About 9 years ago in Maryland we had a hurricane . I lost power for 10 days . It was hot but I still had water and a bunch of books . At home we didn’t even have cell phone service because the hurricane took out the 2 towers nearby . We cooked every thing on the grill , I made pasta and pizza on the grill . But at night to see the sky and how clear it was and to see all the stars I could never see from my back yard was very humbling .

I think I am doing OK but this was a real wake up.....I dont know how well we would do.....I have generators but they won't last long.....I think of my kids and grandkids as they have there whole lives in front of them....God Help us even the ones who think it wouldn't be that bad...stay safe and free my friend...good job with this series ...its needed

yes it does...I was without power for over 9 months, neighbors stole electricity from me and I got a bill for over 3 grand I am disabled and low low income. I live in central California and man we had 3 wks straight where the temps were over 100 degrees and only dropped into the mid 80s at night that was torture. My main problem was I have copd (breathing problems) and I have an oxygen making machine, I couldnt use it and almost had to be admitted to the hospital more than once during this time of no electricity. The power company said oh well to bad even tho I was paying every dime I had on the bill every month...When I finally got it paid off they charged me 500.00 deposit and another 150.00 to have the guy come turn it back on....luckily I had a gas stove and hot water heater as I would have been unable to carry wood or water. Now if the lights even flicker I literally have a major panic attack and have to take medication and lay down...Trust me there is nothing fun about it....

@@dorislacaze8475 My family lived out of the state and were having money issues themselves and couldnt help. there were 2 charities in the area that help with situations like that but they are only given a certain amount per yr for the programs and sadly I fell between when they spent it all and when they would get more. To be honest I am not sure I could survive it again as my breathing has gotten worse since then...I have only had my power back 4 1/2 months.

Tessie I have made mini logs from the cardboard TP rolls stuffed them with paper and used them to have a fire and then add twigs to it:) Works quite well :) I save all glass jars and save most everything:) I use rain water to water the garden :) I have successfully used collected rain water treated with a drop of Clorox bleach and it tastes just fine :) Always good to have back up for cooking and washing I have my fire grill I can use:) Maybe a plus side that you are not so connected to the internet when your power is out:) Just a peaceful day doing just like the pioneers did:) Yes I agree you need to use common sense when having to make do with what you have :) So much of us are so accustomed to having everything sterile :) This is a great message Tessie I sure hope people will learn from this:) A time to slow down and enjoy the simple life instead of rushing around:) Yes a good positive attitude is makes everything better:) Always keep smiling :) Love you my sister:) God Bless you and Ken:)

Enjoyed your video Tessie😍 Here in Louisiana we are expecting Hurricane Laura to come in as hurricane 3. We will more than likely be without electricity for a few days. With Hurricane Katrina we were without electricity for 3 weeks. We set up a kitchen area and a laundry area, then at night we used the generator so we could sleep without the mosquitoes eating us up. Several families would get together in one room And would make beds on the floor. It sure makes you thankful when electricity comes back on. ❤️

(Edit: if you build a fire, have a means to put out runaway fire as a safety precaution.A fire blanket, bucket of sand, or bucket of water, etc. I know you know this Tess, but some newbies may not. Be safe yaall.)A lot of us have dealt with the loss of electricity quite often. This was way before California roll outs. The Appalachian area have people that live with a lot storm down electric or try to use less. Most old timers know to have back ups to cover water(hand pump), kerosene lamps & stoves, wood cookstoves etc.

Starting in June, it's hurricane season here in Central Florida. It doesn't end until November 30. Sometime the electric can be off for several weeks after a big one hits. I've just learned to make sure I have enough canning jars and lids to process anything I've got in the freezer. I also stop making any cheese that has to age for more than a few days until hurricane season is over. It's usually so hot after a hurricane, and the mosquitoes can be fierce. We prepare and we deal with it. Being prepared makes all the difference in the world - It's peak season now, so my freezer only has food that we can either eat in a day, or can be pressure canned. When we get a hurricane warning, we make ice like crazy to put in the coolers to preserve what we have in the refrigerator, and with luck, the lights are back on in a week or so. Last year, I bought battery powered fans to use at night, and LED lights. This year, I bought a small solar charger that can keep our cell phones and lap tops charged - that's quite a luxury!

Place water in gal jugs, but all the way full expand when frozen. Place at least 4 jugs, one on each corner. It will help your freezer keep foods longer.You could freeze more jugs if you knew a hurricane was coming. Just a thought.

Tessie, I really enjoy your videos. I started prepping 12 yrs ago when the market started to crash. I cashed out 401k and ps cash for land and put av49ft camper on it. Lived 5yrs without water, 8 without a well or septic. I learned to live like I was camping in the woods. Did the fire drills with no power and I learned alot. Worked on farms to learn growing and preserving I am still learning new things and your videos add to it. Thank you for sharing your life. Hi Tees another good video. We had to do this over 10 years ago. Ice storm no power for 2 weeks. Did the same things your doing. wash unmentionables in a big jar wit soap and then rinsed and hung in bathroom then on hangers in front of the fire. Cooked pizza in iron skillet and a little cake mix in small one for strawberry short cake. Wasn't gonna let them ruin,

Wood is not plentiful here in Arizona desserts. I’m getting a solo stove from someone on Facebook market for $30 can run a fire with little twigs and broken up brush which we have plenty of. I have cook stoves but my back up fuel would eventually run out. I think I would save that for canning anyway. I know a lot of things might be harder and take more time but I also think things would be more peaceful without electricity. Being without water I think would be Devastating. It would be hard for a lot to understand the importance of conserving resources.

