Hey Pete: on those chains, a quick check of pin and side plate wear is to twist the chain sideways by holding each end. If you take a new chain and a used chain and bend them sideways, you will see exactly the amount of wear. This is an old millwright trick. Try it and you will see what I mean. The new chain will bend sideways very little and the used chain that looks good will reveal precisely the amount of wear. Great videos! Rebuilding an engine right now and using your videos as a guide.

Splendid! I guess the time you spent just uploading this movies are considerate. My hat of for you Sir Pizza. I just started to rebuild a CBX. 13.36 in you say that the oil goes into the alternator. I dont have the alternator, thats the missing part unfortunatly. So when I start the engine just for the sound it squirts oil out from the axle spinning the (what i think) alternator clutch. I cant se any oilseals in the manual either. Do you have any movie of when you rebuild that axle, so I can see what holding the oil back in the engine?

What I was thinking was, it might not be good for somebody to just grab any O-ring that fit out of any kit, or basket. ( Viton; Buna-N; Nitriel ). Thank you for being there!!!

Hi Mark, I agree with you in most cases. In this case, the O rings for this application are standard O rings. Also, I have extra Honda O rings from multiple Honda CBX gasket sets from past projects, so chances are that these O rings that I used were actually the correct ones LOL

Hi Pete, Thanks for such great content, your step by step approach is really informative. I haven’t rebuild anything as complex as this, just single and twin cylinders motorcycles, but the detail of your description has given me so much insight , which has helped so much. Are the shop manuals for each motorcycle including parts manuals available for anyone to purchase, or are they trade only? I can see how helpful having access to the information incredibly helpful! Keep the great videos coming my friend All the best Andy

Hi Andy, Thank you :) The manuals can be found pretty regularly on eBay. I have a number of various manuals available that I do not use for various bikes that I might be in the market to sell. let me know if there are any specific ones you need and I can check to see if I have it. I mostly only have Honda and few Yamaha from the 70s & 80s.

Pete, to clarify, the parts you mention at 12:14 that isn’t shown in the parts or shop manual is the primary chain tensioner oil feed shown on page 12-19 of the shop manual. The sleeve with the pipe feeding the chain tensioner slips over that screen.

Right, the hole feeds through the protective screen to the primary chain tensioner spring assembly. These oiling systems are highly efficient if kept clean!

Did you have to measure the crank with those squash tabs, like you have to on the 400/4? Iv seen it in a magazine article and it looks a nightmare. BTW I use stp oil treatment neat for assembly lube, works great and is a lot cheaper.
@digitalpizza1

I only measured the journals on the crank to make sure they were within the specs that the shop manual listed. The journals were in such great condition, and the bearings looked like new, that I am assuming that there are no issues with the crank specs. It might be lazy on my part, but I don't think I have ever come across a Honda that had crankshaft issues. :)

Hi, greetings from Costa Rica. Your job is so much appreciated and helpful!!!!! I am in the process of restoring 1 cbx1000 and also building another motor. I have a question: any suggestion where to find tensioners and guides?? I need 14510-422-010 (Tensioner A) also 14520-422-000 (Guide A, Cam Chain) and 14530-422-000 (Tensioner B). I am a little worried about availability of those parts. Thanks and God Bless.

On the gasket sets.... Top end kits are always 'A kits', Bottom end kits are always 'B kits'

I’m still very much a beginner and learning, but I remember WWWAYYY back in the day, my father buying raw stock of gasket material and MAKING his own gaskets by tracing them out (at least with the non-metal gaskets, such as valve covers ON CARS)... Do people ever still do that?
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can actually buy gasket material in most auto parts stores.

I'm really enjoying the series Peter, I'm making notes as I go to add as comment so please forgive me. I was wondering if you have any rules around bearing replacement, I think I noticed that the gearbox bearings were still in place ? Should I be replacing them as a matter of course like you doing with the chains will I have the engine apart ? Or should I just test them for wear / feel ? What's you view on this ?
@digitalpizza1
@digitalpizza1 3 жыл бұрын
My opinion on the bearings is that they are extremely well made and unless they are rusty or have some obvious wear, they are probably good to go. Of course you can easily replace them if you are more comfortable doing so.

They have some, and not others. It’s easier and cheaper to get the set. I have had good luck with either of the 2 sets I mentioned in the video. The Honda sets are no longer available.

Hi Llew The head gasket with the Honda logo on it is a genuine Honda head gasket. I was just comparing it to the Chinese gasket.
