Here he is again folks.
A clip from a session we did today with Vince Gill at Vince’s studio in Nashville...
I thought you guys might learn a lot from seeing Gordon play some beautifully understated shit on an actual track in a large ensemble, instead of the usual effortless mind boggling feats of solo piano showbiz you guys are used to witnessing him do.
Dig the otherworldly touch…dig the ancient pocket.
This is once in a lifetime shit here friends.
There are literally only a few people left on this entire planet who can play LEGIT traditional old school country and western piano in it's purest form and successfully conjure the ghosts of Pigg Robbins and Floyd Cramer, and TWO of those people are on this very same session...Gordon and John Jarvis.
Believe me, we all clearly realize how spoiled we are....it's like having Jim Brown and Walter Payton in the same backfield....fun stuff kids

Listen to that comping. Every note is at an even volume. When he does the upper register fills Gordon naturally pops the notes out, but still even. The engineer doesn’t have to fiddle with the faders. I still remember Gordon’s amazing playing with Alabama on “Just a Closer Walk With Thee”. One of the best.

You can tell a pro session guy immediately even if you just hear the last chord. They know to let it ring until it completely dies naturally and don’t start talking, leaving it to the engineer to do the fade. God that Yamaha sounds good!

He is a national treasure ... and he does more than piano. I saw him this past weekend playing with the Gaither Homecoming crowd playing B3. At one point Bill cut him loose to play three verses worth of solo on that B3 ... I was floored. I've never heard anybody play B3 like this dude! I couldn't get enough of his B3 playing. For five hours, he was in the right place at the right time over and over again. Truly a treasure!

Gordon is spot on about that Bb at the break. As a piano tuner I can tell you that on some pianos the notes at the break are almost impossible to tune well. They just don’t sound right. The break on a piano is when you move from one bridge on the soundboard to another. It can be at different notes depending on the piano. Happens from the bass to tenor sections and also at the treble.
