Brilliant effort of make a tool not be a tool! Well done Nat! Getting it there & sorting out the engine/gearbox. I’m starting to think the shifter detent linked to the shift drum internally is buggered. Absolutely agree, zip lock bags are great for parts & also absolutely fantastic to use as grease packing bearings bags. Fill the bag with enough grease, throw the bearing in, lock the bag & squish the grease in without getting your hands dirty. Then, use the bag to jiggle the bearings in place. Greaseless hands.

Sometimes you will find the thread on the rotor will be the same as a wheel spindle.Worth a try.All the best.

I sometimes pick up a few old rusty sockets from boot fairs to make special tools. Choose an appropriate socket and notch the end with an angle grinder, bingo, special tool, and you can use your normal extensions or even rattle guns on the end. Yours worked so all was good 👍

Freezer bags help a lot. But takeaway food tubs are also useful

Hi Nat, not 100% sure but i was told the oil filter bolt can be used to extract the Stator.

In the past, I've sacrificed an impact socket, by grinding the end to make that kind of a 4-dog wrench. It has the advantage that you can use standard 1/2" square drive tools on it, including a torque wrench for re-tightening. In my case, it made commercial sense, too, cheaper to buy a replacement socket than hold up the job trying to source the special tool. As for the rotor extraction, on my GS550, the book suggests using the swinging arm pivot bolt (same thread) and a large socket as a slide hammer. Don't know if something similar would work for that.

Nat . Do you think it's ok to use a rattle gun on the flywheel extractor bolt rather than hammering it against the crank . I have seen people hitting the end of the bolt hard . Surely bad for the crank bearings etc . I have used the gun on many really tight bolts on my Honda and it seems really effective . Thanks .

It's the way forward if you possess one.
