Upgrade to a touch screen on my wife's 2012 Accord. How I did it. The unit is sold by RongNan International and shipped by Amazon. In my opinion, upgrading an older car to an Android touch screen with CarPlay, AA, NAV, hands free phone, etc. is a game changer, especially for long trips. There are two types of kits for the 8th gen Accords. One package completely replaces the OEM radio. The disadvantage to that setup is loss of a pretty good AM/FM radio (SiriusXM on some units) and the CD player (which my wife still uses). The other type of install is what Biorunn sells. It involves moving a small LCD info screen down below into a storage compartment space and adds the touch screen up top. This way the OEM radio remains in the car, intact, and is still functional - best of both worlds in my opinion.
This step is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: I set up the new unit on a bench to test it before I installed it. I used an old PC power supply - the yellow rail is 12V, the black rail is ground, and the red rail is 5V. The power cable for the head unit uses the same color wires. I connected the yellow wire to 12V (constant), the black wire to ground, and the red ACC wire to switched 12V. As soon as I turned on the PC power supply, it started right up and I was able to test the basic functionality (Bluetooth, CarPlay, music, NAV, and video. It all worked flawlessly. At this point I felt confident installing it in my wife’s 2012 Accord.
The theory of this installation is not all that complex, but to have success, a well thought out plan of execution is necessary. There are several videos that show various people doing this install. I found all of them to be only partially helpful. Most left out the final steps of the installation.
First I popped out the little plug on the shifter housing (auto trans) which exposes a slot which when depressed unlocks the shifter so it can be moved. Don’t forget to engage the parking brake when you do this. I used plastic trim tools to remove the center console insert and dash board trim pieces. I then unscrewed and removed the storage cubby after which I unscrewed four screws and popped out the OEM radio. At this point you’re ready to move the small LCD screen down to the storage (cubby) space below. This requires completely removing it from its original housing and transferring it to the new housing which is provided in the kit. The storage cubby is not reused. I also bought a double USB socket and put it in the new housing for the LCD screen. That way it would be easier and look cleaner when connecting a USB device (instead of USB dangling in the glove box).
Next was figuring out if the cables provided are the correct ones for your OEM radio. In this setup the new touch screen head unit is providing pre-amp power to the OEM radio through its AUX input. The main amp and speaker output is still provided by the OEM radio. The main power cable (usually orange or gray wires) fits and works. There’s also an extension cable that connects to the LCD screen which is now down below. The AUX cable is another matter. If your OEM radio has a certain type of AUX connector on back then the smaller gray wire harness with two RCA connectors provided will work. If not (mine wasn’t) you have to go to plan B which meant running the long 1/8th to RCA cable from the rear of the center console up to the new head unit. These Accords have a 1/8th audio IN jack and a USB audio plug at the rear of the console. To make a clean installation, I had to remove the complete center console (not just the insert). There’s a little cover at the back of it which when popped off exposes the OEM AUX wiring and screws. I took it into my workshop and drilled a small hole to access the 1/8th plug from below. I then followed some OEM wiring back up to the front. I also had a rear view (backup) camera and ran its long (yellow) RCA video cable up to the front at the same time. I was then able to reinstall the center console outer shell, but not the inner insert yet. The kit came with a small half shell cover which screwed onto the back of the new head unit (5 screws). At this point I transferred two metal clips from the OEM small LCD screen housing to that back cover. Before I put the OEM radio back in, I connected a reverse video trigger wire, the two RCA plugs (audio OUT L and audio OUT R) which go to the long AUX IN cable under the console. There’s also a GPS antenna, two USB cables, a WIFI antenna cable for 2.4 HZ signal, and a FM antenna (NOT included) which I purchased separately. I then put the GPS and FM antennas all the way forward into the cavity and taped them to plastic heater ducts. I connected the main power plug. I then re-installed the OEM radio (four screws) and dash molding. Next I connected the extension cable to the small LCD screen and the USB cables to the socket. I installed the touch screen by lining it up in its slots and pushing it in. When I started the car the new touch screen came to life & works.

NOTE: The premium OEM Honda radios have an anti-theft device that locks out the OEM radio if it's been disconnected. To get the unit functioning again requires entering a 4 or 5 digit code which can usually be found on a sticker in the glove box or owner documentation. Pushing the volume/power button for 2 seconds will pull up the screen to enter the code. If your code has been lost you can retrieve it from the Honda code website (google search - can't post it here). The base radios don't require a code. Thanks @DiamondScuff for this info

Do you think the 2012 Honda accord SE got premium radio ? Which is exactly like you car radio push bottons , other option buttoms are same. The original radio in my car is not disconnected since still I can play FM from original unit by selecting first button for FM then AM.

