The original HW was and still is an almost perfect story driven rts that gets all parts just right. Its a miracle that despite being relics debut title, it was designed by a team that felt like they had years and years of experience designing and perfecting 3d space rts.....it was THAT good. The original story was simple, heartfelt and pure, the controls very easy to get a hang of, very functional and gritty unit designs, orgasmic soundscapes and utterly jaw dropping galactic backdrops. Even then I had a feeling that the story couldn't be improved upon and that the game was complete and at its peak......and looks like that still holds. From what I have read and heard, HW3 has a more personal story and so not as epic as the original.....which had the weight of survival of your entire race on your shoulder. Maybe it's just me but HW3 also looks too busy and cluttered. For me its not nostalgia but the original just got too many things right, whereas HW3 just isnt giving me a hard boner.

Purely on a narrative front - HW1 is still one of the best executed narratives in the history of games. HW3's narrative is like okay, I don't think its as good as Deserts of Kharak which i would consider very well executed - its much more compelling and feels a lore more like homeworld to me. Like, I still don't actually know who the bad lady is supposed to be after playing through it twice. The animatics worked a lot better then the 3d cinematics. The total summary is just the use of adagio of strings - HW has this beautiful turning point moment they constructed that kicks the whole game off, and that the player participates in, and then it just lands with the music and just bam total gut punch, beautiful. HW3 has a choral variation on the song which is cool, but it just kind of plays at the start of a mission, it doesn't even really feel like the biggest moment in the story, i guess its one of the bigger moments but its not really that important, and it just plays for a few seconds and then its done and its like okay? That being said I do really like HW3, the gameplay is great, definitely better then HW1 which is a bit plodding, esp in MP.

@@enkiduo HW3 had a lot going for it and in my eyes fumbled the ball on the most important part of any Homeworld game, the story and narrative. It's a beautiful game there's no question about that, but it feels like a bland story held together by amazing set piece levels. It also does stuff, then never brings them up again, like the hyperpacing into the asteroid in level two and is never brought up again ever. To the story and narrative, the previous games had the player invested in it HW1 we are behind the crew and want them to make their way home through all the adversities, with the big payoff of the battle for your homeworld in the final level. Cataclysm, we are rooting for the miners throughout the story and backing them with trying to close Pandoras Box on the plague they unleashed accidentally, with their payoff being start of the final level you identify as the Warship compared to the Mining ship in the first mission. HW3 strange things happening in this region of space, old protagonist goes to investigate and doesn't return. New super, super smart protag goes to see what's up, turns out it's a crazy power mad woman enslaving people to her will and wanting to destroy the galaxy to remake it in here image (can we take a sec to just say how dumb that is in any media). Anyway, it should have been aliens or something unknown to expand the story or have something unique, instead, nope just ships that almost look like ours. Also people have been waiting forever for this game and you extra fumble by not putting any easter eggs of previous factions or Kiith in the opening level when they're at Higara??
@Shadowdrag00n6 ай бұрын
Can we also talk about the ship sizes as well. The mothership is right, but everything under the battleship look kinda off, like the fighters and corvettes are almost the same size and next to the frigates they feel off. Also, why does the interceptor look more to the old Taiidan fighter compared to a Higarian design??
@enkiduo6 ай бұрын
@@Shadowdrag00n The scaling really drove me crazy - i found there is an option in the settings to turn off non linear scaling that makes that a lot better. I found they really made the mothership feel small, like in every mission there are things bigger then it, its like the 10th biggest ship in the first level. In HW1 its the biggest thing around for a bunch of missions, and then its derelects or other stations bigger then it, it really feels a class above other ships.

The narrative feels very messy to me, like a lot of modern movies it feels like they just ran with the first draft, it feels like a lot of cuts and rewrites were made but they didn't spend the time properly integrating them. Like I still do not know who the bad lady is - its very awkwardly assembled, and really stands in contrast to HW1 which is just a masterclass in this stuff.

actually being able to upgrade ones ships off the main ui via a tiny sub menu; as opposed to another tech-tree to go digging through is vastly superior for RTS games imho. Glad homeworld 3 is trying to stay mostly true to it's roots and not just appeasing to the generic strategy game muscle memory of people who never really played those games much. At least outside of the new control scheme. lol I will have fun figuring out if it really is faster than just using the legacy mode to use shift for 3d movements.

A lot of the problem about the ships being confusing is that this is like the only game in the series with quite this amount of unit similarity, all the ships look visually very similar, which is hellish in battle. Hw1/2 did this much better, with very distinct silhoettes for all the ships. Also, it's got the least *amount* of unit types in the series too, which makes how they managed to make them all so confusingly similar even more weird.

I love Homeworld. I know a bunch of talented people worked on this(before they got fired). But I can't lie. It's just not good. The storytelling is baffling and doesnt feel like Homeworld at all. The gameplay is subpar. It lacks content given what they are asking for it. Along with the DRM and DLC nonsense. Given the state of BBI. Gearbox. And their parent companies(which are going through a breakup and restructuring) I don't foresee a major overhaul of the game to fix it.

