Is the Honda CRF300L Rally a good long distance touring bike? Can you travel long distances off-road with a Honda CRF300L Rally? Documents my long distance off-road travels with my 2021 Honda CRF300L Rally to visit a number of mountains in the Cascade range in Washington State.

90% sold on buying this bike. I live in Colorado and am 6ft, 200lbs and wonder if you would consider swapping out the suspension for something more robust for my size if adding some camping gear on the regular. Great scenery and riding!
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 2 жыл бұрын
In full riding gear I'm 6' 1" and about 200 lbs as well. The rear shock does have preload adjustment that should allow you to get the proper sag on the bike with your weight + gear. That said though, the suspension is definitely very soft and is not well suited to aggressive riding. I use my bike as a light weight ADV bike and so don't mind the softer suspension on longer rides but ultimately it depends on how you want to use the bike.

What are you using for a drone? I have a DJI mini 2 I want to take out on trips. Sadly it doesn't have follow me mode or sensors but I can still get some good shots I am sure. Nice video.. Keep up the good work.

I use a DJI mini 2 for the nature shots and a Skydio 2 for the tracking shots. The mini 2 is a capable drone that you could do a lot with. I love how small it is too, really works well for motorcycle travel where space is a premium. Ride safe buddy👍

I like how you keep the music low, and put your comments on closed captioning. Great video. I wonder how the 300 Rally would fare with my 240 pounds on it? I currently ride a Silver wing but want something a bit more gravel road, fire road, ATV trail capable.
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the positive feedback, I appreciate it🍻 I can't speak directly to how the bike would do with your weight on it. With all my video gear + food + water + me + riding gear I'm probably just over 200 lbs and I have no complaints about how the bike handles that weight. The bike is rated to 326lbs, but ultimately you'd probably need to test ride it to see how it works for you.

I'm 235 and I haven't changed the rear shock on mine yet. I will do it but you can still enjoy the bike on standard suspension if your riding style isn't too aggressive. Only done one camping weekend on it so far but a few extra pounds of camping gear made no difference to handling

Awesome Video work as usual. Thanks for taking us on the trip. I'm envious of the proximity to those trails where you live. The drone footage was perfection as well. Just curious what drone you use, as it doesn't seem to jump around like a skydio. I have a mini 3 pro, but the tracking on a motorcycle is a bit Meh. Rating for vid. . .👍👍
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos Жыл бұрын
I'm happy to hear you like the videos🍻 I use two drones: a DJI mini 2 and the skydio 2. There's learning curve to using drones in order to get good footage. As I use drones more, I am much more deliberate about how and where I use them. The skydio offers impressive tracking but is certainly fallible and can crash if you push things too far. Unfortunately, I can't speak to the tracking on DJI drones as I do all of my tracking shots with the skydio. As is usually the case with videos, a lot of the work comes in the edit and post processing of the footage. Anyway, I don't claim to be an expert but that's my honest opinion👍
@jethrowingnut13
@jethrowingnut13 Жыл бұрын
@@TrekEthos Thanks again for the detailed reply. Yes I understand there is a big learning curve to get good footage. Im just scratching the surface of my mini 3 capabilities. I believe it is more of a photographers drone, however I did do some active track tests in a video I put on my channel. It was Ok, but does limit your speed in tricky environments. Agree 100% with everything you say, about post, etc. 👍

How much power does the little engine lose at altitude? The fuel injection must help as compared to a carb though. I rode for decades, got out of riding a few years ago, and this is the bike I'm considering to get back into it. British Columbia Canada.
@TrekEthos
@TrekEthos 2 жыл бұрын
The loss of power is noticeable on higher speed highways - In Colorado and sections of Wyoming the bike had trouble maintaining 75+ mph at around 7,000 feet. At low speeds like in this video power loss is not very noticeable at higher elevations.

Great scenery and video editing skills. Do you always ride solo?

Thanks! Yeah I do ride solo most of the time - most people I know aren't interested in riding longer/more adventurous routes

Hey man :) Are you happy with the bike? I've seen that Itchy Boots has got one too, I was thinking of maybe going for one next time I get a bike.. Do you miss anything? More hp? More cc? Last bike I had was a Husky 701, and before that I've had S1000RR, GSX-R1000, R1 etc.

I went from a Ducati Multistrada 1200S Pikes Peak to this bike so 150hp to 25hp :) Looks like you have a preference towards sport bikes - The Rally is probably the least sporty motorcycle I've ever owned. It's slow & has very soft suspension so it's not a great fit if you're looking to do aggressive riding. I think what makes this bike remarkable is it's ability to travel confidently down single track while simultaneously being capable of sitting on the highway for hours if needed. I road this bike 9000 miles in 5 months across 10 states. Its light weight is the Rallys best asset - I also own a Tenere 700 and compared to the Rally it feels much, much heavier and much more top heavy. The Rallys drawbacks are it's not sporty at all, you have to travel at more modest speeds offroad due to the soft suspension, and it can struggle a bit on higher speed interstate (75+mph) particularly into headwinds or up inclines.

@@TrekEthos hmm, maybe royal Enfield Himalayan is a good alternative. Right now I don't want a superbike again, I kinda leaned towards KTM adventure bikes, but they're 1290 I believe.. Gs1200 would be nice too, but expensiveml. Both royal and this Honda is pretty affordable and I'm sure one could get a lot better mileage than you did on your 1000 mile day.. I normally don't go faster than 50mph (unless coasting) here on the roads in Norway, saves fuel :D But I will admit acceleration can be fun. I thought the s1000RR to have slow acceleration once I got to know it. Just was not fun anymore.

Dude! Incredible. I did buy a slightly taller windscreen for my 2017 Rally. It's about 3 inches taller and covers my phone which I locate where you put your Garmin.

Thanks! Yeah I could see that - I'm 6' tall and the windscreen is not quite tall enough to completely cover me. The top 1-2" of my helmet is in the air stream. I'd bet the taller windscreen would make the bike even more comfortable at higher speeds.

@@TrekEthos I was going to ask about that. I'm 5'8" so I'm thinking the windscreen would send the air stream over me. What about around the sides? Does it keep the air stream off the body? And oh yeah, the video is great. In the past I seem to recall you use the DJI Mini. In this video the drone seems to be tracking you. The Mini does not have that function. Did you upgrade or do you ride with someone else that helps with the footage? Take care.

Awesome I took notes on your locations. I have been looking on maps but finding forest roads etc. has been difficult for me. Will be looking for better maps soon. I finally picked up a 2018 Rally and really like it. :)

Congrats on finally getting the Rally! I actually used google maps for the majority of this route. I switch back and forth between the satellite image, topographical maps, and the baseline map to find potential scenic locations. Safe riding my friend👍