@Dan Molina; How is your touch screen working out? I finally got the 10" touch screen connected to 4G and when I plugged in my iPhone with a cable it connected to Car Play. Both work simultaneously. It's pretty cool. 4G has been a real saga for me. I tried several SIM cards without luck. They would populate the settings but no connection - no bars or DATA. I tried playing with different suggested APN settings etc. -still no joy. I finally picked up a Speed Talk Mobile SIM on special through AARP - $15. I also bought a new 4G antenna from Amazon ($5) on the chance the provided antenna was defective. I installed both (new antenna and SIM from Speed Talk). STILL NO JOY! We recently took a long trip where I connected the unit through my iPhone hotspot which worked beautifully. BTW, overall the unit performed well on our trip. About 1/3 of the way on our trip I happened to glance at the screen and noticed we had bars and 4G. WHAT? Are you kidding me? After all this I finally have 4G data away from my home state? The 4G connection stayed fairly consistent while traveling through several states. I don't know what will happen when we return home, but for now Speed Talk Mobile DATA SIM works in our unit. When I had a chance I did a deep dive into the SIM and mobile DATA settings. Everything was on the T-Mobile network which makes sense because that is what STM uses. The mystery for me is that the first SIM I tried was out of my cell phone which is also on T-Mobile, but no joy with the phone SIM. If you want 4G -LTE I can report that for $15 I would try STM and see if it works with your unit - it works for us. This unit is very good and I'm raising my rating from 4 to 5 stars.

@@PHubbalright, so I need the fm antenna to get radio stations through the head unit.. also I watched the other video you sent me the link to but I didn’t understand where you plugged in the 4g antenna you also linked me from Amazon. Does that go where the gps antenna went too? The last thing how did you connect the SIM card too the radio, do you have to use a device that reads the sim, your basically paying a service line for the head unit? I apologize for asking, I’m just very inexperienced with this. And greatly appreciate your help

@@TR1CKSHOTS31 There are connections on the back of the unit for all of this - radio antenna, 4G antenna, GPS antenna, and the SIM card slot. If you look at 32 through 50 seconds at the beginning of the video you'll see pictures of these connections. I bought a $5 FM antenna from Amazon but it was inadequate - not good reception. I discovered a better way to do the FM radio antenna by tapping into the Accord OEM FM antenna. The Honda OEM radio antennas are built into the rear window defogger wires and incorporate a signal booster amplifier. I bought a standard radio antenna splitter cable, and a Honda antenna cable adapter and connected them. Here are links to the antenna cables: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TV1QT1F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and www.ebay.com/itm/191075283707 I'm going to make a short video about connecting to Accord OEM antenna system. The 4G setup requires a data SIM card on a cellular network. It's a paid service similar to your cell phone. The 4G antenna screws in next to the GPS antenna. Paul

@PHibb- its awesome job and very good lengthy video. My car is 2012 Honda Accord. I installed Andriod radio recently, got issue with the steering wheel controls not working while playing FM from Original OEM and Bluetooth audio from New Android head. When I select Vol+,Vol- and Next song, pre song- nothing happens on Original Radio and New radio. I can lower or up the volume using centeral round controller on Original Radio. Do you have any idea and suggest what am I missed? Also as I saw in few videos that I got one extension harness cord with 2 RCA pins for audio, those connect to New radio head and after connects to Original Radio. But my car doesn’t have the existing harness cable and port on old radio to attach. Is that causing issue?

Great video instructions! It really helped with my install. Wondering if you can offer some expertise on getting the Honda logo to appear at start up. Currently, I have a black screen for a few second before the main screen appears. I'd like the Honda logo to appear in those few seconds. Jane at RongNan provided me the logo file and I got it uploaded to the head unit, but the Honda logo only appears with a Reboot (replacing the Andriod logo). I don't think Jane understand (language miscommunication) what I'm trying to accomplish. I'm guessing there are some configuration settings, but I thought I read you had accomplished the Honda logo start up. Thanks for your contributions! Unbelievable you would offer such detailed instructions. You are/must have been a teacher or instructor!

Hello; The Car Play USB port from the head unit charges a phone. What I was doing before I got 4G fixed was to tether the head unit off my iPhone personal hotspot. I then used a USB lightening cable (plugged in) connection for Car Play. That way the head unit still had a connection from my iPhone personal hotspot. Using the cable connection for Car Play also solved the problem of wireless Car Play draining my iPhone battery. This is a known issue with wireless Car Play. Wireless Cap Play is very convenient for short trips - no fumbling with a cable just to run across town, but on a long trip the iPhone battery will run down if not plugged in. FYI, I'm not sure the USB at the back of the console has charging capability, although it does provide power to a USB flash drive so maybe it does. BUT crucially it has special wiring which goes to a little controller box with IC under the console for song/folder access and song name display on the little LCD screen - it's all integrated. Using that USB port with an iPhone is read as an iPod for music play, nothing else. Using wired Car Play from the head unit has kept my phone charged. I also bought a two pack of power socket chargers - Cynemo Fast Car Chargers (Amazon) - which work well. No need to waste the two power sockets built into the Accords. There's a setting (I forget where now) called USB startup. The choices are none and Carlink. If you set it to Carlink, Car Play will start immediately and automatically once you plug in the iPhone. If you have a problem with wired Car Play, try the other USB port. Only one of them works for Car Play. I hope this helps.

