Good video, helped me change the transmission fluid. The only part I wish you showed was where the fluid should be on the dipstick after refill. Because of the way the dipstick is angled, the "back" of the stick was showing overfill for me, but the front (where the "Hot" was printed with the two holes) had the fluid a few centimeters below the bottom Hot mark after running my engine for 5 minutes. I was too concerned about overfilling to add more fluid at first, and there was some rough shifting when the engine was colder. When I finally topped-off the fluid to above the bottom "Hot" hole, no more rough shifting.

The washer is a crush washer - not a regular steel washer. It gets crushed when you put the bolt back on, torqued to specs, sealing the plug to the transmission case. Using an already crushed washer will reduce the sealing capability everytime its reused. This goes for the oil pan bolt too. Crush washers are made of Al or Cu. Al washers for Al cases and CU washers for iron cases.

Good advice. I know reusing the washer is controversial. I would lean on using a new washer too.

@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 2 жыл бұрын
If the ATF has never been changed, you may just want to keep it that way, if it’s running fine. Some have said, changing out the fluid at this time may loosen deposits that will float around and plug up elsewhere to cause problems. You may want to try a 1x change if you wish.

I have a old 2002 Odyssey clunking into 2nd and 3rd gear. I decided to use synthetic Valvoline MaxLife ATF. I'm going to do three or four flushes within one month. As recommended by professionals. Odyssey recalled many Vans and had to replace the transmissions but not all of them got replaced. It's a piece of junk but according to the experts if you change the fluid every 10,000 miles you can increase the miles to 300k. And one guy said that he had Honda Accord and he got 400 k miles changing synthetic oil every 10k
@dannybryant6873
@dannybryant6873 5 ай бұрын
On the 06 Odyssey the correct amount is around 3.3 quarts. The correct fill plug would be a bad idea because it is about impossible to get to, and it is filthy down there. Use the dipstick. The dipstick tube is very small. I use a Dollar General turkey baster ($2) to access the tube. And a bigger funnel. And take your time, pour very slowly. I purchased a short torque wrench as a long one hits the floor too soon. I torque to 30 ft-lbs. I see below a spec of 36. I'm not sure which is correct, but we are dealing with aluminum (soft metal). You are probably only changing one third of the oil. So do it every oil change until the fluid comes out clean.

@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 2 жыл бұрын
Normally, it would drain out a bit more than 3 quarts. If only 2.5 drains out, that’s fine as long as the dipstick ready is full. Since this is your first time, I would do another one a week or so later. It’s a 9 quart system, so changing it 1X (3 quarts) is sort of like 1/3 fresh fluid - keeping the math simple.

Well done. What concerns me in all of these videos is that only a portion of the ATF is actually changed. Much more old fluid remains inside the trans. How to get that all out? Some say do this like 2-3 times. Geeze. that's a lot of work and fluid. I wonder what the dealership does?

Honda's TSB does call for 3x drain &I fill, when there's an issue. Normal paid ATF "change" is just 1x. Yes, 3x is a lot of work and sort of a waste of good fluid. IMO if one does regular (1x) changes, every 20-30k miles, the ATF should be rather clean.

See if the fluid is dark and have a burnt smell. If it still looks good, reddish in color, maybe just do a 1X change. If it's dark, you may want to do a 1X change. See if the transmission slips. If not, then do another. If the transmission does slips, then you don't want to do anymore changes. Sometimes the gunk in the transmission help keep things together and working. Changing the fluid can loosen things up and create a situation-issue when none exisited before. I assume the Ody shifts fine now.

Andrew, great video. Do you ever change the atf filter or do a flush?
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Flushing a Honda automatic transmission is not recommended, as some have said flushing will loosen up the "bad stuff" and start to circulated it around. So drain & fill is best for a Honda automatic transmission. As for the ATF filer, that would require more, tools, arm strength, etc. I would not consider that "routine" maintenance. I'm aiming this video for those that are new to show how easy this task is to DIY, and don't want to branch out to maintenance that require a bit more skill. Personally, this most likely will be my last minivan (and have no plan to change the ATF filter). I do want it to last a long time, but in some ways not "that long." I don't need it to run 300k miles. At some point, it"s time for a new vehicle, with newer safety tech. The main purpose of a minivan is to carry family safely.

Yes, there is the transmission filter. Changing it requires additional skills, tools, and arm strength. I have no plan to change it for two reasons. 1. I bought my Odyssey new, and been changing the ATF regularly, so I like to think it's pretty clean. 2. At some point, I will need to replace an aging vehicle with something newer. This is not to say I don't want my cars to last. More like I have no plan to run it for 20 years. It's time for a new, safer car with more safety tech. This is my primary family vehicle, so safety is important. That's just my view. There are videos on how to change the AT Filter on youtube if you wish to change yours.

