Honda Civic Type-R FN2: The best value used hot hatch you can buy?

The Honda Civic Type-R FN2 is one of the best value used hot hatches you can buy. In this CarGurus UK video, motoring journalist Vicky Parrott explains why that’s the case, as well as pointing out a few areas to look out for if you’re in the market for a used Civic.
Written review: www.cargurus.c...
Pros
Radical styling still looks fresh
Well deserved reputation for reliability
Clever rear seats and a big boot
Cons
The 1.4 petrol is a tad slow
Bland to drive, except for the Type R
The sloping roof compromises rear headroom
TThe CarGurus verdict
The eighth-generation Honda Civic is an easy used car to recommend, but we can’t help feeling a little frustrated that the radical styling isn’t matched to a more invigorating drive. In standard guise, it’s neither particularly fun nor especially comfortable, so it falls short of the contemporary Ford Focus’s ride and handling benchmark. From the driver’s seat, the Civic is a bit middle of the road, whereas the looks are anything but.
However, the big boot, the clever rear seats and excellent reliability make the Civic a sound used buy. For most potential buyers, the 1.8-litre petrol is the one to choose. It performs strongly and delivers reasonable economy. High-mileage drivers will be better off with the 2.2-litre diesel.
Of course, the comments about the Civic being ordinary to drive don’t apply to the Type R hot hatch. This generation of the Civic Type R may have its detractors, but it’s genuinely one of the best fast hatchbacks of the time. What’s more, it's reliable enough to still make a sound buy after well over a decade on the road.

Most people who slag them off probably never had one. This car was unbelievable to drive the confidence it gives.. I had a 2010 new from honda and it could bounce off the rev limiter around 158mph and although taking a long time to get there you could maintain flat out speed into corners in the wet and 140mph on fresh snow in normal tyres. One of the only cars I got to sell not write off....Crazy car

I’ve owned my 09 Type R about a month. Everything mentioned in the review is pretty much spot on. First thing I did was put a new clutch It and it drives great. The noise is slightly addictive when you plant your foot down and hit vtec, which makes the mpg go down a fair bit 😄

"The EP3 is the best type R" say EP3 owners lol. The best civic type R is the EK9 for a start and the best car with the type R badge is probably what, the DC2 Integra? Anyway thanks to the clarksonites for tanking the price of these as they are great fun. I'd sure as shit have the "worst" type R over a Golf GTI!
@imtheonehero9305
@imtheonehero9305 4 жыл бұрын
Nope! How is the ek9 better when it will oose to the ep3 ? The ep3 is as fast as a interga type r. They're essentially the same car. And seriously? You think the integra is the best car worth the type r name? Did you forget the nsx and fk8 type r? What a dumbass honda fanboy. Ek9 is the overrated one. Ep3 is underrated.
@jonathanbowen3640
@jonathanbowen3640 4 жыл бұрын
@@imtheonehero9305 ep3 is different platform and drive train to dc2 integra. ep3 is more like the dc5 integra. The ep3 went backwards in terms of platform i.e it lost the double wishbone all-round suspension of the ek9 dc2. Ep3 is ok but overrated as a drivers car. In the UK it didn't even come with a LSD!! It was just very cheap when it came out and the opposition golf gti, focus st170 etc had less power. Then the competition cauhgt up in terms of power, 200bhp gold with independent rear suspension and focus st with 225bhp and Renault with the Megane RS . Dc2 type r is probably the best type r of all. hydraulic steering, LSD, all round double wishbone, classic vtec engine and decent driving position unlike the civics. More raw than the dc5. Nsx type r probably great but too rare.

I had a JDM EP3 and driven almost all Type R's i liked it the most. The EP3 was easier to live with, the 3 cup holders and the deep centre storage, that odd shelf above the glovebox, i remember a iPhone 5 would fit perfectly under the ashtray on an angle and not move. The gearstick was close by, the controls were in a simple tidy layout. EDM seems to be missing quite a bit performance wise so i see what you mean. I think the EK9 looks odd from the back I have never driven a FN2. They are rare in New Zealand which is why i clicked on this video. Thinking of the DC2, it didn't have that 'boobah' vtec kick though. The DC2 is a special car. I really like the FD2 Mugen RR one.

It's a Torsion beam not a twisted bar. I've owned both EP3 and FN2 cars and can comprehensively say that the FN2 is the better handling car at speed. Far more planted in the corners....although the drawback to this was very harsh ride quality, especially for rear passengers due to unsprung mass. The EP3 is far more compliant but suffers at high speed and can become slightly unstable when pushing on. Both great cars though.

The EP3/DC5 has seriously flawed geometry: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aaSUfqineMuDjrM Either the newer FN2/FD2 with a redesigned strut front end (that works *much* better) or older DC2/EK/EG with double wishbone front-end and better IRS layout both handle so much better than the EP3/DC5 IMO.

I had an MB6 Civic VTi with the 1.8 engine, modded it with a 4 branch manifold and stainless all the way (including a sports cat as I didn't want to do the dodgy on the MoT). They are great engines "if" you are in the mood but can be a bit tiresome when you're just driving around normally as it needs some effort to tap into the power since they produce very little torque. Still that's barely a criticism as anyone who buys into a sporty Honda knows exactly what they're getting themselves in for.

In this video you could get the impression that the seat is not adjustable while it is. You can lower and adjust the angle of the back of the seat. The only downside is that you need to set it again when you move the seat to let people sit in the back of the car. It is not that often that there are people in the back seats of my car so for me that isn't a big issue. Also adjusting the seat is not that difficult.

A few quality breather + suspension mods and the FN2 is fairly comparable. The reason FD2's are 4-5x the price (well aprox 2-3x here) is due to the fact they're a grey import outside of Japan and Malaysia, and thus relatively rare.

Have to say that I always avoided the fn2r early on, as on paper they looked terrible, less power and torque than a jdm spec ep3 (which are more common here in aus) and alot heavier too, no factory lsd and the raving bad review from Jeremy clarkson. My ep3 ended up being rear ended and it was sadly a total loss, ended up with an fn2r as they are much more affordable, 10-15k for and fn2r vs 25-30k for an ep3. After having owned and driven both I can comfortably say that I love my fn2r, sure it's a little heavier and has less power, but as a daily commuter car it's so much better in every way, they also fixed that notorious torque steer and vague steering feel the ep3r was known for and the rear end is far more planted now you have alot more confidence to push it hard into a corner without losing the rear end. Ive emded up doing afew bolt on mods, header, exhaust, intake and tune and its as eager as any other ep3r. If you're like me and avoiding an fn2r because of the bad reviews from clarkson, or even bad reviews just because it's labelled the worst civic because of its torsion beam, I say take one for a drive and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

@Jude Elcheikh Romania. Unnecessarily expensive. The owners think they are selling gold or bitcoin when they are selling this car, or I don't know how they value their cars. For 12k euros you can get a brand new car ffs. There's one dude with the same advertisment trying to sell his fn2 for years with the same price.

It’s such a shame they’re so expensive. They’re going for more than used Golf 6 GTI’s. I’d still murder for one though.

A championship edition is, but a normal fn2 type r are like 5-6k with under 80k miles, thats similarly priced to a mk5 gti.
@alrumuller9300
@alrumuller9300 4 жыл бұрын
Abdul Wahaab Not in South Africa mate. Here, the 1.8 goes for the same as a Mk5 GTI, the 2.2i-CTDI like mine goes for a bit more, and the Type R equates to roughly £10000, which is a lot of money here.
