THE HONDA CITY WAS FIRST RELEASED IN 1981 AS THE SMALLEST NON-KEI CAR IN THE BRANDS LINE-UP. ALTHOUGH IT WAS AVAILABLE IN NON-TURBO, WORK-VAN, AND CABRIOLET VERSIONS, THE CREAM OF THE CROP WAS THE REFRESHED TURBO II MODEL THAT DEBUTED WITH WIDE FENDERS, PERIOD GRAPHICS, BODY COLORED BUMPERS, AND A LOUVER AHEAD OF THE REAR WHEEL. A DIGITAL DASH COMPLETED THE EIGHTIES OUTRUN AESTHETIC, LOOKING LIKE A VEHICLE STRAIGHT OUT OF AKIRA. BUILDING ON THE ENGINE OF THE EARLIER CITY TURBO, THE II MODEL ADDED AN INTERCOOLER, A REVISED INTAKE PLENUM, A SLIGHTLY LARGER THROTTLE BODY, A MODIFIED INLET MANIFOLD, A HIGHER AR TURBO COMPRESSOR, EXHAUST HOUSINGS, AND A SLIGHTLY RAISED (7.6:1) COMPRESSION RATIO. WITH 108 HP ON TAP, THIS LITTLE WARM HATCH IS A BLAST TO DRIVE.
NIPPON IMPORTS IMPORTED THIS 1984 MODEL AND DIVED RIGHT INTO PERIOD CORRECT MODIFICATIONS. THE 14” VOLK ARTISAN SPIRIT WHEELS WITH ACCOMPANYING 84C AERO COVERS ARE THE STAR OF THE SHOW, ADDING TO THE CAR’S BULLDOG STANCE. THE WHEELS WERE SOURCED AND RESTORED BY JOSH, INCLUDING HAND-PAINTING THE ORIGINAL RED GRAPHICS. OTHER THAN PAINT REFRESHENING, THE REST OF THE CAR HAS BEEN KEPT OEM-FRESH, AND FRANKLY THE CAR HAS SO MUCH SOUL FROM THE FACTORY, THERE’S NOT MUCH REASON TO MESS WITH IT.
THE ACCOMPANYING MOTOCOMPO REALLY DESERVES EQUAL BILLING WITH THE CITY ITSELF. DESIGNED AS A TRUNK BIKE, THE SCOOTER FITS PERFECTLY BEHIND THE REAR SEAT OF THE CITY. A 2.5HP 49CC TWO-STROKE SENDS POWER THROUGH A SINGLE-SPEED AUTOMATIC CLUTCH. WITH THE BRIGHT RED PAINT AND THE EIGHTIES STYLIZED LOGO, THE SYNERGY OF CAR AND BIKE MAKES THIS PAIR THE PERFECT CARS AND COFFEE SHOW-OFF SET. IN JAPAN, THE PAIR WERE MARKETED USING COMMERCIALS FEATURING THE BRITISH SKA BAND MADNESS. HONESTLY, THE NOSTALGIA WAVE IS ALMOST TOO MUCH TO HANDLE. FOR THOSE THAT FIND AMERICAN HONDA A LITTLE TOO BLAND, THE CITY TURBO II IS A GREAT ARGUMENT FOR CREATIVITY AND EXCITEMENT FROM A TRADITIONALLY CONSERVATIVE BRAND. ALTHOUGH THE TYPE R BRANDING WOULDN’T COME TIL 10 YEARS AFTER THE CITY WAS RELEASED, THE TURBO II REALLY REPRESENTED THE PASSION PUT INTO THE LATER RED-BADGE CARS. ALONG WITH THE GROUP B INSPIRED BODY WORK, IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT THE CITY HAS ROCKETED TO THE TOP OF HONDA ENTHUSIASTS’ LIST. WHOEVER WINS THIS ONE IS GONNA BE A LUCKY, LUCKY OWNER.
