Prepare to be amused as interior designer Darren Henault takes us back in time as he gives us a tour of the ornate Gilded Age apartment he and his family rent on Fifth Avenue.
The Edward J. Berwind House is a mansion located on the Upper East Side in New York City. It was constructed in 1886 for the coal baron Edward J. Berwind. It served as headquarters for the American Heart Association until 1978 when it was reconverted to residential use with a new penthouse. Enjoy!

@@mg.5968 yes he was very entertaining! He's what I consider as one of the "Fabulous Gays". They are not only very sophisticated but also very fun to be around. I am gay myself and let me tell you there's nothing fabulous about me. I'm boring and my husband is a hillbilly. We are far from fabulous.

Not only Edith Wharton, this house could be in a novel or short story by Louis Auchincloss who was from a generation or two later but who, if my memory is right, in his youth had actually known Edith Wharton.

@@csmtcqueen My pleasure! Louis Auchincloss was from an old, affluent New York family and was either the step-brother or step-cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier whose mother married one the Auchincloss family, a second marriage. For a Gilded Age time frame I highly recommend Louis Auchincloss's novel "The House of Five Talents". He also wrote non-fiction books about such topics as the Vanderbilt family. Trained as a lawyer but an author with a remarkable output of both fiction and non-fiction, much of it about the wealthy and aristocratic and he even wrote a book about legal briefs and could make that topic interesting reading!

Hysterical trim story (and thank you so much for sharing). My husband and I just got a quote for our dining room curtains to have added trim and nearly needed 911 to be called!!! LOL Oh and many wealthy people who had servants living in an area that didn't have windows would put glass in the ceiling and floors to help provide light to those servants.

Picture him and his family watching the Gilded Age in this apartment, knowing how loathed the original owner must have been! Great apartment. It’s funny, I am very much a maximalist, but for me this one - the gilded age touches - is just a little bit too much for me. It’s an amazing part of history and I’m glad someone is keeping it a living museum.

I agree that places like this just seem way over the top - that was what the builders did in the 'Gilded Age' - I love Georgian era stuff, the Gilded Age not so much - 'yuck' is my usual response. It's an amazing apt tho, and he obviously enjoys it all, with a sense of humor about the ridiculousness of so much lavish ornamental trim !
