I' m very glad to see your post because I am 5'-6" and I was concerned about the seat height. The tallest bike I owned had a seat height of 31.8" (this is my max) So this 2023 Honda Goldwing DCT(non tour) has a seat height of 29.3. I guess I should be OK with it, now if I can go from 180 to 150 lbs I will be very happy. Are you happy with the stock seat? I hear many people buy Saddlemen or Russell seats saying those are more comfortable.

@northofthecity21 Жыл бұрын
@@nr3157Keep in mind the GW has a wide seat and that takes a little extra length to reach the floor. At a similar height as you, I lowered mine a couple inches ($40 lowering links) and that made it way more comfortable and less intimidating.
@nr3157
@nr3157 Жыл бұрын
@northofthecity21 Before you lowered your bike, were you able to put both feet down halfway? I mean, the only part of your feet that won't touch the ground are the ankles. I can ride like this without any problems, but there's no way I will ride it if I'm tiptoeing . I saw a video of a midget that would get off his bike and stand every time he came to a stop.
@northofthecity21
@northofthecity21 Жыл бұрын
@@nr3157 I was able to put both feet down half way but I wanted a bit more contact for extra confidence. Since I almost never put my right foot down on stops, perhaps I could have lived without the modification but I can tell for backing up and stopping at uneven pavement, it's given me a lot more confidence. Now I don't have to worry about picking the right spot to stop.

I have owned this incredible machine since 20. Got it new. in 35 years of riding, the best machine ever. I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE my DCT. By now, I know how it thinks, how it behaves and she talks to me as I ride. DCT is a smart transmission that learns your riding habits. Honda did a superb job on it. This DCT is not for everyone....period. I will never go back to manual. Honda will never stop the DCT. I am betting on it.

I’ve been riding for many years on many bikes. One thing I’ve learned about using DCT (Africa Twin) is that’s it’s a Dual Clutch Transmission, not an automatic. Using it to its full potential requires experience and skills that are unique and dissimilar to the typical automatic in a car. It would be interesting to hear if others feel the same.

Agree with u and also the reason why i changed back to a manual after only owning a dct for a short time. Im not pretending to be an expert at manual but slow speed with dct is horrible (for me) i couldnt get used to not having a clutch to feather. On my manual i can just clutch/throttle/rear break and do slow speed traffic all day, on a dct all i could do was put my foot down. I know its a me problem and i know people get good at dct slow speed, but if u go into dct thinking its easy or easier, not for slow speed it is..
@someguy9520
@someguy9520 Жыл бұрын
But you can still use the rear brake with the dct for slow speed stuff isnt that right? But agree. My buddy and me tried the nt1100 with dct and it was a very weird and rough transmission for low speed. And touring mode lets the engine lug to hell and back. Even when going uphill and giving lots of throttle it would just stay in 5th and vibrate like mad In sport mode it didn't wanna shift, just rev and rev

My better half bought a Rebel 1100 with DCT, which i sorta gained. Changing gears with the paddles makes it much more fun to ride, and I added a Vance n Hines which woke it up considerably. The DCT in Auto "Standard" or "Rain" mode definetely seeks gears too eatly, and even in these modes you can paddle shift. In "Sports" manual mode it's hilarious!
@adamusher
@adamusher Жыл бұрын
Most DCTs have a learning electronic control unit. My wife drives my DCT turbo car a lot, and funny enough it shifts like a grandmother (which she is) is driving it in normal mode. Sports mode remembers how I drive it. Every so often I get in it, select normal mode, and rip the crap out of it. Use the paddle shifters, use the gear shift and generally just mess with the "learning" aspect. It stops it from basically defaulting to eco mode in everything it does. Because left in normal mode, and driven conservatively, that's exactly what happens. It ends up driving like it's in eco. Which is the most uninspiring drive for a hot turbo hatch. That learning aspect is super annoying. It leads to symptoms that feel like a major gearbox problem, but turns out it's just confused after she's driven it for week, and I drive it just once. A good thrashing for 20 mins, and it seems to completely change characteristic again. I had a mate ride the DCT Honda and proclaim it utter shit. Said it just tries to get to 6th gear every time he accelerated. So uninspiring. I asked if he tried different modes. Didn't get a coherent answer. Just more "Honda are shit, my KTM with 11 quadrillionty HP is so much better blah blah" comments.

