The geometry of a log trailer IS the lifting lever. Back the log trailer over the log and pick your spot.Then lift the tongue of the trailer high into the air until the apex of the trailer rests on the log. Chain it tight at the contact point while the tongue is in the air. Chained? Now pull the tongue back down to the log. The log will lift off the ground. Now ratchet strap it securely,, No winch required.

That worked really well, but for a heavier trailer with same concept. Look into a used LPG tank carrier. They are tandem axle, have removable support bars for bottom of tank, and a massive 12,000 lb winch. Easily carry some very large logs and they are street legal to boot!

I was expecting you to use that log lift. I would have used larger binder chain that are used on tractor trailers and of course legally I would consider using a slow moving vehicle triangle on the back of log or a red flag and maybe the portable trailer lights that can be attached to the trailer. Glad you made it safe and sound!

This Old farm boy cringes not having a slow moving triangle even though you have someone following you. Boys need to leave a nice distance between implement and vehicle following so someone can pass between you. And then go around you then permit. Always check your hubs as well. I advocated for the dump bed winch on removable receiver but I thought of your log arch and assumed the distance was too far, glad you thought of that. They make front receivers for trucks also which enables you to back trailers into crazy spots. In terms of working with what you had you nailed it. I've used ratchet straps as comealong as well in a pinch. Hauling it on the road like you did was totally ok with me, one thing to consider though is the issue is not only those behind you but more importantly oncoming traffic. Good work, I like these kind of out of box projects demonstrating self reliance, they are fun to do.

great problem-solving. i'm surprised the log arch stub axles held up over bumps in the road and you seemed to have no deformation of the frame. also the log arch tracked really nicely behind your truck. result is you preserved a lot of high value board feet in that log with a minimalist approach. the one question i had was about orienting the log and why you chose to put the big end toward the back

Lol! I'm sorry friend, but you made this WAY more complicated than it needed to be. The purpose of the long tongue on the arch is use IT as the lever! In the future, once you get the arch over your log, just tip the tongue up in the air until the top of the arch touches the top of the log. Affix your clamps to the top of the log (just as you did) and THEN tip the tongue down using the winch at the FRONT (Closest to your hitch) end of your log! once the tongue is down, affix the safety/transport chains around the log & to the arch front and rear & your ready to tow.

While I applaud the problem-solving efforts you provided, I do have to mention a serious safety concern that I have that took place even before you got behind the wheel to tow the log. I could only find one other mention of it in the comments. You should never hook your winch cable to itself. This is asking for serious trouble, which could result in equipment damage, serious injury, or even death. This is an almost certain way to cause the cable to fail, and when it does, it will be under extreme strain. All of that stored energy will have to go somewhere, which is how injuries or death can occur. As for the concerns about towing the log on the roadway, I believe those were addressed in the other comments.

In Arkansas, the only thing you needed to make it legal would have been to attach a red rag on the back end of the log to flap in the wind to let folks know behind yo that you had a long load. I see that all the time on loaded logging trucks. It is called flagging the load!

Sketchiest part of the entire procedure was lifting the log arch after unloading the log. It would have made much better sense to lift the arch from the ball and pull the truck away before lifting the arch higher. The chance of that hitch damaging the bumper or tailgate of the truck was substantial.

That log hauler is definitely not designed for road use with that size load. It has no brakes nor springs nor lights and the axles are tiny. You could easily haul that log on the field with an ATV once it was loaded because if you get it balanced, the tongue weight should be minimal. I pick up logs that size on my log hauler by hand to attach to my tractor tow hitch. I just can’t pull it through the woods by hand.

Great job, Adam. I approach every dilemma by noting that every problem has a solution. My job is to find that solution. If Plan A doesn't work, go to Plan B, then Plan C, etc. etc. On a much smaller scale, my two sons and I had to somehow get a big, heavy Husky workbench up the steps of my deck onto the back porch. It was really heavy, but our biggest problem was a lack of anything to grasp to give us greater leverage. As you did, we had to get creative. I attached to the side of the workbench a couple suction cup handles, the type an elderly person might use in the shower for stability, to give me something to grasp. I was then able to lift it up the steps as my sons pushed from below. As you showed getting a big heavy log from one place to another, the solution may require some creativity, but it is out there. Awesome job. Keep up the great work!

Forestry stuff in Ohio is deemed "Agricultural activity." Also, you don't need plates or registration on a log splitter, cement mixer, or other "construction" equipment. I doubt a Sheriff deputy here would cause you an issue, but I can't say the same for the Ohio State Highway Patrol. They would ticket their own mother. Oh, and yes, for the Pennsylvania folks, the Sheriff Dept in Ohio can do traffic enforcement and cite for speeding, DUI, ect.

Adam, a couple of things you may want to do next time is hook the winch directly up to the truck battery with it running to get the most power to it. Also an winch gets all of it pulling capacity with the first wrap of winch cable on the drum, the more wraps the less pulling power.
@HometownAcres

Which is the secondary reason behind having as few wraps as possible on a drum at the beginning. The first reason is because otherwise the wire rope (know to laymen as cable) will bury itself.
