Between the Honda City, Nissan Almera, and Geely Emgrand in the Philippines, who will come out on top? Among these subcompact sedans in the country, which one is the best value for money? All of the models come with frugal engines and CVTs, but the Almera's the only turbocharged option among the three. Does it stand a chance? Or will the Honda come out on top like it usually does? Or perhaps the Geely Emgrand will rip open a new slot in the running for best subcompact. Find out in this Comparo between the City, Almera, and Emgrand.

@@jannogives1981 my guess is, if you have no plans in replacing your car after 5 years, get the Vios. Currently has more parts and more reliable. But if you are planning to change your car every 5 years, get the emgrand. But still, the vios is the better choice as it resells at higher cost than Geely. Geely is still a new player and especially the emgrand. So it’s hard to know what problems might come up in the future.

I'm a new driver and we just acquired our Emgrand Comfort a few months ago as of this writing. I did notice the points that you mentioned during your Hill Challenge when I drove our car around our area with slight inclines and curved roads, and it does feel underpowered, but the comfort inside the car is the selling point for me. Loved the control of the car and how big the space inside is.

Thank you for this review... I am torn between City and Emgrand actually. But that hill drive test, safety, and the fuel consumption comparison, those are the most important factors for me. I experienced driving the old Almera in Baguio and in some point it lacks the power to move uphill. And that scared me since I have my family with me. I think I'll go for the most balanced of these three... It's the City for me. :)

Honda City is overall winner for me. Tried and tested engine that equates to performance and durability. After all cars are meant to be driven always, therefore we need a reliable partner on the road. Not to mention few good dealerships for after sales service, good numbers of available fast moving parts and much more. But thanks to Geely Emgrand, I believe few years from now most Japanese and Korean automakers will catch up with the features that Chinese automakers are offering with the price range. Nissan Almera is what I call the most improved sedan in its segment.

I'd go for the City simply because of reliability. Geely's are very attractive on their features and price points but reliability and longevity questions still remain unanswered. Not to mention the parts availability. Only time can tell. As for the Almera, it is not really a bad choice but as a Navara owner, Nissan probably has the WORST service, plus Nissan parts are overpriced as well as their PMS.
@Tatay-Mong-Kalbo

I own a Navara and A Honda BR-V and I would say that in terms of parts and services, they are pretty much the same. I wonder why you seem to have a bad experience with Nissan's service(?). I would agree that Honda's service is better but I would argue that Nissan's is not that bad in comparison. In terms of PMS, it usually depends on which dealership you go to and you can always revise the PMS quotation based on what you think is essential and necessary. I expected more from Geely, probably because of the hype and sales of the Coolray and that they are competing with more established, (relatively) more reliable brands. I think that they could have equipped the Emgrand with a more powerful engine to make a dent in this segment. I considered buying the Honda City at one point, but then decided to purchase the BR-V instead -- based on this review and given the 3 choices, I would buy the Almera. Honestly though, if I am going to buy another car, I would keep my Navara, sell my BR-V and buy me a Geely Coolray.😉

Personally, safety is a priority rather than other snazzy features. Second would be resale value (it's still an financial investment), then after sales service/reliability. IMHO, I'd still give my 2nd place to the Honda, Toyota being first. Great video, love your content!

The Almera base variant (EL) is MT only. Fun thought: their MT has 5% higher torque output (160 Nm) than their CVT (152 Nm) at 2400 rpm and increases from 160 to 170 Nm at around 4000 rpm. Fun thought #2: It's around 200k cheaper than the mid-spec variant (VE), at 728k casa price. Fun thought #3: the highest variant (VL N-Sport) only comes with a CVT. Fun thought #4: Nissan Philippines has tested the Almera MT to be more fuel-efficient than the CVT.

For C segment cars, 2 major things matter for me the most. Firstly it's power combined with fuel efficiency. and lastly is apple carplay / android auto. These cars are meant for city driving and some occasional out of towns of which during traffic and long drives, they come in very handy. for that, the City is a clear win for me since I'm much more comfortable on a naturally aspirated engine than with turbo and not to mention the cruiser control. Though much more expensive, City RS was not mentioned since it has paddles for a more sporty drive. Perhaps a bit of advice for future comparos, you can add more points that matter most and lesser on those the don't rather than a one is to one scoring system

How about adding "durability" and "parts availability" in the criteria? Because i've heard that it takes a minimum of 3 months for geely parts to arrive in casas. There are no available parts here in the phillipines (from what ive seen in other reviews) and you have to order them thru their branches which are also limited for geely. Marami naring magaling mag-repair home-service, they have their own equipment and scanners which I highly appreciate. Only time will tell if Geely mechanics will eventually do freelance and offer out-of-casa services; I hope they will, pero the parts kasi talagaaa! Our Azkarra took 10 weeks just for the shipping of parts and another several days for the ECU replacement and the refitting of the software. Apparently may pila sa casa for these repairs, understandable since owners are dependent on dealerships na talaga . I suspect na with the electronics overload it'll be harder for mechanics with little casa experience and parts source to fix these cars outside the dealerships. First place should've went to the City just because of how it provides a great balance between price, practicality, engine & driving performance, and value for money. It's the only one among the three that doesn't fall behind the bare minimum and equally excels in all aspects, as opposed to the Emgrand that excels in tech, features, design, safety but loses out in performance. Similarly, the Almera performs well in driving and fuel efficiency, you can tell how much Caco enjoyed the drive. However, it does fall behind in some features and safety compared to the other two. So overall, with an adjusted criteria, the ranking should've been. 1. City 2. Emgrand & Almera (Tie)

Almera won the fuel economy when it will only take the much more expensive fuel. Also I'm guessing only the drive mode was used and no manual mode which is normally ideal for inclines and downhills.

