My state doesn’t offer a program like this, but I really appreciate that the food doesn’t end up in the garbage. I feel like we, as Americans, tend to waste a lot. Good job!

Blessings all around. I found a local grocery store that gives me its produce they pull for my bunnies. People only want to buy the best looking produce. They call me to pick up. I get 3 to 5 boxes every 7 to 10 days. Most times it brings me to tears. What my bunnies can eat I feed them. The remainder I cull through and wash a second time, freeze, dehydrate or can. I give a lot away to family and neighbors. There is so much food that would otherwise be going in the dumpster I am greatly blessed

There is a grocery store near me that has what they call “ugly produce” it’s all the fruits and vegetables that are not so pretty but just fine to eat and they cost a fraction of the “pretty produce.” It’s a great way to save money.❤️

This was standard in stores when I was a kid. Meat was also discounted considerably when it began turning a bit brown. Now they gas meat so it stays red but most people know brown meat is the most tender. Nothing wrong with it. I'm 73 so that was a long time ago.

A store I shop at regularly has awesome produce guys that showed the code dates on when the mushrooms will be marked down so I go in and inventory them a few times a month to find the clearance ones to be marked down I just ask and they are happy to know they have one less thing to do lol. I dehydrate them and seal them in jars. I prefer these over any canned or even fresh for cooking they end up with such an earthy flavor from dehydration

Very good. Some local Churches do have a drive up food bank scheduled at a day of week at an hour time. The Church distributes donated foods that Chain Grocery Stores such as Walmart donate for redistribution. Usually the Church Staff only ask for your name for their records keeping.

You are blessed to be able to get food whete you work. I could certainly benefit from such a program. It's getting harder to make ends meet. On SS and wanted to have a small garden this year, but health problems kept me from even having a couple of tomato plants. But I'm feeling a bit better now, so I'm asking God to give me the health to have a garden next spring. Enjoy watching you do your to preserve food. Blessings to you and yours.

When I was a little girls when my mother would send my to the store they would throw out a lot of produce that they felt wasn’t salable and I would rummage through whatever they had thrown out and bring home as much as I could carry and the mom would clean it up cut out what wasn’t good and serve it for dinner, my dear mother was a good cook she made everything thing taste good.

I just watched you program this morning. I really enjoyed it. I shop monthly in the Lebanon County area at 4 Mennonite and Amish stores for myself and my daughters - to stretch our food budgets. There are some great deals available. I was really interested in the organization you mentioned where you could get food that is not perfect. We live in Harrisburg, but I grew up on a farm in Berks Co near Shartlesville so I am used to using not perfect fruits and vegetaables. I am not sure how to get the info about the salvage organization.

As a child one of 4 with single mother sometimes our cupboards were very nearly bare but our neighbour kept pigs and on a Friday night he would take his cattle truck to a bakery in the city where he would collect all the bread that hadn't sold. Alot of the bread was in packaging so once our chores were done we would go and unwrap all the bread and throw it into the pigs. At the end there would be a huge pile of soft bread and we would jump into it for some fun, then before we went home we knew the farmer had chosen some special bread and rolls for us that he put in the truck cab for us. Still remember the treat of having sliced white bread instead of the much healthier wholemeal that our mother would buy, it was more filling but as a small child I was always embarrassed as I thought my brown bread wad dirty because most of the other children had white bread. It's funny how children perceive things, this was 65 years ago. I also remember my mother saoking the wheat we had for the chooks and then cooking it like fried rice with onion and spinach for tea. Back then there was little support for poor families but thankfully things are a lot better now with a lot of food rescue programs and better financial support for single parents. Blessings from Australia

Blessings Tessie! I sure wish we had something like this around in my state. I make too much, but don't make enough; seems that even my parents were caught in the middle too. I'm so glad that you have access to this wonderful program as well as those you serve! I love that you' tell people to be careful of doubtful food (no matter where it comes from) and that you reuse the glass jars. Never do I toss a jar! Blessings to all 🥰

There are so many people caught in the middle, not qualifying for any assistance but not making enough $$ to pay all the bills. I think there will be more people added to the numbers.

Our churches in town never ask any questions if you go to the food pantry. Have you tried your local churches?

@@TheNoonie50 churches would also love volunteers to help hand food (and some do clothing as well) out if you have the time available to do so. Its a great way to be involved in the community and help our, with the added convenience of taking food you can use home at the end of the night. We organized a couple of outings when my sons were in cub scouts... great way to teach and involve children early.

Great video Tessie! It's great you save as much food as you can. I don't waste anything , An elderly German lady worked for my mother's restaurant many years ago and she had been in a camp during the war, She said "Food is gold" and to never waste it. I have always remembered this. God bless you 🙏.

Very very true , having Food and knowing there won’t be shortages in the House hold especially with Kids is a godsend. Groceries stores throwing away way to much edible Food I used to work in one , it was (is)a shame

Yes, potatoes are expensive and hard to find that aren't already gone bad sometimes.

I am glad you take the leftover food. I often watch dumpster diving videos on KZbin and it never fails to shock me how much perfectly good food goes to waste in this nation. Stores throw away whole boxes of undamaged can goods and other foods which are not expired. While I would never take meat or eggs thrown away in the dumpster, I have seen people find fruit and vegetables that are in good condition, as well as cases of unopened water! Unbelievable! Thanks for another interesting video! Take care and God bless you always my sister!

In the cold wintertime I have found that it’s often safe to take vacuum sealed meat.

If the meat doesn't smell off, it's fine. Just cook it well. Chicken sometimes smells a bit off but if you rinse it well, it smells fresh again. If you still aren't comfortable eating it, cook it up for your dog or cat. They have strong acids in their stomachs and can eat things we can't without any problems.

I've been involved in similar food give-away operations in this area. I have always observed that people do not go hungry in this country for lack of food. Rather, hunger is because of rules and regulations and because of poor management. Crazy amounts of food are thrown out every day!
