Have a friend that uses a cooling tunnel to cool his large solar powered house. It works so well the house never goes above 72 on the hottest day of the year. Of course he doesn't have a greenhouse roof. Love the way you make things work! You are living the dream. Thanks for sharing, John

I made something similar but much smaller - I live in a dense country and only have a small garden and financially and professionally I'm an idiot. Fun to see how you did yours and how you (at times) made sure it was on the lower budget side. Thanks for posting this about your sunken greenhouse!

MIND BLOWN!!!! Ha. Really though, what a great permaculture design to increase the number of times you can use the same water. That is particularly important in your situation where all of your water comes from the sky and not the grid. Very creative

Thanks so much HD! I'm hoping it saves me water and keeps the water out from the walls. There will surely be some that goes down but hopefully not gallons each day. I'm hoping you'll be seeing some greenery in there on the next update. Just a bit more work and then it should be ready :) Joe

Simple but effective, always a good way to go in my opinion. Great to see that you are about to start filling it up. I harvest tomatoes and cucumbers and a few other veggies, all year round from my greenhouse.

That's what I'm hoping for! If I can harvest peppers and tomatoes year round, that would be tops! I still need to figure some type of 'Joubert' wet wall system to incorporate with the cooling tunnel for when the temps start rising again in the spring:)

We are having trouble with our "cool weather" starts here in PHX as well, but our squashes and gourds are still fruiting and flowering like it's June, so I guess that's the silver lining. Good luck with the rest of the build -- try training your chickens to dig your trenches for you. That would be a great video!
@homesteadonomics8 жыл бұрын
haha... yes I wish they could dig them...lol... but they'd rather dig in the freshly dug dirt piles and push it back into the trench..lol! and yes, the silver lining is that we do get a nice little externsion to our season.. That was really creative. I wanted to use geothermal for heating and cooling. But, still not sure I can pull it off here. We normally have too much rain. Which would involve mold. Yet this past summer was hot and dry for the most part. We have the wrong weather this year too. Best wishes to you. E :)

Looks like you've been having alot of fun solving problems and inviting new ways too do things. One question on the drain system, I get lots of dirt particles and things in the bottom of my trays that hold seedlings and such, the drain system seems narrow, will they tend to clog easily? Perhaps a 3 or 4 inch drain pipe would be better??
@homesteadonomics8 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are probably right but I really liked the look and ease of this trim. I think that I will be able to flush it from time to time... but I'll have to wait and see to know for sure:) But if it does, then I might be headed down your idea of using the pipe:) thanks for watching! Joe

Wait for it....... Wait for it....... LOL If you are still open to suggestion, you could add an element of permaculture to the greenhouse and channel that water into a bed across that end fitted with a mini "septic system" type evaporator bed... Or aquaponic bed fitted with an overflow for your bucket ??? Who knows... I trust you'll come up with something creative...
@BumbleBeeJunction8 жыл бұрын
Blowing air across water on that end might help cool? Or bubbling up through it? Higher humidity might cut down on watering? ahahaha :::shutting up now:::
@homesteadonomics8 жыл бұрын
hmmmm... I like your thinking on that one! I really had envisioned some sort of aquaponics at first but thing that I just might not have the room for a good tank based set up... but the growing area fed by the drain would be super cool! ... my mind is thinking... and that's not always a good thing...lol... too many cool ideas to consider:)
@BumbleBeeJunction8 жыл бұрын
We use some Sodium Polyacrylate (diaper crystals) in our seedling mix and have never seen it affect growth in anything we've started... It may help to absorb extra on watering day, and leech it slower on hot/ dry days in the greenhouse... Let me know if you have trouble sourcing it... I know some good places...
@homesteadonomics8 жыл бұрын
Hmm... now I'm gonna have to check into that! :) Joe
@christianest-pierre40028 жыл бұрын
One very good tank that is cheap enough, light weight, easy to work with and excellent for your health is a copper tank. And maybe you could have this tank made on it's length and fit under your system, the hearth, and made like trays that you can open as you wish. I love your concept but only one thing i would never use in any project... concrete, it tend to grow a poisonous mold in a humid area so i would have a hard time with trusting my greenhouse with this material. When i seen you putting copper pipes into your draining system i thought that it was a great idea because again it's good for health, even for plant and also because it helps bringing that better positive ions around them which help with the growth. So if you ever see your plant growing too fast and fragile it could be for having too much of the metal element in the surrounding, you also have iron in there. Anyway again i really do like the way you did it, it inspire me and i am now a new subscriber. Great job buddy.

He Joe, your greenhouse is fantastic with verry good ideas from the great to the smal parts, i wish you every season great plants, if you like i send you special seeds from Tomatos or Peppers for every jear not hybride from Monsanto. You now i bild plants in my greenhouse from the seeds and sell the plants on the market, if its time to plant in the earth. I live in Germany and my women is from Bosna ( Yougoslavia ) she has green hands and speak with her plants, no she isnt crasy, plants feel the footsteps and your voice from the frequency, every nabor ask us what do you doing with your plants, i make joks tell every mornig you have to pis on her plants and its verry important only mornig urin. I offer you Bosna seeds from pepper, great long and sweet, also big tomatos its a wunderful tomato big maby 550 gram, sweet and tasty - for free. Maby you have interrest seeds for me than we can exchance. If you stay on facebook then look to Heubacher Pflanzen we sell every Jaer 4 - 5 thausends plants on the market but is havy work and in the springtime we have frosty nights and you must save the plants i have in my big greenhouse an oilstove (like diesel) for cold nights, but the peaple dont bay a plant for over 2 - 3 € she like it more for nothing... Next time is a next chance. Kind wishes from Germany - Helmut

I like what you are doing but I think if you did it a little different you didn't need to make retaining walls you are in hard rock and you could have used that jack leg and firmed up the rock walls with split sets or mackanickal bolts the same stuff they use in hard rock mining to keep the shaft or tunnels from caving in. I am getting ready to make a in ground green house and it is in sand. I am definitely open minded and there are thousands of ways to do things some are better than others and it all depends on the environment and materials .