There's lots to like about the new Goldwing, but it's not for everyone. 800+ lbs is a lot, even if much of it is down low. Also there's lots of great bikes out there for much less cost. I own a BMW R-1150-RS which can best be described as a Sport-Tourer. It has a quarter-fairing that isn't so massive that I can't lower the windscreen to increase the breeze on a hot day. I have BMW System Cases that carry a lot, but are readily removable for when they're not needed. ABS with Linked solenoid assisted brakes have always provided more braking than I've ever needed. It's seat is height-adjustable and comfortable for all-day rides. At 545 lbs it handles well on twisting back roads, and the motor has plenty of torque and HP. I bought it for $5,500 Cdn used 3 years ago with super low mileage. (This is my second R-1150-RS). It's been totally reliable, and easy to do all the routine maintenance on. The newer BMW's offer lots of options such as quick shifting transmissions and shift-cam engines, typically for significantly less than a Goldwing, unless you opt for their 6-cyinder models. Point is there's lots of great options that can bring you joy, whether its backroad blasting, or crossing the continent.

I'm a long time GW owner of the previous model. Can't wait to upgrade to this latest model. Saving up for it because yes, it's pricy.. but also definitely worth it. 15 years on V-twin cruisers before I went to the GW and these Hondas are just so comfortable with the performance I don't miss the V-twin as much. Go and ride one and you'll see. But the BIG difference is in any distance ride. Vastly reduced riding fatigue.

Switched from a K1600GTL to a white DCT Tour last year, mainly because my wife likes the passenger accommodations. I had planned to hang on to both bikes, but over time the Goldwing turned out to be so great, a blast to ride, and it’s advantages over the K in many areas became evident, that I sold the K. I made some mods for LD touring: Swapped the seat for a Corbin because it sets me 2” further back to fit my 6’5” self and I sit in more of a sport touring position. Swapped the windscreen for a lightly tinted Klock Werks recurve. I added a pair of Clearwater Erica front auxillary lights, cowl lights lights and side case rear lights from Pathfinder LED, highway pegs, a BT Moto CMU remap, and other minor bits. I’m touring across the U.S on it next month.

I purchased a brand new 2006 Goldwing in all black and it was a fabulous bike. I had Valkyries for 10 years before purchasing the wing . Valkyries were the naked wing and also a very good motorcycle. I wanted all the goodies so I moved up. More comfort from the suspension , cruise , brakes , stereo was decent when you plugged in a good headset . A road eater and could haul @$$ ! I worked as an engineer in corporate America and like most companies started down sizing so I was given more work every year. Sixty hours a week and it took all of my riding time away so regretfully I sold it a couple years later . I retired and moved to another state and after all these years I long for the freedom of riding . I will be buying a new wing shortly and a Harley Fatboy or Street glide just for the visceral sound of the pipes . Ride safe !

On the DCT: it is brilliant but takes a lot of practice to master on a bike this size. Rain mode for in town and slow speed gives you the finesse to feel confident. If you do a test ride in Sport mode you may miss experiencing what is an exceptional motorbike that doesn't get the credit it deserves for being able to commute and tour all year round, in both comfort and style, with luggage.

I’ve had the ‘21 DCT Tour since new. I’ve ridden it 44,000 km. Good bike with a few shortcomings in my opinion. The stock seat is not very comfortable on long rides. After about 40 minutes, I’d be squirming and then often standing on the pegs to relieve butt discomfort after that. I recently upgraded to an “Ultimate Seat”. Still not enough time on it to give an educated impression, although at first blush, it’s more comfortable than stock and looks better on the bike. Initially it felt like I had upgraded my suspension. I bought the 2021 model for the bigger trunk, but the side cases are still quite small. You can buy doors from Corbin that provide more capacity, but they are expensive, need to be painted to match your bike and are very vulnerable to damage if the bike falls over, even at a standstill. And it’s not a question of if, but when that will happen. The DCT works well in most conditions, but in town, it’s not perfect. Luckily they’ve given us the option to shift it manually with paddle shifters, for those times when that suits the situation better. And I wish they could do something to reduce the clutch cage noise. At idle, that rattling noise, to me, is annoying. I would prefer to just hear the purr of the engine. On a positive note, Honda makes reliable bikes. I’ve had no issues with the bike so far. I did an 11,000 km trip with it in 2023, two up and towing a 450 pound trailer. It handled mountain passes like a boss. And it’ll go 450 km, (more than 250 miles), on a tank of gas. That’s plenty. You’ll want get off to stretch your legs and rest your butt before then anyway. Lots money for a bike, for sure. But they hold their value well. Just buy the damn bike! 😊 Oh, and GoldStrike sells a nice set of highway pegs for both the rider and passenger. They are relatively easy to install, look great and are good quality. I use mine often.

I test rode this in 2018 when it first came out. I'm a shorter guy with the inseam of a Hobbit. it was extremely manageable and has only gotten better in the past few years. Had a 2014 CTX700 dct. It was fine, but he DCT was a bit rough, and the bike was underpowered for it's weight. The goldwing took all the lessons there and made it great. I did end up getting the rebel 1100 DCT in the interim (until I win the lottery or whatnot). The DCT on it is excellent, and the manual versions do really well too.

