I’m commenting 3 yrs later, but here I go. It’s so very helpful to see videos like this of a real-life, honest-to-goodness, working kitchen, laundry room, pantry, etc. It truly helps those of us trying to get to a similar point in life. (ie: Can I have an open air space above the stove? How do I hang knives on the wall…do they stay put? Wait! You can have a homestead farm kitchen without a true window! Whaaat!?) Can I mix my metals? Etc etc etc

Who cares what’s trendy. Do what works for you ❤️ I had open shelving in my kitchen. We had lower cabinets and instead of any uppers we had open shelves. After 3 years I HATED IT! seriously anything you put on those shelves gets NASTY. If you cook with any fats the oils get in the air and coat everything. I had a lot of dishes that were more season but I had to have for serving and such and it was such a pain to keep clean. I also had butcher block- it was lovely but VERY high maintenance. I had all this before it became trendy and now when I see it trending I just shake my head. My experience with many of the current trends have told me to go with what lasts, what I like and forget what is trendy!❤️

That Daly Life Yeah, same here! Open shelves in the kitchen are truly not a good idea. I always ‚warn‘ people about it, when I see them planning something like that, but do they listen? No, of course not. 😣 Wish, someone had warned me...remodeling is such a hazzle, especially, if you don’t own the place.

I know this is overstating, but you “saved my life” with your knife holder placement! I had no room under cabinets for my magnetic strip in my new house. SO SAD! Then I found your tour and the lightbulb turned on! A friend cut my long strip in half with a jigsaw (yes, it cuts through magnets! Who knew?) I woke up three times that night, walked to the kitchen to look again and smile. This is MY kitchen! Looking forward to seeing more from you.

I think the only reason people ever had open cabinets was that they couldn't afford the doors. I tried just one open cabinet, and besides the grease and dust, if you have pets you will have fur in your cabinets and on your dishes. If you have cats, they will likely think it is an invitation to see if they can squeeze in there with your dishes. I cringe every time I see some show doing a remodel and putting in open cabinets in a kitchen. The only reason it works in a restaurant is that they are constantly going through their dishes, and cleaning everything. I like your remodel and sensible doors. The hickory is lovely and fits the period and place.

You don't strike me as a woman who worries too much about what "they" say the current trend or style is. It's 'your' home, and it looks lovely, warm, clean and family friendly. (:

This is my first time visiting your channel I love your video and I must say it’s so refreshing to see a home that is not all pure white and curated with the latest trends. I have an older home that is full of beautiful wood and I really enjoy warm and cozy color palettes. It is so refreshing to see a kitchen being used for its intended purpose and not just to take pictures your home seems like a very inviting cozy and warm home full of love

Your home and kitchen are beautiful. I love watching you homestead and watching your children do their chores and help u is so heartwarming. I do what I can growing vegetables but I'm disabled and can't do as much as I'd like. I have. Been fortunate that my husband's job is ran by a wonderful family. They gave their employees some type of veg. Fruit or meat every week, even though the job has nothing to do with food. I started watching you because the food was pileling up. It's brought me so much enjoyment since I lost my job due to disability. I'm doing sauerkraut this week watched you video. Thank you you helped me feel a purpose in life again.

Love your kitchen cabinets and counter tops. I'm not about white cabinets, show to much dirty finger prints. Also open cabinets you'll have to dust. Just one more thing to do. My husband took an old metal railing and hug it long ways, (looks like a ladder) and put hooks on it, to hang our cast iron pans. I love it and get lots of compliments.

I love your cabinets . My deceased husband was a contractor and he built my parents house and all the cabinets and a hutch and entertainment center and bookcases are all out of solid hickory also . there was enough wood left to make me a hutch and bookcase that I love very much. it's very beautiful and solid and timeless .. thank you for for showing your kitchen . I like it very much.

I love those hickory cabinets. I too have the upper cabinets and plan on keeping them. Like everyone else, I like the look of open shelving, but they are sooooo impractical. Especially in the kitchen. The shelves and everything on them collect so much dust and build up from steam, smoke and grease. Cabinets do too, but all you have to do is wipe the doors and the sides of the cabinets. Everything inside is protected. lol I have to balance between what I like and what makes life easier. For me, the storage and ease of maintenance that the closed cabinets offer is a practicality I cannot ignore in my busy life. If I want to display something, I have a some upper cabinets with glass doors. You can see what is in it, but I don't have to keep it dusted. I also cannot imagine not having upper cabinets, like what I see in magazines. The storage of cabinets means more to me than whatever decoration I might like to hang on the wall. (which also will require more dusting. Especially if you heat with a wood stove).

Love your remodel. We had a house that was built in the 1880's. It had square nails, 16-inch wide wood planks for walls and horsehair plaster! I feel your pain! LOL! It is really a labor of love to remodel an old place and make it yours. I love your hickory cabinets! Don't worry about what is trendy at the moment, you have to make your space work for your and make it something you want to look at day after day.

I'm watching and commenting five years later and.... the open cabinet trend is so GONE! You were right to do what works best for you. I re-did my kitchen in 2020 and chose to skip the open shelving, however we went with some rustic cedar open shelving in the laundry room. I'm still good with it, but it's Hard to keep it looking straightened up when you have a big family. I also LOVE the hickory you chose. Very chic and at the same time westerny. I also chose shiplap for the backsplash, and to this date absolutely love it. I think it will never go out of style. Great home you have, you should be very proud of all you've accomplished. From Atlanta, GA! All the best.

