Here are most Deserts of Kharak playable ships with humans next to them to see how big they are :)
Enjoy!
Frequently Asked Questions below:
What programs did you use?
I used Unity studios to extract the models from the game files,then Autodesk FBX Converter to convert the .fbx files into a format that Blender could import.
Are dimensions accurate?
Yes, models were imported without changing the scales ,the length of each ship comes from the Expedition Guide.
Why is the Gaalsien Heavy Railgun not appearing?
I could not find in the game files, despite opening every unit_g* file.
Why are all the ships grey and not Yellow or Red?
The team colors are applied on most of the grey areas, and are only generated by the game.
The exceptions are the Gaalsien Flagship, Rachel's Baserunner and all ships and structures that don't appear in skirmish.
Why do i get motion sickness when the camera is scrolling too fast?
30 FPS, i could have rendered it at 60 but since I'm a lazy motherfucker, I didn't :)

Since you only see them in scale with human beings during the intro cinematic, you forget just how massive some of these vehicles are. They are comparable in size to real life ships. The Sakala is bigger than the "Gerald. R. Ford" carrier (1092 vs 1749).

The modern M1 Abrams, a pretty sizable tank, is about 8m long (chassis, not counting gun) the smallest unit in DOK is the Gaalsien Sandskimmer at 11m long. Stuff in DOK is freakin' huge, Hand of Sajuuk is twice the size of modern supercarriers! But with that size comes a sense of awe and epicness, nothing like watching a 111m-long Vanguard grinding across the landscape, or the 121m Honorgaurd coming about, bringing its gun to bear.

I love the fact that the Homeworld fleet ship size debates can finally, after more than fifteen years, be fully laid to rest. The accurate sizing of these terrestrial vehicles against the Taiidan Saarkin-Cho class carrier wreck gives people the best idea of just how large the ships are. Now, if only the motherships, the Harborship of Bentus and Sajuuk were incorporated (modded, hint hint) in a map you could drive LAVs around just to take in the sights and be in awe at the sizes. Oh man...

Hey, but imagine boarding actions with those beasts. I liked the Homeworld 1 mechanic of capturing ships more than the Kharak. You basically grabbed the enemy ship with tons of small corvettes and towed it towards your FRICKING HUGE mothership to later... well, replace it's crew with yours, repair the damage and install your own hardware. In HW 2 there were marine cruisers that did this a little bit less fancily - they just latched on top of the enemy and filled it to the brim with their troops, who then operated the ship. In kharak it is a bit... well, lacking. I would love to have some sort of boarding craft that would allow you to cripple or even capture enemy ships and carriers.

not necesarily related... especially the interior could be less or more dense... if it is less dense then the pressure to compact it is also less, so it could realistically stay this way.. and the opposite is also true. speaking of density: the density of the Atmosphere also plays a huge role for the feasability of Aircraft. Mars for example has less gravity than Earth, but to fly there you have to move at supersonic speed to generate barely enough lift because of the sparse atmosphere. on Venus the Atmo is more dense, so lower speed than on earth is required, but you should stay away from the Acid Rain that your Aircraft doesnt melt away.. and Titan is Awesome - you can play Icarus and Daedalus there...

Saide from the sheer size of some of the units, absolutely. Coalition units are very much inspired by NATO units and weapons, after all, if we had the sort of environment where these would be feasible, like all flat deserts and plains, we'd probably use them.

Just like how Kiith Khaneeph did, along with stealing and hijacking Gaalsien machines.

I have to wonder if Kharak is actually a low gravity world. Not only would things this huge not move *nearly* so quickly as they do in the game against 1g, they probably wouldn't be able to exist at all without plain crushing themselves. (That's not even getting into something as big as a skyscraper that **hovers** over the desert. Imagine what it would be like to see the Hand of Sajuuk supercarrier crest over some giant dune - plain terrifying. Which is the idea). To get some idea of the scale, some of the largest tracked vehicles on Earth, the giant bucket wheel excavators like the famous Bagger 288 have a maximum speed of 2 to 10 meters *a minute* - and they're a small fraction of the size of the command carriers.

I'm amazed at how the larger command ships even dwarf real aircraft carriers. I know the Queen Elizabeth class isn't as large as some nation's ships, but it gives some jaw-dropping context for these designs. I suppose the larger command carriers in Deserts of Kharak were expected to go extremely long periods of time without resupply so they must have had huge hangars for storing food and water. It would be interesting to know how many crew these vehicles are supposed to have. It just goes to show that those assault vehicles are not just tanks as we know them, no wonder they use naval terminology for their vehicles.

