The dealer let you down TAYM, he sent you out without giving you a five minute overview of DCT and then you would have experienced a very different motorcycle. I am on my third DCT and love the system to bits. As you may recall I now have the NT and it a very capable bike and folk should not be put off by your experience. Use S1 as a minimum and the bike comes alive, by time you get to S3 it is very sporty. I will be making some videos on my NT over next few weeks and you have given me food for thought on what I should cover. Thanks for this review it has been very interesting👍

Just watched your review with sadness TAYM on the Honda NT1100 DCT,due to the dealer not explaining how to operate the automatic ride system you clearly didn’t have a great experience & i sense this has put you off. Most of us that own a Honda bike with DCT love them & wouldn’t go back to clutch and gears,chin up Mate as it’s worth another shot riding one when you know what your doing and you’ll see things in a different light hopefully. In terms of a suitable winter ride the NC750x DCT would take some beating.

Great review and you conveyed what it feels like at first if you're a newcomer to DCT, and did that better than many videos I've watched. I'm glad you sussed out the paddles work anytime before the end - like paddles on automatic cars if you have them. I know quite a bit about this bike because I considered it seriously for a bit until I went in and saw it in the same Lings and was completely shocked how huge it is. It's much bigger than it appears in videos for some reason. It's Africa Twin size (of course!) i.e. the biggest. Nearly all reviewers end up liking DCT after not liking it for the first hour or two. And they all seem to end up keeping it in Sports mode (S1) for around town and back to the mode you were in for longer distance straight roads. Personally I don't think this is the bike for people who want to have a bit of a naughty feel around B roads like you do, as do I !

What a wonderful way to wake up, as I am off to get Expresso inspected (MOT) I think you guys call it. I would call that my long distance/ inclement weather bike. Some things do need to get changed with this one. Shaft is an absolute and what if they take the button off the handle bars and put a shift lever on the left foot? And rather then pushing a button. Then to ensure you don't switch gears by mistake, they could put a lever on the left hand that you pull in and use the foot to shift. Then it would be perfect! 😂 Love you like a brother! Next time you test ride something with adjustable suspension, ask the dealer to set it up for you. You'll have to get on and off the bike a few times while they make the measurements. Assuming you're road testing and will be taking it easy, you'll want anywhere from 25% to 35% rider sag (i.e. with you and all your gear on the bike, as if you're riding). Don't worry too much about the static sag, you can't be swapping springs on demo bikes :( Depending on what is and isn't adjustable, the numbers won't be exact, but the important part is the back matching the front. If it has damping adjustment, and again assuming easygoing street riding, I would open compression damping right up and take the bounce out with rebound. You test by exercising the suspension. Push down and release. It should come back up, peak and settle with no bounce. If it comes up a second time after settling down you need more damping. The criterion is the same front and back, but your technique will differ. The back is obvious, for the front - hold down the front brake and push along the fork axis. If you want a bit of compression damping for good measure, get it to where rebound damping allows just a bit of bounce (say it settles down and rises back up) and take that last bit out with compression damping. Keeping that minimal will let the springs absorb most bumps rather than passing them up through the dampers into the frame and to your body. It takes 15 minutes to set all this up and it's absolutely worth doing both for you and for them because it will give you a true impression of what the bike is like at its best. NOT doing that is why so many reviewers criticise the CB1000R as being "soft", when in reality it was most likely simply set up for someone else.
@TAYM
@TAYM Жыл бұрын
Marvellous , thank you😁 would this work for the routes I test bikes on 🤔 for example, this ride I tried fast smooth twisties, fast dual carriageways, the wash board road (which is exactly what it says, heavily damaged by the hgvs (it’s used as overspill for the port and the bridge)), the Suffolk road which is a back road with potholes, bumps and lumps, gravel and mud. Would it need to be set for each scenario? 😁 thank you 😊
@233kosta
@233kosta Жыл бұрын
@@TAYM I mean it's a compromise... It's also mostly down to your riding style and how much you're looking to push the bike. Softening the springs is an absolute must for bumpier roads and it doesn't much hurt cornering (in fact not at all, I softened the back of my 650R to match the front and now powering out of corners feels better than when the back was too stiff), but under aggressive riding (hard on power, hard on brakes) you run the risk of bottoming out (which is bad). This is why track setups tend to run more preload, perhaps stiffer springs too. But there aren't really any pot holes to worry about there. Generally speaking, the above spring settings should be good for most street riding. Depending on the bike, you might be better off matching back and front on relative sag (rider minus static) rather than absolute values (for instance my forks have a LOT of static sag and there's not a thing I can do about it without messing with springs and spacers, but when I sit on the forks only go down a little bit more). Once they're set to match your riding style you can just leave them there. Bro tip: Dave Moss makes extensive use of cable ties on forks to measure how much travel one is using. That provides a better basis for adjusting springs. The rebound damping stuff I mentioned is universal. It has one job and that's how you get it to do that job, BUT it's affected by everything else, so if you touch anything else you need to go back to it and make sure it's still right. Compression damping is the hard one to get just right because you can't really static test it. In principle its job is exactly the same as rebound - keep the wheels on the ground at all times. In practice though it's used in different ways. On track they use it extensively to control fork dive under hard braking, just slowing it right down. Using that setup on the street will knock your teeth out on the first pot hole, hence opening it up. I would rather run it most or all the way open, but that can send the front wheel bouncing up too high on sharper bumps, the best way I can think to do it is to start with the OEM settings and dial out all the harshness, until you're happy with how comfortable it feels. Fortunately there's no shortage of bumpy roads near you to test that on. If you reach a point where removing compression damping does nothing you've gone too far. At that point the setup should be suitable for most of what you're doing, but it also subject to a lot more pissing about twiddling knobs than the 15 minute initial job that gets done at the dealers'. If you're not going track speeds on yhe twisty roads it should work for those. The soft compression damping should work a treat on the washboard and as long as you're not trying to stoppie at the end of that dual carriageway you should be good there too. If the dealers have a suspension specialist, that person should be able to dial it all in for you and that's the best option. If not, get them to at least set the right sag for you, you need their help for that. The rest you can do yourself. Have fun out there!

