Honda CRV coolant pipe replacement. Not a bad job but if it breaks off then have some patience. Coolant pipe is not that expensive and not a lot of tools are needed.

Very helpful video! My CRV with 110K miles is in need of this pipe, says my mechanic, and this video helped me better understand the issue. Great production quality also. Thank you!

I went through this today on my 2007 Accord. It sucked. The pipe was rotted, but the housing split. The bolts were so bad I had to cut the housing apart to get access to the bolts. It came apart in many pieces. The thermostat bolts would not come out either. I had to replace all of the bolts, both housing and thermostat, and pipe. Install was not bad at all compared to the removal. Same concept as yours. Thanks for the video

Since this pipe is prone to rust, would it be wise to spray the replacement pipe with Flex Seal (liquid rubber) prior to installing it, especially in the area where it connects to the thermostat housing and the weld spots (brackets)? Unless the rust starts from within the pipe (??) which I wonder - why isn't it a hose instead of a pipe?

Since the repair requires the removal of the intake manifold, you should replace your starter motor while you have access to it, especially if you have a high mileage vehicle. Also the hot antifreeze leaks on the your starter which my cause your starter to later fail.

You are 100 percent correct with that tip.

Keep running into an issue of the o ring that goes to the heater to the thermostat housing keeps slipping out and going over the tube. Did you run into that?
@Saltbox97
@Saltbox97 Жыл бұрын
I did not have that issue. My pipe had a groove for the seal to sit in. I also used some silicone spray to help the seal slip in.

How did you unbolt the wiring harness that goes under the plentum? At the connection near the bottom radiator hose?

What can we do for a 2013 model that has a leaking heater pipe? The dealership wants to charge me 1000$ to fix and replace. Can I ask for off market pieces?

Should I buy thermostat and housing and do you recommend replacing hardware?
@Saltbox97
@Saltbox97 Жыл бұрын
Hi There, if you have the means to purchase and replace it this is the perfect time. Depending on where you live those fasteners can be nasty, rusted, seized, etc. Housings can crack where that pipe inserts so have a good look at that. Aftermarket parts are priced decently.

Is the heater's pipe end(Thermostat housing side)goes all the way in or just sit on top with the gasket acting as stopper? It's so hard to put it in with the gasket on, if so, what's the trick? Thanks in advance.
@Saltbox97
@Saltbox97 5 ай бұрын
O-ring actually slips down inside the thermostat housing.
@kensacdalan4748
@kensacdalan4748 5 ай бұрын
You mean to say I don't put it on the pipe edge, just insert it on the housing hole pf the thermostat? It's hard to push it down.
@Saltbox97
@Saltbox97 5 ай бұрын
@@kensacdalan4748 O-ring first goes on the pipe, it sits in a groove in pipe. Then you push the pipe into the housing and the o-ring goes into the housing and does not just sit on top of housing. Just push the pipe in as far as it will go and when you put the bolts in the pipe brackets to engine you’ll know it’s in the correct spot. Main thing to remember is the o-ring is sealing between pipe and housing and not just siting on top of housing. You’ll likely need a little silicone spray or something to lubricate the o-ring, then wiggle/turn pipe back and forth as you push into housing. Try to test fit the pipe without o-ring just to see how far it goes in.

Hey Saltbox97! Great video! I actually just pulled this rusted pipe out of my own 2010 CR-V. I agree with your assessment, not a terribly difficult job, just disappointing 😅 But you seem like you know a thing or two about cars, so I was hoping to get your advice on something I noticed after taking my intake plenum off to replace that coolant pipe... There was some pretty noticeable motor oil residue inside the intake plenum (right where it mounts to the engine) as well as some oil residue inside the intake ports in the cylinder head. Prior to this coolant leak I had noticed that my CR-V started to consume oil between oil changes and if I had to guess, this seems like it might be a source of that problem. So I guess my question is, is there a way I can remedy motor oil finding its way back into my intake? Does this sound like a PCV issue to you? Or is it something awful like piston rings, which I am not well equipped to tackle myself. Anywho, Thanks for this video! Really great filming and editing!
@MrJimmyroberts

Hi There, great to hear you were able to change your pipe. For oil in intake, I would definitely swap out the PCV valve as a start. It’s easy to access and inexpensive.

Great video, such a piss poor design by Honda. A nipple off the thermostat housing with a length of heater hose would have been a long lasting design and easier to replace.
