Great video.. I live in the US. I purchased a new monkey in July 2020 have taken a 310 mile trip and a 470 mile trip as well as general local riding. I have just under 2000 miles already. I agree the chain does seem to stretch more than I would expect. I have gotten about 110 miles to the gallon riding varying terrain. I also agree that the suspension is a little weak. In general I love the bike it makes me feel like a kid again.

I expect the OEM chain is knackered because the rear suspension is fully compressing so much and being stretched to the max so much. I read that there is a max rider weight of 110kg on standard suspension. You probably are outside what it was designed for. No offence. Great bikes tho.

Nice review. Another annoying issue with this engine (MSX125 Grom too) is the premature wear (around 2,000 miles or 3,200 kilometers) of the cam chain button. Otherwise, it's a fun little bike.

I agree, my monkey is the best bike bike i've owned for smiles per mile (i've owned a lot of all sizes). When you say 'Honda monkey cycle' I just think of a womans menstrual cycle and laugh my head off because this bike really has no tantrums or complications and is far cheaper to run! Wey hey ;-) I get 200mpg giving it full beans everywhere. I also put a rack on the back of my campervan and now can take it with me for mega fun trips. AWESOME. No need to do all the silly upgrades like exhaust and intake, its a 125 duh, but i did replace the throttle tube for a shorter twist on the wrist, front and rear suspension a must, tail tidy (make your own with 2 bits of angled steel easy), 14 tooth front sprocket £5 easy job for a little more top speed. The bollox. I am going to put knobblies on for some off roading. I swapped out the standard gear lever linkage system for a direct lever £20 it is better but still neutral can be hard to find first time. I would suggest cleaning the oil spinner filter and gauze before the recommended 8000 miles, i did mine at 1200 miles and the gauze was half full of crap, DIY job i would say if you have some basic tools (again utube vids available for this).

If you change the rear and front suspension it will take 19stone. I am 18 stone, i put hagon rear shocks on £140, i replaced the front springs with hyperpro's £110 (it was quite a job to do front springs but there is a utube vid to watch and you really need a special tool). I love these monkeys! Smiles per mile more than any bike ive ridden, very capable bike.

I javent bought one yet..I live in a shared house with a small carpark outfront..some lighting from the street...what security measures would you suggest?
@HelmetHead Жыл бұрын
I’d use a heavy duty chain on the rear wheel ideally chained to a grounding point. Plus a disk lock on the front and a cover over the bike. The most important thing is making it hard to steal 😉👍

Thank you just an idea one of the other housemates has a motorcycle covered over and chained..he rarely uses it...he may agree to me using my Kryptonite U bolt attaching both bikes together to save putting a ground anchor in.

What kind of basic upkeep maintenance have you done on it in 900 miles? I'm about to hit 500 and wondering if I should be doing anything (this is my first motorcycle).
@HelmetHead3 жыл бұрын
Hello the bike is super easy to look after. First oil change at 600mile and its worth checking your chain and adjusting if needed. After that Oil change ever 1000miles and this will really help look after your engine. Oil filter change after 8000miles. This is how I look after my bike hope that helps. 😉 Ride safe 👍

you mentioned a couple hundred quid for shocks. where and what brand are you speaking of? i ask because I've been looking for shocks for my Monkey and all of the shocks I can find that have good reviews are 400 plus per pair.
@HelmetHead4 жыл бұрын
Hello this is the sort of shocks I was talking about www.ebay.co.uk/itm/164361346432 But yes a good branded pair is £400+
@ianm84293 жыл бұрын
Hagon shocks are good £140. I looked at all options and these have proved really good value and on the softest setting carry me a 17stone bloke easily. The front springs need doing as well, Hyperpro springs £110 i can recommend but this is not a trivial job for DIY, but possible though as i did it.

Hi Seymour Buts - it's Big Rodders in Ireland. I'm 6ft 3inches and weight about 200lbs. I find it very comfortable and the only small bike I can fit. Mirror extentions are essential if you want to see more than your elbows. I'm averaging 147mpg and got 200 miles out of a tankfull before it ran out of fuel. It is made in Thailand, not Japan. Quality is exquisite. Comfortable cruising speed is in the low 50s and top speed attained was a very brief 70. It will pull top gear strongly at 30mph within City limits, something I value. If you want to cruise effortlessly at greater speeds then buy something else. I changed the oil and cleaned the filter at 600 miles and now replace oil every 1000 miles. Chain stretch or frustration with the gear change has not been an issue for me. I fitted a carrier and a 25L topbox but the carrier cracked, presumably from the box vibrating so don't overload the carrier. Now let me get back to Monkeying about!

@@deonogorman928 It did feel like a massive ride but the 180miles included stopping loads for filming plus the well over weighted ruck sack. As a one off I'd happily do 310miles but only once 😂🤣 to buy the a well priced bike 👍.