Great review. I have the 2023 DCT Tour. Minor note there is a Goldstrike riding peg that sits in a great spot for long legs. You're right about the weight all sitting super low; incredible how manageable it is for the weight. I'd also highlight how dramatic a change the riding modes are with the DCT. In Sport it stays low in the gears and high in the revs way longer than you'd anticipate and really wants to run.

I camp send I get all the gear I need in the top box and side boxes. Two negatives are range and CarPlays inability to work without a helmet comm. I use a comm so that’s not the problem but on long rides the battery dies and then CarPlay fails. I also have the 2021 GS Adventure and its tank capacity is fantastic. As usual, your high-spirited review has brought the video to yet another level of excitement. I do own a '22 DCT GW and it is the most comfortable bike for long distance touring hands down. The air pocket where I sit is nicely protected and the protection alleviates the rider from road stress quite a bit. In the front, if you do want some wind, you can pop up the air-vent foil (on the top of the dash) to direct a gentle amount of wind into your face. Besides the joy of riding provided by the linear torque, the flat-6 does protrude out slightly and prevents me from too much leaning when negotiating curves.

I bought a 2023 Goldwing, non Tour, non DCT model that is still available here in Canada. My complaints are as follows: 1) fuel tank is too small and it requires you to fill it slowly or else it spits back up you. When riding on a long trip I like to get the tank as full as possible, on this bike it is a PITA. 2) Center stand should be standard equipment on all models at this price point. 3) Luggage bags have flimsy doors that require a good slam or else they do not close properly, they feel budget and cheap. 4) Hand grip heaters do not get as hot as say an Oxford brand aftermarket set do. 5) Heated seat should be standard on all models. 6) The matt finish of the "bagger" model is a pain to keep clean and it never really looks good in my opinion but is the only paint available on this model. 7) Cruise control, when you accelerate briefly while cruise is on, and then let it return to the set speed, the speed dips below the set speed, then accelerates back to the set point. 8) Sport Mode is ridiculous due to the snatchy throttle and power this engine makes. If you crank it up from a stand still and are not prepared it will yank your arms out of the sockets. Things I like; 1) It is super comfortable to ride, 8 hours (most time spent so far) riding a day is easy. Seating position is great, seat is the perfect blend of support and comfort for me. 2) Low speed handling is remarkable for a bike of any weight, let alone one this heavy. Even with a manual it is easy to ride super slow and maneuver in tight spaces. 3) It is not that bad on fuel, just wish it had a larger tank. 4) Sounds good, that flat six makes a nice, civilized noise, that conveys the power subtly 5) Instrumentation and displays are excellent. I prefer old school analogue speedo and tach. 6) Night lighting is excellent, dash and controls all are backlit nicely and look classy. Some of my gripes are a matter of personal preference, your mileage may vary. To give you some sort of idea of my bike history I have owned a Kawasaki Vulcan, and a Suzuki V Strom( still have the Suzuki) . Would I recommend the Goldwing? Maybe. Would I buy it again if given a do over? No.

A Rolls Royce 😂😂😂 I really love the GW, but it’s way far to come close to a Rolls Royce finition. I will more likely say a Mercedes Classe E, and the K1600 an Audi RS6. And for sure, Trail bikes are more comfortable for long ride with a better legs position and long travel suspensions. I hate to admit that as I don’t like Trail motorcycle and prefer the GW or the K1600 with a little advantage for the GW.

Owned a Goldwing, some things never change: Plastic on Plastic on Plastic, and the luggage compartments designs leave a lot to be desired. Passenger has to get off to get in the trunk, and get ready to cram stuff in the side bags and quickly jam them shut before cargo falls out. Don’t forget about those super comfortable foot pegs on long road trips. Glad my Goldwing is in the past, but happy for those that enjoy them.

Had a 2021 Goldwing Bagger from new, covered 12k miles. I agree slow manoeuvres can be tricky, use rain mode makes it easier. You can do full lock slow turns with it. In sports mode it’s fantastic with 170nm torque at 4800 revs. Off the mark your an feel the front wheel very neatly lift. Not much can keep with it off the mark. I completed Rospa Gold and IAM 1st on this bike so is capable. You can get it over around bends and it is planted. This is a one off bike nothing like it, not even a K1600 which feel agricultural compares to the Wing. I never could see me buying one, but love the bagger version as it’s like a sports tourer. The main grip is no auto suspension available for the bagger version. You need to manually turn the very restrictive pre load by hand that has 34 clicks. Comes standard set to 11 clicks which is for a 11st person I am 15st and got it set to 22 for a more performance setting which doesn’t bottom out over bumps. I am looking for a second bike, my current bike makes it a tough tasks because it’s so good. Safe riding 👍🏼