You keep saying gear on a CVT transmission and wanting a downshift or upshift. A CVT has no gears and any feeling you get of a gear is a electronic simulation that does nothing. What you should be acknowledging is the transmission drone from a CVT. The sport mode you want is a throttle pedal reprogram that changes the input needed to accelerate the car. None of those cars have a true sport mode that changes suspension and engine tuning. Also why the need for a rear parking sensor if you have a camera?

Almera is the best for Cebu amongst the 3, in my view at least. We have city and mountains, not much highways and no expressways as vast as Luzon and Mindanao. The 35L tank is not going to be a problem as well because with a fuel efficiency of 18 to 22km/l, you're looking at 650 to 770km per full tank. Even if we drop that to a conservative 15km/l that's still 525kms. That's about 18 to 25kms a day for a whole month. Cebu island is only 256kms north to south. Cebu City is only 15kms north to south. So yeah, our odometers are not so banged up. The Honda City comes a close second. All a matter of preference, really, and how it adapts to your location, what you use the car for (mainly) and yeah, let's add loyalty and past experience with the brand haha. Granted, I was expecting the Almera to be a tad bit cheaper but it is what it is.

Almera might have lost by technicality of the pointing system but it wins on the things that matter the most. Driving performance and fuel efficiency. The other categories that City and Emgrand won on looks and accessories are mostly on preference. In my opinion, all in all, Almera actually won this comparo.

all that being said, I think so too.. I have the old almera, it's really an intriguing car from an owners perspective. It's a pretty meh looking car stock, but owners seem to just fall in love with it coz I think the driving experience is something not talked about consciously. Quite lacking on acceleration, but handling is something, no issue goin up mountains and fuel efficiency is there. And when compared to the Vios, I'd prefer it to the superman and maybe a slight edge against the batman. From the details discussed here, it seems that the new Almera has the old ones feel carried over with more driving capability despite engine config and with a modernized look. May I just add that the old almera has a mindboggling rear passenger space, I've tried pushing the front seats all the way forward, you can do a few things back there lol. Yet the new almera seems to have just comparative rear space to its current rivals when I peeked at it in the show room.

And for some car guys who has a deep knowledge about cars and engine will surely prefer a reliable and fuel efficient car with a some safety tech here and there that will get you from point a to b regardless of the type of road rather than something that will put you in a state of worry thinking if you'll be able to reach your destination.

Sorry but I disagree. You say the City and Emgrand won on looks and accessories? Maybe you are only referring to the Emgrand? Actually, the City was placed third in that category with only one point. This might be a different story if we are comparing the City RS given its sporty look and aggressive LED headlights. On the driving performance, the almera is the most fun to drive but according to caco, the city is not far behind plus 10L more in the fuel tank which means lesser visit to the gasoline station. If you check, Fuel efficiency is actually the same. Honda City won the comfort category. It has the most comfortable passenger seats with better material plus the aircon vents. Honda City also won the Boot Space Category. Honda City has cruise control with more airbags. On the other side, The Almera has no cruise control, lesser airbags, lesser fuel capacity, the only one with no aircon vents at the back given the hot weather here in the philippines, smallest boot space, a little rough fabric material, requires a more expensive 95octane fuel, and the most expensive of the three. Emgrand will be hard to beat given its price. 💯 Value for Money. But reliability, durability, parts availability, after sales service, resale value are also some factors that are needed to be considered by the buyers. I honestly think that Caco is on point with this comparo🙂👌

One thing I really hate are underpowered vehicles. Which is why I'm not really attracted to the MPVs we have now like the xpander, rush, avanza, ertiga, etc2x. If you're new to driving, you won't realize it yet but having the right amount of power in your vehicle is also a safety feature that'll really save you from accidents.

The almera is Fun to drive, outstanding fuel efficiency, comfort, and the style and looks that won't age much even after 10 years. Not a lot of drivers are uber tech savy so some entertainment factors doesn't affect much but they put their tech more on what's going to help the driver more like 360° camera. I saw one in the road can't help but to smile and feel jealous about the owners ride.

It comes with a higher ADAS system than the Geely Coolray SE Sport sold in the Philippines at a price range starting from RM65k (Peso776,305.00) to RM80k (Peso955,452.00) for the highest specification. It also comes with a powerful 150PS engine with 225NM Torque and a 7 Speed Wet Clutch DCT transmission that is more powerful than the Geely Emgrand sold in the Philippines.

using my Nissan Almera for 9 months now. if you're on the lookout for a subcompact sedan, highly recommend this one. it's a fun car to drive, very peppy even with the smaller engine thanks to that turbo. especially fun driving on expressways. fuel economy has been around 9-12 km/l in the city on speeds ranging between an average of 25-50kph. On mixed to highway driving, i usually get 18-23 km/l. CVT is also great, 95% of the time there is no delay. Only very seldom when the car seems to not move as soon as you depress the accelerator. PMS cost is also quite cheap. PS. If you're around Laguna/Quezon, avoid Nissan Lipa dealership as they have poor customer service and it took 6 months before I got my freebies and 8 months before I got my LTO license plate.