My new home was built in 1891 (except for the additions which are also all older than me - I started counting this year from 25 years old PLUS experience🤣 and my kids are a little older than yours. We need to renovate. The house is made of 18” thick limestone. That will always be original - well, until it won’t stand anymore. But we have had soooo much to do. Overwhelm has been the going rate. We are 6 mos behind in all of our projects because 10 days before we got here my husband was surprisingly diagnosed with cancer (he’s never sick). 3 days later surgery, 6 days later travel out of state and VRBO, 1 day later move in. Thanks for all the fabulous ideas for our renovations! We want to keep some of the items as original looking as possible and other elements will be more industrial and/or modern looking. We are fully integrated with WI-FI now!

Loved this "impromptu" style video and tour! I like your sit down educational style too, but mixing it up is fun. Also, very cool info on the quartz counter! This has nothing to do with this video, but awhile back I read about how you make your own tallow.I use a lot of lard in our cooking and never even realised it wasn't pure lard. So, you made me want to make my own, but I kept putting off the idea of driving 30 minutes to the closest meat market, thinking is it really worth the price of gas. Today, while at the grocery store, on a whim I asked the man at the meat counter if he sells leaf fat. He doesn't have any, but tomorrow he is cutting up ribeyes and will have about 5 pound of fat to trim off. He said that he could sell it to me tomorrow for 25 CENTS! All of it! Thank you. He made my day and you have made my day.

Tina here, 2 years after you posted this one. I agree, trendy is just...well. I love the hickory, and open shelves would certainly not be a good idea in a place that is very much lived in! And now you have me considering quartz countertops when we manage to do our kitchen...in a few years? We have the capability to build our own cabinets, and access to Windsor Plywood's selection of any wood from around the world, which of course makes it hard to choose. So many beautiful exotics that can spice up things like hickory or birch with little accents. We like the idea of butcher block but really already ruled it out. Maybe for my big cutting board, since I tend to do all our cutting and wrapping of deer, pork, etc on the kitchen table...which we will be selling once we get the time to put together our own iteration out of old fir beams we got from someone who salvaged buildings on their old farm.

Love everything you and Christian have done with your home. It's livable. I don't strive to stay trendy, modern or up to date because I don't like changing out my entire life every time someone comes up with something new. When we build our house back in the late '80s I left out the wall between our kitchen and living room because everywhere we'd ever lived if I was cooking someone always called me in to see something on tv and something would burn. So we've had open concept from the beginning and it's gotten more open as our kids have made homes of their own and we've taken down more walls. I love videos just like this or even when you're teaching in your kitchen because as I'm listening I'm also looking over your shoulder to see how you display what you use. I have begun to make a few changes in my kitchen and it's helping free up room in my cabinets as I bring the active components out into the open. Thanks for the inspiration!

Great content. Your behind the scenes farmhouse review is just what I needed as we are selling our Texas farm and moving to a new and more remote homestead in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for sharing your landing on quartz counter tops for all the right reasons. We were looking into cement tops but hadn't had many practical reviews to go on. As for the doors you don't like.... I needed a 75" tall door that was 36" wide and could NOT find one anywhere. I ended up making it from three layers of 7 ply plywood. You can design any look you want and we chose a six panel design like the doors you have but any design is just as easy to do. This door is far better made than anything I could buy and it cost me less than $100 including the frame. Thanks again for the tour.

I also enjoy the mix. It’s so interesting to listen to kitchen ideas from different eras regardless if it’s up one’s alley or not. And I’m with you. Leave trendy out of the equation. We recently removed an ugly backsplash in our newly purchased home. It practically destroyed the drywall in the process. Did we go backsplash again? Not on your life. It’s plain painted drywall finish and I’ve hung stained glass fruit ornaments on the walls to match my stained glass fruit ceiling lamp. Trendy? Nope; and I don’t care. I love the colour and craft. We had new natural oak cabinets made all with doors and one with glass. I’m not a fan of floating shelves. To me, they are a cluttered look and personally too distracting. And, things get dusty enough inside let alone out. I do, however think the odd floating shelf does break things up and looks homey. It works really well in your kitchen with the cast iron pots. Incidentally, what a find and for just the right person!! Having said all that, I did have floating shelves built into a closet pantry next to the kitchen. But it can be closed off to hide that cluttered look and makes everything nicely accessible. We removed a previous oak kitchen that had been painted white by the owner. It was starting to peel when we moved in. Fact; you cannot paint over stain! At least not successfully.

What a beautiful, WORKING kitchen!!! This was a "suggested video" & I'm so glad I watched & now subscribed!!! I can totally understand your struggle with taste & being kinda anti-trendy... I have always loved rustic & bohemian styles which might be fashionable now but it's timeless to me... DO WHAT YOU LOVE! You & your husband did a fantastic renovation! Your home looks very inviting & warm!!!

I love your kitchen! We really USE our kitchen too and I love so much of your style! It makes sense! I can’t get behind white cabinets either. All I can think is the constant scrubbing 😳 I love the impromptu style “behind the scenes” type videos. I’d love videos on how you incorporate your kids in farm life!

I am fairly new to your site but really excited to learn more. I love this video, it is real/authentic which seems to be what you are so it is perfect! We just finished a remodel ourselves and had many of the same struggles glad to hear I was not the only one who chose closed cabinets. Like you I am pleased with my choice too.

Love your kitchen. I had these very same hickory cabinets in my rustic home. Now I have a new farmhouse style home with white cabinets.. i love the brightness but really miss the hickory cabinets. You made a good choice.