I wish the bagger had a heated seat. Where I live we get if we are lucky a 6 and sometime 7 month riding season and both ends of it can be quite cool. Most of my riding is by myself and have not the need for the trunk plus I do not wish to pay for something I do not need in order to have a warm caboose. Otherwise I have demoed both the bagger and the tour, with and without the DCT and both are very nice - I'd buy the DCT and the bagger (with a heated seat)....were it available. Currently ride a challenger but at 71 I really could use a reverse hear to help manage the mass which the challenger does not have.

Very true, it depends what you want in a tourer. If you want ultra confinement and smoothness go for the Wing, if you want a bit more of an aggressive tourer to go faster than 115mph go for the K1600B. Following the test rides I went for the refinement, but is of course subjective

The new Goldwing now looks just as good and in many ways better than the Yamaha FJR1300. Why has Suzuki not put their wonderful Hayabusa engine with 16 titanium valves and knife edged crankshaft, into a touring bike with shaft drive, and an ovrerdrive gear? The Hayabusa needs a touring model, to match the Kawasaki Concours 1400 and FJR1300.

I can not believe, how did you manage to get only 200 miles from a fuel tank? What were you doing? Racing at top speed or what? This is a touring bike and if you are riding normally, you can get an easy 300 miles... This is my 3rd Goldwing and this is the most fuel-efficient bike ever made. I've even managed to achieve 3.9 liters per 100km...520 km from a 21-liter tank... Riding this within the speed limit is unmatchable with any bike with half of its engine capacity and weight...

Yes it has a low centre of gravity, I can ride mine at a very slow walking pace, no problems in traffic, around town etc. However, the weight WILL bite you in the ass sooner or later. Everyone who has ridden mine has dropped it, there's a reason they come with factory engine and rear body crash bars. Tbh, I'm tired of it, it's perfect but dull and demands too much constant attention. I have a big twin Harley which seems light by comparison and my go to bike for riding fun is a 310cc Zontes.

I'm 5'8" and the wide seat means I'm almost tippy towing at the lights. The weight is super low so you can balance with one foot but 5'3.5" might be a stretch. Once moving it is obviously a dream so you would be fine but sit on a stationary one and balance it. It is great but it is also one hell of a lump.

Bike is great but panniers/hard bags are laughable and seen bigger handbags so bit pathetic for 2 up long tours. Suspension is great but makes the ride a bit stale as it doesn't give the feedback so is trade off for being smooth. On sport mode is good and can hustle along but not impressive if your used to maybe sport tourers. Is a great bike but a bit flat line as does it all good but just a bit vanila or plain I thought. The dash is great though and loads of information and easy to see what you need. I do laugh everytime I think of the pannier bags and trying to get 10 to 14 days worth of touring essentials for 2 people on it though. Honda really dropped the ball with that for me, but each to own :)

Thank you so much for this video you did. Can you help me get my message below to Honda Motorcycles? Reaching them has proved shockingly impossible for me though I'm still trying. While I'm not yet a GW owner/rider...yet, I'm certainly in love with the GW, especially the DCT-Tour. Recently I've come across two problems that unsuspecting GW riders have been contending with and I want to know if Honda can mitigate these two problems through future design modifications. Problem number one is the eventual premature failure of the DCT clutch system experienced by riders who continuously ride the GW DCT-Tour at low enough speeds to have the clutch engage/disengage (and what lies in between this) actuation repeat itself too frequently to its early destruction. I hope Honda will educate future buyers of the GW DCT-Tour about this type of clutch-wrecking riding style since such damage will not be covered by warranty. What I would like to know as a potential buyer is "Can/will Honda be able to modify the DCT system to overcome this inherent weakness of being overworked at the slow speed regimes involving the engage/disengage engine speeds of 1,000 to 1,500 rpm range (am I correct about that rpm range)?" Problem number two is the premature wearing-out of the front shock absorber's bumper due to how close the shock absorbing strut gets/stays when weight (of rider or more) is placed on the bike...there just isn't any useful strut-travel space left. I see too many complains about the shocks being too soft and hitting the bumper too much, too frequently unless the roads are blemish-free. I'm worried that in my part of the world (Nigeria) where tarred roads of developed urban areas are 90% riddled with bump-rich blemishes and heavy, crawl-pace traffic jams are a daily challenge, owning a GW DCT-Tour will be incredibly costly in terms of repeated front strut bumper and clutch replacements. What is Honda doing about these unresolved issues?
