Yes two different issues here - startup it is only running on 2, one of your CDI's runs the Tacho/rev counter - check the plugs but quite likely either you have a cdi or a pickup on the way out, ticking is cam chain slap, it is possible your idle circuits need a clean, I just went through this with mine and mine turned out to be a blockage in the fuel feed pipe to the carbs (little filters behind the float needle seats were clogged) made mine tick like crazy and stopped ticking after I cleaned them out. Because of the rev counter suddenly working and you can hear the bike tip onto 4 cylinders when that happens - I would say you have two separate issues to track down

Sounds like the tappets are knocking . I have a 1984 40 year old Magna and 40 Yr old sabre. I'm lucky not to have the same problem !

@hughhistory7478 I adjusted the valves but knocking is still there. I was told on the forum that it's the chain tensioner.

Yes it could be the cam chain tensioner that's worn out. They also had worn cam problems from lack of oil getting to the rear cylinders when used too much at low revs under 3000 to 2000 for long periods so the oil didn't get to circulate properly. My sabre is starting to show engine override at high speed and acceleration through 4th /5th . And top end over 100mph. I'm hoping that it's worn clutch plates but these bikes had th common cam problem . An oil extra feeder to the heads was invented to screw on inside the oil filter thread ( external ) with two pipes that went up to the head . I think there's only two people making them in USA . But you will prob have to do the cam chain tensioners first if it is that ?

It seems that is working on 2 cylinders, that’s why the tachometer is not working, because one of the cdi boxes feeds the tachometer

A 40 year old bike with unknown valve train maintenance and an idle speed that is set way too low. Big deal.
