I had the incredibly good fortune of meeting Uncle Larry in the parking lot of Gruhn's a few weeks back, and thanking him for two years of sharing his knowledge and wisdom. Y'all, he's just as kind and gracious in person as he appears here. Today's lesson is humbling and brutally honest. That question - "How old are you?" hits pretty close to home. Sometimes I think, you know, hey I'm a halfway decent player and a good singer, I should be putting myself out there. And then I'll see someone playing for tips at the BNA airport lounge at 7am on a Tuesday who completely blows me away and I remember that I'm gray, I'm over the hill, and I have a non-musical career that precludes being able to devote any time and effort into being a gigging musician. Nashville is a tough town to make it in as a professional musician, but that extremely high level of professionalism also makes it a tough place to find like-minded people if you're more of a weekend warrior, "lets hang out and play some tunes in lieu of a Saturday night bridge game" type of player.

Loved your Rant Uncle Larry. I was sitting at work waiting for the day to end and saw your new video and clicked on the description in hopes of finding something out about that cool axe you are playing but instead I stumble upon the best rant of all time. The quote “ social media will be the downfall of society “ could not be more true…and how KZbin gets a pas because it doesn’t just exist to feed the ego. Those are things I’ve been thinking for a long, long time as I’ve watched people change over the last 10 years so I’m glad my favorite living guitar player understands the appeal of the “ mystery “ of yesteryear and the stars of yesteryear. I wish we could split society into two groups of people. The kind of people like us and the new breed of ego maniac know it-alls. Preach on and Play on Uncle Larry…God Bless ya brotha.

@@tomcoryell thank you for compliment and comprehension of my own little rant. What Kim Kardashian chose to wear when she went out today should not be a news headline…ever…but unfortunately that’s where we are as a society. I remember on one car ride I played Sam Cooke, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Hendrix, Cream, Fleetwood Mac and Gary Moore for my girlfriends 16 year old son. He was silent for the whole ride, listening…and as I was thinking and hoping he would be amazed and impressed and show interest in learning more about the artists he just heard…when I stopped the music to hear his reaction, it was a simple, “ Why did that all sound so bad? “ and I unfortunately was not surprised since Tik Tok is his go to form of “ entertainment “ but still a huge let down as I couldn’t get enough of every piece of music I heard as a kid from my fathers record collection from the 1960’s and 1970’s and slowed down every recording and learned all my favorite songs on his old 1968 Guild acoustic which I still have 30 years later.

Thanks for your “attempt” at lifting the spirits of your fellow man. It was much more than an attempt-It was a huge success in my opinion, and from reading many of the comments from fellow homeskoolers, I believe many people would agree. You’re right about having to move to a music city. I’m from Iowa. (Puts head in hand). Good luck going anywhere in music here. Tried Minneapolis, and Denver. Nothing there either. Nashville is where I should’ve gone back in the 90’s in my prime. Now I’m too old for that, and too old for you to adopt me. Dang! That’s okay, Im totally fine getting inspired to play guitar and “write songs” after each video you post. Thanks again for starting this thing when we needed it most, and for keeping it going for the homeskoolin family. Can’t thank you enough

Uncle Larry, I appreciate the way you find the voice in whatever guitar you have in hand. I also think your mastery of the guitar doesn’t mean you “ know all things, all idioms, all modes,” etc. I think it means you know how to think musically into the parameters of music you contribute to live or in sessions and you are exceptional at those! Yeah playing what a song calls for instead of cramming in every “ nat note” or “ squirming to death on a blues riff” ( favorite Zappa characterizations ) is what you do so well. To me, a former Ohio born and raised picker, quite familiar with Cleveland and it’s limitations but appreciative of the diversity of music we could play and develop in, being musical and having something to say was the greatest pursuit. And I for one, think you are about as close to “ mastery” as a player can get! Of course, add nat notes or squirm when needed. Love your show, inspirational.
