Gruhn’s Video idea - vintage cool guitar vs off the shelf modern version. What would it take to even get close? Setup, mods, etc. Could be fun, could just be a dunk session, which would also be fun. You mentioned folks asking about setups and how you would have to put it in your hands - put it in your hands and give us some insights. Uncle Larry’s 58 vs an R8 might be interesting too just for the comparison. BTW, thanks for getting me to put it back in my hands after 20 years off. I suck, but it’s way more fun now than it was as a kid!

I just bought the most game changing guitar pedal thanks to Tom Buckovac… an XTS modded Boss GE-7 that moves just the most important mids around. OMG…. This pedal makes all guitar sit so well in the mix but in the amp….. I think this pedal makes the speaker more tunable and allows a better signal path to hear what a basic speaker hides in most amps. It clears up those “in between “ mids that guitars can lack due to pickups or wood or strings…. It draws out the very best like a soundboard preamp fine tuning….. You could dial this XTS in and make every guitar sound exactly like what you hear in your head…. Crazy feeling being able to dial a PRS SE by using this pedal and hear better mids with any amp to sound like a 2-3k PRS guitar…incredible pedal Tom and XTS has made!!! It is like having a great transparent compressor pedal that you never turn off because it makes everything alive and feel so good!!!

@501chorusecho As a professional mastering engineer, there’s several reasons for remastering - none of them reasons that contribute to the music, unfortunately 1.) louder, wider, brighter - audio’s benchmark keeps pushing loudness and brighter albums, so to keep older albums playable in the same playlists with the modern music, the labels opt to re-master 2.) Artist ownership - remastering an album allows the artist another opportunity to have mechanical royalties. Sometimes the original royalties are owned by the label (bad record deal) so by having a new remaster, they are now able to receive mechanical royalties since it’s a new physical master file. I get this one since a lot of artists got screwed back in the day and this allows them a chance to get some well-deserved monetary compensation for their songs - albeit at the cost of a changed sonics (this is why there was so many “extended version” albums in the 90s/00s and why there was so many remastered versions in that same era too 3.) archive/storage preservation. Due to lots of classic album’s masters being on storage mediums that are liable to wear and potential degradation, labels opt to transfer masters to a modern digital storage medium. The inevitable “louder, brighter, wider” is a byproduct of this.

@@501chorusecho I picked up somewhere (likely on KZbin) that the mastering for vinyl was sufficiently different from that needed for CDs, that older CDs got a "skewed" sonic profile, so rectifying that was part of the rationale for (some?) "re-mastering". That might be a load of old cobblers, but I reckon Tom knows enough pro recording/mix/mastering engineers that this claim might get a definitive evaluation. ;-)

@@501chorusecho I can give you my solemn oath that I, as a mastering engineer, promise to never mess with any classic original masters 🫡 And I should clarify, as a mastering engineer, preservation of original vibe, Sonics, and emotion, is our #1 goal - it’s just that label politics and other factors outside our control muck with that - to our frustration as well (after all - we’re fans of the originals as well)

12:00 "Let It Grow" from 461 Ocean Blvd : my story. I saw Clapton on that tour, at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. My dear brother (RIP) took me, and we had seats in Row J in a ~14,000 seat (for concerts) arena. I remember vividly a few moments of that night, none more clearly than the outro to "Let It Grow" - so powerful, that it felt like the music was physically washing over me. Potent moment. Thanks for jogging the memory, Tom!

I have to say Im impressed with the Home Skoolin crowd, when Uncle Larry brought up the Led Zeppelin question I thought for sure the entire comments section would be arguing about whether or not Page and Plant were the most horrible song pirates that ever existed, an argument which I as a huge LZ fan have waded into many times. Im glad Larry has the opinion he does on the matter, which I believe is the correct one. 80% of the lawsuits were on account of Plants lazy lyric writing/nicking, others were on account of homages that LZ did that artists took offence to and in some instances the lawsuits were on account of straight up mistakes. For example Babe Im Going To Leave You and Dazed and Confused were both thought by LZ members to be traditional songs, When The Levee Breaks is actually a traditional song etc. But the most contentious is Spirit's Taurus. Myself I believe that its a common descending minor passage and it has been used countless times going back to the Baroque period, and the similarities between Taurus and Stairway really end with that opening passage. Id invite anyone who thinks LZ "stole" that lick to check out Davy Graham - Cry Me A River which predates Taurus by almost 10 years and is practically exactly like the opening phrase of Stairway. You couldn't think Zep stole it from Spirit without thinking Spirit stole it from Graham after hearing it. Page was a huge fan of the Irish troubadours and its as likely he heard that version as Spirits Taurus. As a Zep superfan I feel the most egregious nicking was Pages note for note copy of Bert Jansch's arrangements from his album Jack Orion without any acknowledgment. Yes they are traditional Irish songs, but Jansch' arrangements of those songs almost bear no resemblance to the traditional songs or any arrangements beforehand, they are so novel and innovative, I think Zeppelin should have given him arranging credit. Thanks Uncle Larry, man I love the channel. I build and repair guitars so seeing your trips to renown luthier shops really interests me. Thanks so much for what you do.
