I guess this video has been around for seven or eight years but I never saw it back then so I took my Honda Civic 2001 to a decent place and had them flush the transmission for around $100 bucks. - Today I watched this video (BTW: Awesome video) and drained my Honda Civic 2001 Automatic transmission - 2.85 litters drained out. After adding new Honda ATF I drove it around I could really feel the difference. I wasn't going to drain the fluid again after a week but I read a comment that said it was worth the extra effort so in a week I will do it again. $17 bucks is all it cost me for 3 quarts of Honda ATF fluid. $34 dollars total when I drain it in a week. Sure the hell beats $100 bucks!! THANK YOU!

Dont do chemical flushes for honda transmissions, they will destroy your transmission, the color of the atf really doesn’t matter unless your ocd about it. All the brown coloring is clutch material that’s already in your transmission.

Good video, wasn't sure which of the many bolts was the drain plug until I viewed this. Only thing about checking the level after refilling is that my mechanic (in the town I lived until last year) advised I had to check the ATF dipstick level with the engine running (on flat ground of course).

Good job! I'm guessing you had to Jack the driver's side up higher than the pass side, to allow more fluid to flow out? And to everyone nit-picking in the comments, he did a basic atf drain & fill, without a fluid evacuation tool or taking trans apart, that's about the best one can do at home. And on these particular auto trans, they don't have the "usual" removable trans pan and filter... transmission literally has to be removed and taken apart to access Honda's "lifetime" filter. Some install inline filters to help.

I have a 2001 Honda Civic LX that I picked up. It has about 135,000 miles on it. Runs great, but the trans shifts really long from 3rd to 4th. I was going to change the ATF and the filter as well as add some Lucas. I noticed that you didn't change out the trans filter. Is there a reason for that? Also my fluid is really nice and pink, do you think my issue is more than just a fluid change? Thanks!
@LJT9393
@LJT9393 5 жыл бұрын
The transmission filter is internal on these cars, as for most if not all older civics and accords. You would need to drop the tranny to get at it. Could be the transmission shift control solenoids. I think 01-05 civics have lots of trans issues.

Hi there, my father-in-law installed a used transmission, after running the car a bit, he measured the oil and it needed some. He added a liter of Macron V, and some other brand. The car has not been run since adding that transmission oil. I got some genuine honda transmission oil and plan on changing the oil myself. What I don't know is if I need to run the car before changing the oil. Don't want the Macron V oil to get into all the other spaces. Any input on this would be helpful.

+Leonel Salazar Hi Leonel, the first step would be change the transmission fluid with some quality Honda fluid then take it for a test drive. When you change the fluid not all of the old fluid will come out, by doing a second change this should get most of the old fluid out of the transmission. If your problem is still there you may have a bigger problem. Try the double change and go from there. Good luck.

Leonel Salazar because the existing fluid is quite old I would drain then refill take it around the block, drain and refill in the same day.

Hi... good video, but I have a question. Is the total volume of fluid needed to replace all the fluid 2.8l or 5.6l? Looking to do mine and wanted to verify that amount. -- thanks
@HondaCivic7thGe
@HondaCivic7thGe 9 жыл бұрын
Hi, you will probably only drain out 2.8 to 3 litres , the rest of the fluid stay in the transmission. doing several fluid changes will replace most of the old fluid

You have a 8th gen civic...most of the 8th gen have a "grade logic controlled" transmission. What that means is, when you are going up or down hills the transmission may stay in a gear longer until depending speed and acceleration. When going down a hill it is like engine braking (saving your brake pads). Going up a hill, this will help get up the hill will out premature up shifting. All normal. Notice when this happens while driving (hills or grade changes). Enjoy your civic!!!

@enriqueortiz5440
@enriqueortiz5440 6 жыл бұрын
yockoswl Honda uses "lifetime" filters that you have to remove the transmission and open the casing to access the filter. It is not worth it to replace the filter as labor costs about the same to replace the trans. Most people just change the fluid and wait until it fails and have the whole transmission replaced. The filters can go quite a long time though, my 03 civic has 204,579 miles and is still going great.

The transmission should be replaced every 60,000 KMs
@enriqueortiz5440
@enriqueortiz5440 6 жыл бұрын
If it was taken care of (fluid changed every 30k) it's fine no matter what the mileage is. My 03 Civic has 209k on the original A/T and still shifts fine having fluid changes every 30k. You just don't want to wait until you have over 90k to change the fluid. That's the only time you'll be gambling.

I have a 2002 honda civic ex. how tight should the bolt be (in foot pounds). Or is it the same in all honda models from 2001-2005. By the way in my car the bolt is down, unlike this one is to the side facing the right wheel, mine is down facing the ground directly. Please advise anyone How tight should the bolt be? Thanks Ps: the manual does not specify how tight should the atf bolt be, it only specifies for the oil pan bolt (29 foot-pounds)

2.5 quart for 2001-2005 on here. haynes.com/en-us/tips-tutorials/2001-2011-honda-civic-routine-maintenance-faq . I wouldn’t overfill it. It messes up the transmission.

I only put what’s recommended amount for the car. I contacted the Honda dealer before doing the transmission fluid change on my car. They told me the amount. They was correct. I put in the amount. It landed on the second line on the dipstick. Overfilling or not putting the correct amount could damage the transmission. I overfilled it with 5-6 quarts. It damaged my transmission, but it still runs and drive just wouldn’t shift right. Great video by the way. Some cars are different when changing fluids or checking fluids on a car.
