I guess this video has been around for seven or eight years but I never saw it back then so I took my Honda Civic 2001 to a decent place and had them flush the transmission for around $100 bucks. - Today I watched this video (BTW: Awesome video) and drained my Honda Civic 2001 Automatic transmission - 2.85 litters drained out. After adding new Honda ATF I drove it around I could really feel the difference. I wasn't going to drain the fluid again after a week but I read a comment that said it was worth the extra effort so in a week I will do it again. $17 bucks is all it cost me for 3 quarts of Honda ATF fluid. $34 dollars total when I drain it in a week. Sure the hell beats $100 bucks!! THANK YOU!

Dont do chemical flushes for honda transmissions, they will destroy your transmission, the color of the atf really doesn’t matter unless your ocd about it. All the brown coloring is clutch material that’s already in your transmission.

Good job! I'm guessing you had to Jack the driver's side up higher than the pass side, to allow more fluid to flow out? And to everyone nit-picking in the comments, he did a basic atf drain & fill, without a fluid evacuation tool or taking trans apart, that's about the best one can do at home. And on these particular auto trans, they don't have the "usual" removable trans pan and filter... transmission literally has to be removed and taken apart to access Honda's "lifetime" filter. Some install inline filters to help.

You have a 8th gen civic...most of the 8th gen have a "grade logic controlled" transmission. What that means is, when you are going up or down hills the transmission may stay in a gear longer until depending speed and acceleration. When going down a hill it is like engine braking (saving your brake pads). Going up a hill, this will help get up the hill will out premature up shifting. All normal. Notice when this happens while driving (hills or grade changes). Enjoy your civic!!!

If it was taken care of (fluid changed every 30k) it's fine no matter what the mileage is. My 03 Civic has 209k on the original A/T and still shifts fine having fluid changes every 30k. You just don't want to wait until you have over 90k to change the fluid. That's the only time you'll be gambling.

@@HondaCivic7thGe you mean the " transmission fluid" or the transmission itself??

I have a 2002 honda civic ex. how tight should the bolt be (in foot pounds). Or is it the same in all honda models from 2001-2005. By the way in my car the bolt is down, unlike this one is to the side facing the right wheel, mine is down facing the ground directly. Please advise anyone How tight should the bolt be? Thanks Ps: the manual does not specify how tight should the atf bolt be, it only specifies for the oil pan bolt (29 foot-pounds)

if you let the car back down w/ plug still off would more atf drain out ?
@HondaCivic7thGe8 жыл бұрын
it stands to reason that more fluid would drain out, not sure if I would try it

Michael Leighton i tried it a few days ago. more did come out, but not a lot.. i had enough atf fluid to replace what ever amount came out. no problem at all.

2.5 quart for 2001-2005 on here. haynes.com/en-us/tips-tutorials/2001-2011-honda-civic-routine-maintenance-faq . I wouldn’t overfill it. It messes up the transmission.
@HondaCivic7thGe5 жыл бұрын
Good advice, it really depends on how much fluid comes out when you drain it. For me it has been about 3 litres

I only put what’s recommended amount for the car. I contacted the Honda dealer before doing the transmission fluid change on my car. They told me the amount. They was correct. I put in the amount. It landed on the second line on the dipstick. Overfilling or not putting the correct amount could damage the transmission. I overfilled it with 5-6 quarts. It damaged my transmission, but it still runs and drive just wouldn’t shift right. Great video by the way. Some cars are different when changing fluids or checking fluids on a car.
