Dont be mad when you opted to not replace your old flashings. Dont complain if you chose the cheapest roofing materials and they fail. Dont be upset when that cheap contractor isnt around if something goes wrong and your holding the bag.

My neighbor got his 26 square roof done for 6,600 and they did a phenomenal job and safely. He and I are both nearly broke due to property taxes and home appreciation and gentrification. We both work decent jobs over 50 to 60 hours per week just to make ends meet in this economy and see friends getting laid off all the time. I have health issues from working and won't be able to afford to retire probably ever. Social security is a joke and when a roofer comes and tries to price a roof that national average is 9,000 dollars at 20,000 please do not cry that you have a tough job. I did roofing in Mojave in the summer where we were drinking water all day and never had to use the bathroom. All we ask is a fair price for fair work and not to be scammed. Roofers have a horrible reputation for scamming and I've been on both ends. some of it is well deserved and some is not. What you say is true but not all of us can afford a 20k roof to protect or 700 dollar kitchens that are builder specials from 30 years ago.

That sounds good but you fail to mention that like me as a laborer I get paid nothing for doing the work while my boss sits in the truck and collects all the money. It's all bs . Everyone thinks their experience warrants them making 1k$ per hour. It's just shi77y

My mom just called some random guy to do a roof . Lucky i showed up before time and told him no. He was charging 13,800 for 975 sqft. Just shingles and underlay and im like hell now thats way too much.
