HOMILY | 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
August 27, 2023
This Holy Mass is celebrated via online and presided by the Rev. Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD (Missionary to SVD-PH Central Province/ SVD Mission - Superior Delagatus and Vocation Promoter) at the Diocesan Shrine of Jesus the Divine Word at Christ the King Mission Seminary, Quezon City.
For FULL REPLAY of the Holy Mass, click here kzbin.info...
-----
The story is told about a teacher who said: “Maria, go to the map and find North America.” Maria obliged, and pointed to North America. The teacher said: “Correct! Now, class who discovered North America?” And the whole class said: “Maria!”
***
In today’s Gospel (Matthew 16: 13 - 20), Jesus asked His disciples: “Who do people say that the Son of man is?” After hearing their answers, He went on to ask: “But who do you say that I am?” Today, the Lord asks each one of us: “Who am I to you? Do we have a personal relationship with each other? Am I important to you?”
***
Beyond what people say and what our religious affiliations and traditions say, beyond our debates and religious practices as Christians, what matters most is our personal knowledge and commitment to the person and mission of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
***
All too often, many of us are so focused on our financial, career, and fame journey. How about our personal journey to God’s heart? How about our mission for Him? How about our personal relationship and our commitment to Him? When we finally come face to face with Him, may we be able to humbly say to Him: “Lord, mission accomplished.”
***
One of the first things that we learned in our catechism regarding our purpose in life is to know God, to love Him, and to serve Him. Go back and make sure that you are on this road. Recalculate your route, and stay on this journey, your most important journey.
***
Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople has gone home to the Father at the age of 61. Mission well accomplished! She was one person who made a choice to spend the rest of her life, the best of her life. She chose to serve the Filipino people, foregoing personal comfort and wealth because of her promise (“pangako”) to continue the legacy of her father Blas Ople, and because of her mission (“misyon”) to serve her Loving Father by being a public servant of the Filipino Migrant Workers.
***
We have good public servants who are not politicians, and we have many politicians who are not public servants at all! What’s the point? The point is that we must live for something or someone greater that ourselves. Secretary Susan Ople reminds us by her life and death that life is not just about making money, or making a name. It is about making a difference.
***
A priest cousin Fr. Roberto Mejia of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan was a very simple priest who lived a life that made a difference. He was focused on serving his flock till the very end, spending most of his life hearing confessions, ministering to the sick, giving spiritual talks and advises, and lots of time praying. He had no car and used the public transport, he never traveled abroad, and he didn’t have a cellphone. Thank you Insan for reminding us of what is important in this life, and what really matters in the end.
***
Ask yourself today: How is my journey to God’s heart? Am I closer to God now? Am I a better person now? Remember, our journey in life is not so much about going far and fast. It is about journeying to the heart - to God’s heart, to other people’s heart, and to our very own heart.
***
Inviting you to our First Friday 10:00AM online Mass via KZbin and Facebook (frjerryorbossvd) and to our First Saturday 9:00AM Mass at the Sanctuary of the Divine Word (back of the Christ the King Mission Seminary, E. Rodriguez, QC)
***
A Moment with the Lord:
Lord, remind us that our most important journey in life is our journey to the heart- to Your heart, other people’s heart and to our very own heart. Amen

For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood. This sacrifice shows that God was being fair when he held back and did not punish those who sinned in times past, for he was looking ahead and including them in what he would do in this present time. God did this to demonstrate his righteousness, for he himself is fair and just, and he makes sinners right in his sight when they believe in Jesus. Romans 3:23‭-‬26

Thank you, Fr. Jerry, for the very meaningful homily. It’s my prayer that I will be able to experience God more in my journey. As a cancer warrior myself, I decided to work again as a nurse assigned in field work not only because I can buy my pricey supplements but because I want to serve God in my own little way thru the people I work with and the patients who go to our Health Center. It hasn’t been an easy journey. There were times when I didn’t feel like working and my body would demand a longer rest. But God knows me and my thoughts, so I’m not giving up. This is all for Him. By God’s Grace, it’s been 2 1/2 years that I’ve survived my Stage 4 Pancreatic Cancer and 1 1/2 years of working for the Lord. And I’m happy that I feel Him everyday as I walk through the journey of LIFE!

Hi Father, I hope you consider putting your past homilies on Spotify, where it could serve as a podcast. I am in my late twenties and I find myself more and more buried in work and sometimes, the only quiet time I have is the drive back home from work. I would like to hear God's wisdom and presence in that short time, where I could reflect on what had happened that day and how I could be better. Of course, I am aware that going to mass is a different and sacred thing but your homilies provide me with comfort after a long day. I hope this could become a consideration in bridging the gap between young people and the Church. Nevertheless, thank you once again for such a heart-filled homily. Thank you for guiding me in my own journey to God's heart.

The parents of the prophets, the priests, and the kings have an important message for us today. For example: The prophets: Elijah (my elohim is YAH), Isaiah (salvation of YAH), Jeremiah (YAH will raise up), Obadiah (servant of YAH), etc. The kings: Abijah (YAH is my father), Amaziah (who YAH strengthens), Hezekiah (YAH has strengthened), Pekahiah (YAH has opened), etc. The priests: Shelemiah (peace of YAH), Uriah (YAH is light), Zephaniah (YAH has reassured), Yahoshuah (salvation of YAH), etc. Not only that, but Moses prophesied the name of the coming Messiah in Numbers 13:16. The King James Version has “Jehoshua” - Yahoshuah (Yahweh salvation) at Numbers 13:16 for the Hebrew name but everywhere else it shortens this same name to “Joshua” for the very same Hebrew word for no good reason except for the fact that when the translators went from Hebrew to Greek the Greek declensions drop “Yah” completely and produces the misnomers Yesu, Yesun, and Yesus. As a result we are given the misnomer “Jesus” in the English Bibles. This misnomer has no resemblance to its original birth certificate in Numbers 13:16 and has become in its own right a sacred cow to many people. But the truth is that if you were to take the name “Washington” and transliterate it in the same way you would result in the name “Vestus.” If you were to go back in time and ask to meet President Vestus. They would not know of whom you were talking. Likewise, if you were to go back in time and tell the disciples that you want to talk to “Jesus” they would not have any idea of whom you were speaking. Jeremiah warned us that the pen of the scribes is vain (Jeremiah 8:8). Nevertheless, the Father Creator, Father of spirits Himself put the “Yah” back into everyone's mouth. No matter what nation, or what language, or what culture people say “Hallel-lu-Yah.” (Praise ye Yah). This saying is not itself a praise. Rather, it is a commandment to “praise Yah.” Everyone is commanding each other all around the world to praise Yah but they don't understand what they are saying. The word is nigh thee, even in your mouth (Deuteronomy 30:14; Romans 10:8). It is time for the church to repent and put the “Yah” back in the Messiah's name where it belongs. This name is not just for the Jews. Paul declares, "Praise Yahweh all you Gentiles..." (Romans 25:11, Psalm 117:1). If "Yah" is not in it, then it is not the full Gospel. ... ... ...

In the tridentine mass you don’t even talk to your seat mates, no showing of the sign of peace because your focus is the Lord. The Lord is asking only one to two hours of the week just to devote to him and him alone. He is so possessive of his time that you should spend it with him without distractions. This is why I appreciated the tridentine or Latin mass. Is this not what the first commandment demands us to love God first. You can show your love to your neighbor after the mass but this two hour worship should be devoted to God. The second Vatican council has ruined this true essence of the mass. Mark 12:17 Jesus said give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and give to God what belongs to God. Give your 2 hours to God wholeheartedly and put him first in every relationship you created to one another.
