The IPP... the IDAHO PASTURED PIG. It has made quite a lot of noise in the homesteading world.
There are a lot of big claims surrounding it. What is fact and what is myth?
Today we share an interview on the channel with Mouse Creek Farm who has been raising these pigs for years.
Kirstin answers lots of our IPP questions including do you have to supplement their diet or can they live off pasture alone? Do they ever root? And how is their meat production and quality?

She is awesome. We are have two on order with her in the spring. We struggled buying and raising in the fall and winter. She is so real and honest. She is authentic and loves what she does. That means a lot when considering a breeder. I am excited our first pair. Blessings

I raised some pigs years ago and fed them primarily hay. These were just regular feeder pigs. These became, as my wife and children said "monsters" who could jump a 4' fence.They were tall and had extremely lean meat. I gave them some pig feed to start them and corn occasionally. But, believe or not, they absolutely went nuts over hay.

I’ve raised Kune Kune for a few years now and absolutely love them. The meat is great but you don’t get a large quantity. I’m exploring the idea of maybe trying IPP in the future.

We did blue butt & duroc crosses, and full durocs, York & hamp mixes... they ALL taste exponentially better when pasture raised, vs. store bought, and they all root, eat grass & bugs, and thrive on growing when fed things like whole veggies, with minimal corn inputs. But truly any of them that were Duroc or w/ Duroc mixed in had such amazing marbling and richness. Overall, I truly believe it’s a bit more important to have a healthy piglet, with healthy parentage & environment, even if the breed isn’t “designer” at least while you’re learning and figuring things out. They are WORLDS better, than the alternative, even if they aren’t IPPs haha

The first time I heard someone mention IPP’s they said they “only eat the grass, and don’t root”..... I’ve never met a pig that doesn’t root, even pigs raised on concrete haha

I have three Kune Kune pigs and they have never once dug a hole. I feed grain , apples, carrots , bananas . They are strictly pets,Their pen is totally cleared of grass, but let them out on grass afew hours a day. Never once did they root. I have had them for over a year. They are Grazersonly!!! Just to let you know.

@@romina2222100 That's awesome!! Like a little team of lawn mowers! My comment wasn't intended to say "no non-rooting pigs exist" - just to say I've never met any haha I guess I've just had more experience with piggles that like to hunt grubs and roots!

Never root is definitely an exaggeration but we’ve raised IPPs for 4 years now and several breeds before this, there’s definitely no comparison. Our traditional breeds made it look like we’d plow a half acre paddock in a day with just 4 pigs, now we can run 16 IPPs on 1/2 acre for 7-10 days and it looks like we have sheep out there when they leave(we’ve got videos on our channel to prove it 😂)

I loved pigs as a kid so much and no amount of being yelled at to stay out of the pig pen that they were dangerous ever changed my mind those pigs loved me as much as I loved them and our boars never hurt me in anyway they were big hams in every sense of the word and they loved the attention.

We raise heritage breeds AND regular breed pigs. What I can tell you is this, pastured pigs will indeed eat the top grasses. BUT! no matter what the breed is, they will dig and root for more food if the top grasses are eaten. We have Meishan, Mangalitsa, Red Wattle, IPP, Red Wattle/GOS cross, and Hampshire. Guess what. They ALL root and dig depending upon the food availability. The IPP are a real problem right now because they are new and the bloodline are throwing such a huge variety of pig types. Now that is here in Montana with 2 very different bloodlines but I can say that we end up with such a wide variety in pig types that IPP is just not refined enough for us YET. I say yet because we need to keep refining this breed for commercial type use, As it is right now, there are just too many variables in every litter.

We raise pigs in a greenhouse in the winter. We are vegetable growers and are too busy in the summer to mess around with pigs. We find that they grow very well because of the warm days even though the nights are cold. I leave a big pile of straw out for them which they will sleep on or sometimes bury themselves in. We only grow a few for ourselves and friends so this is not a claim for commercial growers but for the homesteaders it works very well.

also the domesticated pig was domesticated from a type of forest pig and the forest doesn't have grains growing in it. what the forest does have is a abundance of different plants. that have different minerals, proteins, and fibers forests also have natural salt licks that provide minerals. the reason I bring this up is 2 fold, 1st its been proven that feeding livestock grain makes the animal produce negative omega 6. Which when transferred to the meat makes the meat develop various bacteria's and parasites like salmonella and tapeworms. Whereas grass-fed or pasture fed meat never develops these problems because the animal is eating its natural diet. Therefore there is no negative omega 6 causing these problems also I did a test on this years ago myself. I took 2 jars and in 1 jar I put grass-fed beef in it and in the other jar I put grain-fed beef in it. Then I sealed the jars and left them in the hot 120 degree Arizona sun for a week and when I came back the jar with the grass-fed beef had no tapeworms or mold or bacteria growing on it. But the jar with the grain-fed beef in it was loaded with 100's of tapeworms and was covered in green mold. the 2nd point I want to make is as long as your pasture has a variety of forage plants like legume plants for protein such as alfalfa and clover. fibrous grass plants for fiber like fescue and sidewheat grama and mineral rich plants for minerals like forage chicory. You will never have to feed grain to your livestock ever my recommendation for a pasture seed mix is is 50 percent mineral rich plant seeds, 25 percent legume plant seeds, and 25 percent fibrous grass seed for a pig pasture.

IPP is going to be my 1st pig - can I play it off as a potbelly - the only pig breed that the city allows? I'm sure that I can, but the big question is that I live in the city on 1/4 acre - how is that going to work out vs pot belly pigs?

I'm confused, bc Joel Salatin grows pigs on pasture and he does a mix of larger breeds, Duroc, etc. I have an AGH/KK boar be that I need to two mamas of the same, and two big pink pigs, Hamp/York/ Duroc. My big/ little mixes have the grain requirement of these large hog. I'm still growing out there first generation and they had buddies in the stall competing for food. 9 months at 125 lbs.... Not so awesome. My AGH/KK finish the same age on a cheaper feed bill. And my field? Is a mud hole.

I don’t want a pig that needs grain. I’m sure with food scraps and pasturing they can satisfy their omnivorous diet. I also want them to root. Tons of oaks and walnuts plus others in my pasture and silvopasture. Also not keen on larders. I’m considering AGH, Kune Kune and IPP. If I need to feed grain, I’ll just raise Berkshire, or Berkshire/Duroc mixes.

The reality is def in the middle. The Kune Kune will gain with less grain, but will suffer from malnutrition on grass only. If your strategy is complimentary enterprises, and you can supplement with the butchering waste, and waste from market gardening enterprises, even by going as far as less than 10% of the diet coming from high carbohydrate small grains. Minerals should be available (as with ANY animal) unrestricted.

I have always wondered why omnivores are fed grain. A omnivore eats plants and fruit and meats, too much grain adds too much carbohydrates which creates too much sugars so if humans and dogs and cats can get diabetes then why not farm animals than get too much sugar?
@lukeryuzaki2328
@lukeryuzaki2328 2 жыл бұрын
Because grains can forcefully make the livestock gain butcher weight faster (of course with some serious side effect). And grain is cheaper in term of meeting USDA regulations if you want your business to go mainstream. As per health benefit for your family, feeding a variety of food, and let the livestock age naturally is the way to go.

she obviously hasn't heard of a forage plant called " forage chicory " which is a perennial forage plant that naturally has all the minerals pigs need. And because of this if you add " forage chicory " to your pasture seed mix you will never need to feed your pigs grain if you don't want to feed them grain.
