In this video I have a look at an older CRV that has a customer complaint of no power (won't go over 35mph) they also stated that the red brake light and VSA light was on. Are the problems related? Let's find out! -Enjoy!

A few years back a friend brought me a 10 yr old cr-v that was in Syracuse area and later southern Fl. Couldn’t believe how much corrosion it had on everything underneath. First issue was getting the wheels to come off the hubs. Then the caliper pins where nearly frozen. Put all new brake components on and got it all working again. The rust belt is so hard on vehicles. Love the videos and your teaching.

I really like how you show both common sense mechanical tests and investigations along with computer support to get a better picture of the problems going on. Unfortunately some newer mechanics rely solely on computer analysis which doesnt always give you the whole story. I also try to get as much history from the customer as I can. I like to solve the problem, not pass it on. Please keep teaching as you go. Great content!

They must use an absolutely obscene amount of salt on the roads where Eric is. I live in PA and they salt the hell out of the roads here every time it snows as well as liquid "Brine" before it snows. Last year I had to replace my 10 year old Ford Escape with 160k on it due to an unfortunate encounter with a deer. There was no rust or corrosion under the vehicle despite the 10 winters it went through here. I did, however, go through a car wash with the "undercarriage wash" every 2 weeks in the winter, not sure if that was the key as I highly doubt ford used better metal / coatings / paint than Honda.
@jasonyoung5628
@jasonyoung5628 3 жыл бұрын
@@keithcurtis6671 that's amazing, here in Nebraska every escape rusts out at the rear subframe. My theory is that automakers figured out how to make a drivetrain last for damn near a half million miles, but then also realized that nobody would ever buy a new vehicle ever again. So they just made the metal shittier so it rusts out and forces replacement or the car.

Option #2 is not an option. Brake fluid does not disappear. It’s a tell tell sign of brake pad wear. Once you replace brake pads, push caliper pistons back in, outside of the wear the calipers took, you should have close to full of brake fluid. As rotors wear, your fluid drops, but not by much.

I would imagine the exhaust flow out the end is significantly low which can be determined by putting your hand over the exhaust pipe exit. Not related, but I have a 1997 GMC Sonoma with the Vortec V6 with a K&N air filter with just over 237,000 miles on it. Every so often I have to clean the MAFS and the throttle body and butterfly because of the oil from the air filter getting sucked into the intake. When the engine is cold it idles about 100 rpms higher but not affected much when it's at operating temperature. I wonder if cutting open the converter, you'll be able to tell why it's clogged whether from oil or just collapsed from age.
@K.Kelly87
@K.Kelly87 3 жыл бұрын
The oil in those filters is why I cannot use one. I have a VW. Their MAFs are so touchy and expensive. The K&N oil coats, then burns them out super fast. I had one on my 1979 Olds.. Made it a bit stronger, and made it so you could HEAR it suck up all your gas into the 4 barrel carb.

Deja vu!!! Back in the 'olden' days, mid/late 70's of the Honda CVCC engines, Honda did not use catalytic converters when everyone else was transitioning to them. Instead, inside the large 2 pc cast/welded cast iron exhaust manifold was a welded in place stainless steel plate. Any experienced welder will tell you SS and cast iron is NOT the best weldment. The concept was the engine exhaust would heat up the SS plate close to cherry hot and any unburnt fuel downstream of the engine would be vaporized, and burnt within the manifold. Novel idea but in time the weld would fail, the SS plate drop and clog the manifold. Symptom...little/no power, reluctance to rev and occasionally engine overheating. We did a huge number of warranty replacements. First clue of clogged manifold...that same dull roar at the beginning of your road test. Seems 80's/90's/early 2000's era Hondas have a problem with failed converters, fairly common.

A misfire can dump raw fuel into the cat causing the insides to melt and become plugged. Oh some cars (I think Honda included) the traction control is turned off If the engine misfires. That can turn on the ABS and Traction lights. Every cat I’ve replaced has been the result of another problem, never the cause. It’s not impossible , but my experience asks “what killed it?”
