This sort of censorship is so stupid even beyond the obvious horrific motivations. For one anyone watching this show in China would be pretty quick to notice the massive edits and ironically they don't even do much to alter the content. If you watched that scene with Maddie it'd still imply they were in bed together, if anything it makes it feel even more like a one night stand given that after they've finished they're not even next to each other and show no physical affection. The cut from the sex scene is such that you almost have to assume that they're still going to fuck because the tone and line delivery. The cut actually makes it so that people have to imagine the resulting scene allowing for a lot more to happen.

this is unironically really sad. i know that lots of people have complained about the sex scene (that it was egregious, out of place/character narratively, etc.) and while i don't dismiss these criticisms, i think we also just need to take a step back and celebrate it for what it is. genuine LGBT representation is still such a rarity. it's censored and criminalised in so many countries. and yet the writers not only gave us a heavily queercoded relationship between cait and vi in s1 (which was in itself still better representation than most media give us), but they actually doubled down and made them very explicitly the ENDGAME couple without any room for doubt in s2. that is such a ballsy move and i have so much respect for what was undoubtedly an absolute war waged behind the scenes for people to have made this canon. i wouldn't even be surprised if this may have contributed to the show feeling so condensed and only being two seasons - making not only a gay couple but specifically a wlw couple endgame was a risky move (and we can clearly see the consequences of that in this very video). it's entirely possible that the compromise with the execs was to take that risk, but make arcane s2 self-contained and final so that they wouldn't have to risk failing to greenlight a third season and discontinuing the show due to how controversial the queer representation is. this is completely speculative on my part, but the lengths that people will go to in order to exclude queer narratives - to the point of shoddy editing and nonsensical storytelling as we see here - really reinforces just how unprecedented and how IMPORTANT representation like this really is. this is why i think that the sex scene (and the whole of caitvi's relationship by extension) was genuinely wonderful. because of what it represents. not only that, but the sex scene was clearly animated and choreographed with so much thought and care. people tend to shy away from lesbian sex because it is so hypersexualised (and often fetishised, which we can see by the very male gaze-y way many lesbian sex scenes tend to be depicted) - so when lesbian sex is not just alluded to but actually SHOWN, people often label it as excessive, or pornographic. yet, from my perspective (as a wlw), this scene was steamy, yes, but also a very critical turning point in their relationship, as it is - essentially - a declaration of love and forgiveness, and of them letting go of the past to choose one another. and you can feel that love and devotion in the way they interact with each other throughout this whole sequence; it's honestly very sweet. it's also not particularly out of the blue either - vi and cait's relationship has always had a degree of physical intimacy and sexuality (they have had very clear physical and sexual tension since s1 with the cheek touching and flirting, the sexual undertones of the whole brothel sequence, the intimate physicality of their conversation on cait’s bed in s1, and of course jinx taunting vi in their early s2 conflict about whether or not cait and vi have had sex before one of them dies, etc.). this is very much not unprecedented, and them finally coming together like this represents the culmination of all this tension and is symbolic of them finally understanding one another and accepting each other, literally stripped bare and completely vulnerable. i absolutely think there's room for criticism. i have plenty of my own - vi and cait are narratively the symbolheads of zaun and piltover ("oil and water"). their union is also supposed to represent the coming together of these two nations, and the fact that there isn't a very concrete resolution to this conflict somewhat weakens their relationship, in my opinion (can't solve classism in two seasons, i guess). there are other critiques out there that i won't get into now. i think many of these things are valid, and while arcane is an incredible show, it's not exempt from being somewhat flawed. but as we know, there is beauty in imperfection. and similarly, i think that cait and vi's relationship is a really beautiful thing and is ultimately something utterly groundbreaking to be celebrated. arcane is laying the groundwork for shows in the future to do even better. so - in defiance of censorship like this, and in defiance of a culture that skews towards the negative, where criticisms are prioritised over praise - let's be proud of the arcane team for what they've accomplished here. this is something truly wonderful.

Visited my dad in China, for some reason True Blood was on the English channel and he'd already seen a few episodes. My state passed legislation just this year that said any MENTION of an LGBTQ+ person meant any book was subject to ban without review or appeal (banned to anyone under 18, even if it's a picture book that has one picture of a man putting his hand on the shoulder of another man to comfort him).