Hi Michael; I've seen a couple of people having electrical noise with similar units. Did you have to connect the sound to the AUX IN jack at the rear of the console? I did. My unit wouldn't take the short cable with RCA outs that plugs into the back of of OEM radio. I had to use the long 1/8th to RCA cable. When I first went to install it I discovered that the provided cable was defective - one RCA connector wouldn't connect and it wasn't long enough. I had to purchase a new cable (which Jane @ RongNan reimbursed me for). I wonder if a defective cable is the source of your problem? The other people with noise (static) have found a loose connection (particularly ground) was the source of static. Another area to check is the AUX IN jack at the rear of the console. Make sure the AUX jack is clean and the cable is making a good connection. I cleaned mine with some spray electrical cleaner. This head unit has been very good for us, but as I stated in my review, the install kit was lacking quality parts.

Some off brand cables don't do CarPlay very well - it's a known issue. 2: You can't connect your iPhone to both bluetooth and CarPlay at the same time - doesn't work. Only one iPhone can run CarPlay at a time. CarPlay needs to control all of the phone functions - bluetooth phone interferes. 3: But a second iPhone can connect to bluetooth

Thank you @Phubb. I tried using carplay on blurtooth connection, but sometimes mid of the way the carplay is getting hang and cannot drive with it and maps on mobile still connects to carplay and doesn’t show maps on mobile. Thats why I am trying to connect on using USB cable. The issues is I have Iphone 15 which got USB C cords on both sides but the Biorunn stereo got USB female cord to connect to mobile. Thats why I am using USB Male to connect stereo to USB C cable to Iphone 15 whiich is not from Apple brand.

Where did you hide the mic going into the head unit?
@PHubb
@PHubb Жыл бұрын
There are two microphones. The one built into the top left front of the touch screen works very well for answering phone calls and speaking commands like 'Hey Google" The secondary MIC plugs into the rear of the unit and I didn't hook it up because the front one works very well. I suggest using the front built in MIC There's a setting to switch between front and rear MICs. Go to Settings> Factory> pass: 3368> Back MIC switch. Turn it off and front MIC will work

Does the canbus for setup work for air conditioner and other things
@PHubb

@@potatosmasher5591 Hello; What year Accord do you have and do you have dual auto heat/AC? The 8th gen Accords generally don't have an actual CAN bus. There are several CANBUS in the settings for 8th gen Accord - HiWorld, BNR, Raise, for 8th gen Accords. Try setting one and see if it works. I set a BNR CANBUS for mine (NO dual auto heat/AC) and all I got out of it was volume up/down steering wheel controls on both the head unit and the car stereo small LCD screen. Good luck - let us know

Only one USB port works for Apple Car Play. Check settings first. Go to Settings> Device> USB Device Start and select Carlink. Plug iPhone into a USB port and launch Carlink app - it should connect to the iPhone, then ask if you want to use wireless CarPlay or wired CarPlay. Choose your preference.

@@PHubb i figured it out, so my connection was fine, it turns out my car has a radio theft code, so when j set everything up i couldnt make the oem radio turn to aux. it was stuck on like a dead mode till i plugged the radio code in then turned it to aux and all worked well, thanks for the fast reply though

@@DiamondScuff Great job Diamond. Only the premium stereos have the anti-theft code system. Ours is just the base unit so I didn't have to mess with a code, but it's good to know about the code for others who might have a similar problem. thanks

Hi David; No not for functioning. This is my wife's car so I installed the USB cables with the bracket/socket for easier access and a cleaner look. Many people just dangle the USB wires inside the glove box.

This touch screen connects and provides pre-amp audio to the OEM radio/CD player/speakers. Sound is output from the OEM unit. The touch screen does come with a built in DSP (digital signal processor) in the form of a 16 band EQ as well as spatial processing of audio output. The DSP works well but the final audio is ultimately going to be what the OEM radio/CD player/speakers output. Our car has the base radio (1 CD player) in it. The premium sound package has a 6 CD changer with a separate amp, XM satellite radio and 10 speakers so your mileage will vary depending on what the OEM system in your car is.

@@DaySleep809, @eric.m, I am not aware of this being an issue BUT my first question is how have you connected your AUX input? I had to use the 1/8th AUX jack input at the back of the console and run the long RCA cable up front. If you connected your AUX to the back of the OEM stereo that might be the source of it switching inputs randomly. I'd try the AUX jack at the back of the console and make sure the jack and plug are clean. I'm interested in how you fix this so let us know

I thought the same when I first got this unit and installed it but it's not been a problem for me. If you watch the video @ 18:30 forward I explain how to attach the back cover and transfer the metal clips from the old LCD housing to the new back cover. Once the clips are installed the unit pops into place and is secure.