OG HW is one of my top 5 favourite games of all time. It was the atmosphere, story and music that I remember vividly. Blew my mind. This ... thing... does not even come within 17 lightyears of what that experience was like. Thoroughly disappointing. Also, it is "chAmping at the bit", not "chOmping". I don't think I have heard 10 people in my lifetime say it correctly.

And thank you for the comment too… great points. HW was so special… my fear is if it’s just us older gamers who see it that way or do younger gamers of today play it and go “wow, this is incredible.”. It was pure copium and my whole of Falling Frontier will be the game to bring it all back.
@siubhan20476 ай бұрын
@@cockneygamer think about the premise of the original... The set up. Ignore the gameplay for a moment. Here you are, the only survivors of your race, sent forth into the great unknown, not because of science or a sense of exploration, but because you are alone and have to. You need a home. With that is sown the seeds of desperation, where every new thing you discover on your path is not just a mystery but also an obstacle. When I first encountered the Bentusi I experienced anxiety. Who were they? What did they want? Can they be trusted? OG HW set up the story to make me feel a certain way. It didn't overexplain and left a lot to my imagination. It went in hard on the mystery of space. Remember the graveyard? Now compare HW3. The premise here strips away ALL of that by lowering the stakes entirely. It leans greatly on characters to tell a story extantly, whilst in OG the story was intrinsic... It was US. You the player was not just someone moving along someone else's story. I literally felt like I was part of the remnants. Like it was partly my story. I felt joy when I captured an enemy ship, not because of some feeling of winning, but more a feeling of relief, since I felt I desperately needed all the help I could get. WE needed all the help we could get. It was totally immersive because the story made me feel this. This what is lacking with HW3. I genuinely believe there was a time where games used to do this a lot, because of incredible writing. I-war and especially I-war 2, from around the same era. Totally different games, but with the same sense of awe and desperation. So no, it isn't rose tinted lenses looking back at the past. Games for the most part are just worse now, even though obviously graphics have improved by Miles.

So I was listening to your complaints on how the game doesn't seem to require much in the way of tactics and strategy, and started to wonder at what difficulty you played at when you mentioned having played at Medium. That's the problem right there. Medium in this game is effectively Easy mode. Play on Hard if you want to be forced to use more skilled play. I can only imagine they made Medium so easy because of the perception that today's gamer is used to easier games. Seems like an error on their part. So yeah, play on Hard.

Disagree with a lot of this video. I do really hope mods can fix this game but there is a lot wrong with it especially for return homeworld players. Campaign was meh at best, and way to short for the lack of replay value it has. Story was mostly forgettable except for the fact that ending which was just incredible (not in a good way) *spoilers* They confront space Hitler and decide she just needed a friend. Like wtf, maybe if the first mission of the game wasn't 4 hours ago I would've forgotten, but the one of the first cutscenes is you telling us this person killed millions of not billions of people, and now she just needs a friend?? Tf is that?! Balance is horrendous. The game devs seem to even know this and announce it proudly, by having you kill a capital ship with nothing but interceptors on the 2nd mission of the game. Sorry, but wtf. Why are interceptors a threat at all to capital ships? Wtf is even the point if torpedo frigates when my basic interceptor can kill capital ships? And sure the 2 factions that actually exist have equal footing on ship balance, but it just makes no sense to have big ships at all when tiny vessels can threaten them. Gameplay is all just the same repeating loop. Build resource controller press 1 button for it to go get money for you. Then spam out as much of everything as you can and send at the enemy. Rinse and repeat. That's all. There is no point to using cover, there is no point to building specific strike groups that are specialized. Build whatever you want, build as much as you can and send towards enemy. That's the whole gameplay loop for both campaign and skirmish. War games too but the massively reduces resources you get mean you'll always have less ships than you want and have to bum rush objectives and jump away. Maps available in game are way to cramped which is just wild considering it's set in space. Weapon ranges are laughably close, they might as well be using swords and spears instead of rail guns and ion cannons. The ai as stated in the video is dumb af. But worse than that, it even screws up on basic commands like an attack move order, where a handful of ships race off while the rest get into formation to move together. Oh but then 1 enemy interceptor shows up so the whole formation breaks, then takes another 5 minutes trying form back up to continue moving, so long that another enemy shows up and the same shit happens. Gets to the point where you'll literally tell your entire fleet to instead do a guard command on 1 ship and then normal move that ship so they actually fly correctly. I could go on, but do yourself a favor and just stick with the remaster of the original games, they are much better currently than this one. And I really do hope modders can fix this mess.

I dont understand why someone would like to play this game even if it was worth 30 USD, while it costs twice as much. Game is boring, repetitive, and just copycates some nice things from H1 and H2.