Hi Tessie sis. 🌞 Great info! I remember quite a few years ago when the grid went down on the East Coast. The car that I was driving was overheating and I got stranded on the expressway trying to get up the ramp. Some nice young gentlemen stopped and pushed me up there. I was using a cell phone and attempting to call Allstate motor club and it was not able to get through...no service. Luckily a state trooper came along and he took me home. My husband and I went back out there in the heat waiting for someone to come to tow it after I finally was able to reach Allstate. I was supposed to start a new job the next day and had just come from orientation where we sat with no lights or AC. That was not pleasant at all and it really wasn't as long a period of time as it actually felt. Never want to go through that again.

You said you can’t get hot water to the kitchen. My husband is a plumbing contractor in Tampa, Florida. He said, “ Take a long piece of plastic tubing made for hot water, and cap the end and push it under the Mobil home, from the water heater to the kitchen sink. Shove underneath the trailer to the kitchen sink. Don’t have to get under the home. You can use shark bite fittings to tie it in.Then drill a hole in the bottom of the cabinet. This will be a new hotline for the sink💜 Love your channel

I can cook outside. Our house was built in 1910 so it has a lot of windows which allows for great lighting. Water could be an issue and keeping food cold in the summer would definitely be an issue. I want to build a cold room in our basement. I have been checking into how to build one. I haven’t figured out the cost yet though. I also don’t know how we would hear our house in the winter without electricity even though we have a gas heater because it still uses electricity. I would like to get a wood stove but not sure about it. Thank you for your videos because they help me think things through and have a back up plan. Not having electricity doesn’t seem so horrible.

Love this video, makes me really think how blessed we are, Could you imagine how much hotter and harder it would be to can and put away all the garden food in the summer with no electric, and in the winter, trying to get up all during the night to keep a wood burning stove from going out, and doing laundry during cold, snowy winter would have to hang all over the house to dry...and we have a lot of animals, hogs, cattle, chickens, that would need water, we have pipe that feeds down out of the mountains right now for a back up, but that only works until water gets low in summer, then we use garden hose. I like how you say it's all about attitude, and staying positive, I agree.100%

What will pump the water to the livestock and your home when the power is out? Recommend you figure out quickly how you are going to do that. Grid down would be for months if not years. Pray pray pray about this.

Excellent video. Everyone needs to get a cast iron Dutch oven and a couple of frying pans. If you can keep 40 - 80 extra pounds of charcoal so you can use the grill to cook on in and emergency. I live in hurricane country so you need to be able to be without power for at least 3 weeks just in case.

After Soview unions fall my small village in Georgia didn't had any electricity sometimes for 2 or 3 or even 4 days in a week .I remember as child living like this .The day was easy , especially summers, winters was more difficult but we always had a warm home because we burned woods in fire stove , we were cooking in that fire stove and always had hot water , and we always had oil lams at least 10 lamps in the house .

My little cottage was spared from the devastation of Hurricane Laura a few days ago, but an hour away they will be without water and electricity for weeks and months. Years ago we had no electricity for 5 days and nights due to hurricane but we had water. I had 160 mosquito bites from sleeping outside in the 90 degree heat and humidity. Oh Tessie, the video was informative and entertaining but it was something you said that has really tugged at me. It is what you said about attitude. That attitude makes everything better. I have more than most and on the flip side, I don't have as much as some. My house is also a very broken mobile home and for some time now I have not had a very good attitude about things, I have been kind of an angry person and resenting living in a broken house. But I think you are right maybe if I changed my attitude I would feel a whole lot better and make others in my household feel better too. I have been trying to get my focus on Jesus more. Tessie, you can set water in milk jugs on the asphalt, cement, stone driveway or even on a rock or in a black bag. I leave it out all day like sun tea...but that is just to heat it. If you suspect micro organisms you need to boil or bleach per CDC/FEMA instructions. If I need clean rain water use a clean milk jug and a clean (not used for meat) cutting board one of those clear ones and fold into a cone duct tape shut (on the outside) support milk jug as breeze will tip it. Put the small end of funnel into the jug and tape in place on the outside. Use tape where the water will not touch it. boil if you think there may be microbes present. If you are in the middle of clear sky with almost no breeze you shouldn't. and if using clean jug that had water in it vs. milk and a clean item that you are using for the catchment part. Research and check out instructions to your satisfaction. Solar ovens if they will boil can be used, parabolic cooker, rocket stoves are good too and campfires, grills and campstoves of course. Lots of options.

I would give a lot for a deafening silence. All the years I spent near pneumatic powered machinery. I have a constant background noise. It's called tinnitus. In the most silent moments, it is still there with me. When I first got it, I thought I would go mad. Now it's actually kind of comforting. After having lost two dogs in less than a year's time. I have one thing in my life that will never leave me.

In the 1990s, for two Winters simultaneously. Our electricity was out for up to 10 days. The first event was called Ice Storm. You could hear the trees shattering from the water within freezing and expanding. shortly after that my dad and I made a lot of money cleaning up those trees and selling them for firewood. The one time our electricity went out. I found out our freezer would run on DC electricity. I ran an extension cord out to the porch where nine batteries saved our food. Although it was a disaster. There were some silver linings. The grocery stores were giving things away almost, rather than see them spoil. And as it was tree shatteringly cold, we could leave our new purchases out in the garage to stay cold. But as bad as it got. People knew that it would be made okay. That is not the current case.