You would have had a totally different experience if you’d known about the Sport Settings- its a completely different bike in S1,S2 or S3. In these settings the bike changes gear exactly where you would choose to. Shaft drive would have been perfect but the development costs would have been astronomical. I reckon the bike would have been nearer to £20k if they’d put a shaft on it. Don’t reckon Honda would sell half as many at that price point…

You've missed the use of Sport mode which transforms DCT! Before the Z900RS (which you and I have discussed before), I had an NC750X DCT. So it was the NT1100 that I tried when I realised the Z was SO naughty. But that was when I also tried Eggy and Ruby, my REs ,which I preferred (and bought) instead. Your findings on the NT are similar to mine. I really liked the NC and think it's far better suited to the DCT. You really should try one of those now. The Drive mode changes up so quickly for economy. Most owners use Sport mode instead (which doesn't use much more fuel anyway) and the bike responds so much better. The NT is the same and S is a better choice, but the engine is so much more responsive it's far 'twitchier'. The NC engine is softer and the bike is faster than it feels. I think DCT is far superior to manual although both are Honda-excellent. I didn't miss the DCT as much as I thought when I got the Z-RS. On the NC many models can have a foot-shift 'paddle' fitted which makes the DCT one of the best 'manual' bikes there is (imho). The NT is heavy as you said. I found it would be a motorway muncher, fair on A-roads, but for the B and back roads - too much. Sent you a picture of the giraffe. Love the big dog too! Ride safe.

Thanks JT😁 I can’t speak for others, but what I mean is that this bike has similar characteristics to other Hondas I have ridden. I could say it is similar to say other Kawasakis or Suzukis I’ve ridden but that would be a lie. 😁

Hmm well TAYM it doesn't look to bad , but really does nothing for me this one . DCT I think and even gadgets don't really interest me to much ,if I had all these bells and whistles with TFT screens I just would have it all in one setting and not ever change it 😁getting to old I reckon it's all left me behind I think! although I have never tried anything in the newer vain I must admit .It really seems to upshift way to quickly not sure why that would be , it seemed to be really laboring at times maybe if one was to give it a handful it would hold the gears longer but not liking the way it was working really not for me 😉good watch though 👌👍

By not releasing the NT in North America, is Honda trying to manufacture scarcity or resentment? Seriously though, being in the demographic wanting a reasonably priced, reasonably appointed “pipe ‘n slippers” touring bike, it would be interesting to hear Honda’s reasoning for keeping this model away from a hungry marketplace.
@TAYM
@TAYM Жыл бұрын
I’ve never understood why manufacturers supply different models to different demographics. I mean, they are producing them anyway🤔 I get that emissions might be an issue in some cases but not many. I guess it is purely to manipulate the market as you have alluded to😁 thanks WW 😁
