Chris has been back to M&P for another used bike review, this time, it's a Honda Gold Wing. Can he be won over by the comfortable heated armchair?

If you buy a 20 year old Goldwing, as I did, check the air filter. It's probably still on the original one as it's right in the middle of the bike and needs major surgery to get at it. Otherwise it's pretty easy to work on, and is a fantastic bike. Most of them have been 'babied' their entire lives, as they are generally owned by older guys who know a thing or two about comfort and reliability. After five previous bikes, it's the last bike I'll ever buy, and I'm not upset at that!

There's also a high chance they're maintained by a retired mechanic, sometimes meaning it's maintained to perfection and beyond.

Too much is made of changing the air filter. There are several how-to YT videos from which I made up an instruction sheet. Be patient and methodical. Top tip 1: piece of cardboard to keep trim bolts in the right sequence because they're different sizes. Top tip 2: if the cruise control has lag (most do) now's the time to adjust it whilst the shelter's off.

I'm a sports bike rider, and a biker for 40 years. I bought a 2005 Goldwing. I toured 2 up with all the luggage and woman's stuff including a tank bag, from north east UK to Australia and back, I also toured all of Ireland. I had no aches or pains. 500 miles UK riding on my old hayabusa or my current zx14 I'm was crippled. I had the Goldwing 12 years, while touring.. fantastic touring bike. Look at vids on KZbin of how to pic up a Goldwing properly without effort, not the ball breaker way you did it lol.. good vlog though.

Nothing worse than your body or a certain part killing you on a long trip. Rode 3k miles on my Aprilia. When I throw a leg over it now, I wonder how the hell did I do that. Now I have additional HD electra. One day 1200 miles nothing hurts. Couldn't agree with you more. That trip must have been amazing. How did you deal with the bike shipping to Australia?

I started on a 750 cruiser, and went to a 1500 cruiser. But i must say after going to a Goldwing i've done more long distance trips much further than i've ever thought I would travel on a bike. It's been reliable, comfortable, and my passenger absolutely approves as well. 2 week trip for 2 of us travelling eastern Canada 4000km. Done no problems

I was like you and made fun of the Wing in my earlier riding days, but after 20+ yrs of riding and 20 bikes prior, I picked up a '15 GW F6B Deluxe and have fell in love with it over the last 1.5 years I have owned it. I have made it my "do-it-all" bike, commute on it daily as well as any fun or long rides! I like that I can sit, stand, or stretch my legs on hwy pegs. I also love that I can fit my HJC helmet in the left saddle bag (pannier)!

I ride a lot of miles with my partner on the back, when I first got into motorcycling I always said the exact same "Just get a car!" After going for a back and butt breaking journey through Norway on a Vulcan 650 with luggage and two people I decided to explore the big touring bike world as the group I ride with is affectionatly known as "The Goldwing group".. Ended up with a GV1400 (Suzuki's weird version of a Goldwing) and putting down almost over 50.000km in about two years. It's been to Austria, Slovenia, Norway (Up to Trondheim, time is limited.. sadly), Central France, etc.. it's a joy! They're pig-heavy but you can use that weight to make them corner, unlike the 1800 though the frame is a wet noodle and you can't just adjust course on a whim. For anyone on the fence/hating them, please.. keep on buying other bikes. It makes my GL1800/GL1500 a little cheaper when my garage is finally expanded :)

I love that. There is definitely a guilty pleasure with "giving up" all the "fun" parts of motorcycling and gaining all the "boring" parts, yet I can't help but think "that's a cool bike" and want to give it a go!

When you say giving up what do you mean ? Goldwing does everything normal bikes do including wheelies
@lawdpleasehelpmeno
@lawdpleasehelpmeno Ай бұрын
This is just such a crazy and erroneous concept. You don't give up anything with a Goldwing, and you only gain. I've heard all kinds of wild claims about the Goldwing but "it can't do x/y" claims are always the craziest. Goldwings are crazy manoeuvrable and they are a joy in the twisties. You can lane and edge filter just fine on a Goldwing (I do it regularly). You can take it on dirt and on grass if you need to. People just live on ego defence mode and they doubt themselves and their ability to handle such a large and powerful motorbike, and instead of rising to the challenge, come up with crazy ideas to cope.

I bought a 2015 Anniversary Edition new in 2016. My ST1300 had gotten to the point it was just too top heavy and tall in the saddle for a 71 year old. With the way the bike carries its weight and handles this is likely my last scoot after 65 years of riding road bikes. I use it for everything except taking my mower to the shop.

If there's one thing I've learned from owning a Goldwing is that people making fun of it are just on 100% copium. It usually comes from a place of insecurity as they don't think they can handle the weight or the size of the bike.

Great review. I had one of these a few years back, finished in a beautiful burnt orange colour, but kind of bought it at the wrong time. Now I'm retired, it would have been perfect. Well, nearly. The one thing I didn't like about the Goldwing, like so many other bikes, was the linked brakes. Perhaps there's a technique I never mastered but I won't touch any bike that uses this system or one like it, which means there are a lot of great bikes I'm missing out on.

I bought a 2003 wing with 69,000 miles on it. It been a little over a year and it now has 81,000 miles. It's been a reliable bike. Only thing I had happen was my rear brake pad came out of the bracket and the pad rubbed on the rivots on the rotor. Who knows why that happened other than there was insane brake dust on the rear wheel.

My master plan is to buy a used one and visit family I haven’t seen in a while. About a 4,000 mile trip. Then sell it when I get back. My fear is that I won’t want to sell it though. All my bikes are geared towards off road and adventure. A Goldwing in the stable would be like having your mother in law visit but never actually go home.

17,000 miles on a 20 year old goldwing? That's damn near factory mileage compared to some models of it's age. The 2018+ 6th gen is a very different bike. It's smaller and lighter and the reason why Honda withdrew the brilliant ST Pan European. The 6th gen Goldwing was conceived to appeal to ST Pan European riders and Goldwing riders alike. Trouble is, compromise doesn't sell.

The risk of massive deferred maintenance on 20 year old bike is high, especially in North America. Only 10% follow the maintenance schedule and best practices. Who changes brake fluid and brake lines every 2 years, radiator fluid every 3 years, etc. No one. Most wash a bike like a car, which is wrong. Electronics, water and soap not good. Instead use detailer or waterless wash. Bikes are generally neglected. Sold when broken or worn out. No one has tradable service records showing maintenance schedule was followed. A gamble unless you are mechanic. Tried buying old and cheap, it backfires and you end up spending more than newer bike.