From the wiki the Command carrier had a crew of 1850 people and listed as a power supply of "3.68 MW/U" - homeworld.fandom.com/wiki/Carrier_(Coalition) Compared to a Nimitz carrier with ~6000 crew and a reactor rated for 194 MW at shaft horsepower. Of course the Nimitz has an advantage that it can desalinate water and doesn't need to carry fuel, while the Kharaak carriers have to bring all their fuel and water supplies with them

God damn, talk about massive. Homeworld models always seem much smaller than they are actually supposed to be. It's kinda mindblowing, really, to see how truly large they are. Couldn't help but say 'wait, are you fucking serious?!' Every time you switched from each vehicle type. Thanks for throwing in the other objects in for comparison at the very end too; really puts things into perspective. Helps my mind wrap around the whole thing too.

Imagine the caliber of shells they use for the Armored Assault Vehicles. The barrels are gigantic. The sounds they make in the game doesn't do it justice. Let alone show the absolute power of those guns. The firing alone would shake and blow sand right off it's own hull. Not to mention it's fully automatic, with the reload time of course. Firing that thing for just 3 seconds straight would create a huge dust cloud. Crazy.

The problem with most of the classic and bigger land vehicles is that they will probably sink in the same land they navigate due to their weight. And if course they are so big that a casual hit would probably disable it entirely. I won't express myself on the Gaalsien technology that looks too much exotic to be comprehensible for us. But generally this kind of vehicles would be cool to use in such vast lands like Sahara desert or Siberian tundra. Especially in this last one where conditions are so rough you literally needs to bring with you a mobile base able to reinforce and repair your army. It's a genial idea. If it wasn't for the weight of those vehicles. Of course.

Great vid!! I've only played Homeworld 1 and 2 way back in the day, not this version of the game. I don't think land-based vehicles would ever be able to reach these sizes in real life tho, due to gravity and all the energy needed to move them, but awesome vid nonetheless.

Hi Axatar, great video that helps to showcase all those yummy vehicles that you never really get to see in detail in game! I'm trying to extract the models to study them as i'm trying to learn low-poly real time assets, but after hours of trying, no success. If it isn't any trouble, could you please explain to a total novice how you managed to export fbx files of the units? Ive tried using unity but have no idea what i'm doing or looking for... Much appreciated!
@Axatar
@Axatar 8 жыл бұрын
+Alex Cunningham With Unity studio, open the "resources.assets" in the Data folder of your DOK steam folder. Then look for the unit_* lines, open the arborescence and you'll find LOD0, LOD1 and LOD2 files. The lower the number, the more detailed the models are. Tick LOD0 for example then export. and voila, you have extracted the fbx files with their textures in .dds format :) now, if you use Blender, you'll need to convert them from ASCII to Binary format with Autodesk FBX converter

That base runner size is definitely wrong, it's too tall, which means the rest of them are too large. Look at the opening cinematic. There's just enough head clearance for Rachael who is sat down, certainly not enough for her to stand up. But based off your human figures there's at least five, maybe six meters head room. Using that scale the light attack vehicles would be dune buggy sized which is the sense I got from the game. Still, that aside, it doesn't take away from the artistry of the video which is excellent.
@gracecalis5421
@gracecalis5421 Жыл бұрын
You definitely got the wrong impression from that cutscene. The bottom of the baserunner was towering over Rachel, it wouldn't have hit her regardless of whether she was standing or sitting. Right after that cutscene finishes, you get to see her sitting in the cockpit and the camera cuts to cockpit exterior which is absolutely dwarfed by one of the wheels of the baserunner. The scaling is pretty appropriate.

@toddkes5890
@toddkes5890 3 жыл бұрын
There is a fuel value listed for the carrier, in Ml, likely meaning Megaliters (where 1 Megaliter = just over a quarter million gallons). This could be used by the smaller craft instead of a nuclear reactor, while a hydrogen rich fuel could be burned in a fuel cell to produce water. The carrier has the reactor and cracking equipment (and all other sorts of equipment) to convert water back into hydrogen rich fuel. Plus recycling to recover additional organics. Figure every small vehicle has a sewage tank that gets emptied to a carrier, and water/food tanks that are refilled by the carrier. Without a carrier, the smaller vehicles don't have the necessary range. Edit - I should have clarified it where the carrier would use a smaller onboard reactor for steady demand (base load), while the fuel systems would allow for burst performance. So the carrier is constantly running the reactor to crack water into hydrogen and make the necessary hydrocarbons, while in battle the Fuel Cells are converting those hydrocarbons into water and electricity. So in a longer fight the carrier might actually run out of hydrocarbons. Gaalsian forces would need a larger nuclear reactor to handle their hover systems (Karak can't be too much smaller since oxygen does not escape into space), but those larger reactors would need more special materials. Since the Gaalsian have access to all the wrecks this isn't as big of a problem.