@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 3 жыл бұрын
If you don't know this history and guess the ATF has never been changed, I would do a 3X replacement. 1X first and see how it goes. If everything goes well after a few weeks, then do a 2X. In a 9 quart system, the idea is 33% each time = ~100%. Not exactly because there's the old fluid, but close enough. Honda's TSB does recommend the 3X method. Or you may also want to consider how long you wish to keep your Ody. Sometimes, fluid replacement will "loosen" up things that float around, and the clog somewhere else, and cause damage. Meaning if you are at 150K or 175K miles and never been changed, and runs perfect, I may just ride it out and not change it. IMO.

Since your 2016 Ody is not driven much, I would not change it, even after 3 years. If you continue at this same rate, maybe consider it in 6 years. Check the color of the ATF. If it still looks red/pink, it's still good. If it's brown in color, it's time for a drain & fill. You may want to take a sample now as a baseline (take a pic of the fluid on a white paper towel) and compare it 3 years later.

Yes, if you are doing this more than one time, you should not only run the engine, but drive it around, preferably let the torque converter engage, such as hwy speed, so there will be fluid exchange between new and old. Or just do this again as next weekend's project, after a week of driving.

Do you recommend several times draining in and out? Luke several flushed to take all the oil out of the converter etc....

Depending on the age, and service history. Did you buy yours used with no service history? Yes, I would do a drain & fill a few times, no more than 3X. It's a 9 quart system. Each time you will replace 3. So 3 X 3 =9 to keep the math simple. It's what Honda recommend too. It will not be 100% new ATF, but close enough. Lastly, depending on how old it is, sometimes "too clean" of a fluid may not be good as it "loosen" too much of the junk, and then start to float it around.

Yes, you can replace the fuel filter on a Honda Civic for example. Some cars recommend replacing as soon as 30k miles. The fuel filter on the Odyssey is in the tank, so therefore not serviceable by the average person.

Hi Andrew thanks for the informative video. Sorry I am not handy my understanding of terminologies are not much. When you replied in another comment “drain and fill 2x” does it mean first, drain all the old ATF then put in 3 bottles of those new ATF while the drain plug is out so it continues to drain out the new ATF so it’s like washing the engine? Then after that second drain plug the drain hole and put in 3 new ATF to complete the drain and fill process. Is this right? If it is then wasting 3 new ATFs are normal part of the process? So I need to have 6 new ATF bottles on hand before I start?
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 5 жыл бұрын
To keep the math easy, the entire transmission holds 9 quarts of ATF. Each time you drain and replace, only 3 quarts will drain out. So that's 33% with new ATF. 2x mean your repeat this 2 times. Complete it once, drive around (maybe for a week?) and complete drain and fill another time to get 66% replaced. Honda's TSB (technical service bulletin actually recommend 3x. 33%+33%+33%=almost 100%. Yes, there's a bit of "wasting." I'm ok with that if one dispose the fluid properly. I change my ATF regularly so it's not that dirty. So IMO 2x is enough for me. Never run the engine with the drain open. Never. Yes, it will push out more fluid, but will also run dry, and damage the transmission. Complete one time, tighten the bolt. And repeat again. Some owners just do 1x every other oil change. And some will do 3x every 40,000 miles. It's up to you.

Decent video - a couple things though: 1) do your torque wrench a favor and use a proper breaker bar for original loosening of the bolt. And get your torque wrench recalibrated. 2) for gods sake replace your crush washer and follow torque specifications for retightening the bolt You're overtightening the hell out of the bolt at 3:55 trying to get a seal with the old, flattened washer. You might get away with that for a while but you're stressing the threads on the bolt and (worse) the transmission housing.

@@andrewwang3900 👍 Your car and wallet thank you. I had a 2005 Ody that I took back to the dealer service dept for an oil change once, I swear one of the techs used an impact wrench to put the plug back in. Way over spec. Took a superhuman effort to get it off next time I did a change, I swear I thought I was going to yank the whole car off the jackstands just getting the dang oil plug off. Amazed that the threads on the oil pan remained intact. Anyway, rock on with the DIY auto maintenance and videos 👍

That happened to me once too when I went to the dealership for an oil change. The plug was on so tight, that I could not loosen it. It must have been an impact wrench. Had to take it to an independent mechanic to get it off. Bolt ended up stripped. Been DIY since.

Hi, Just purchased 2013 Odyssey with 80K, The previous one owner of the car told me he never changed the ATF, is it risky to change it at 80K?
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 5 жыл бұрын
I would change it 1X, and go from there. 80k miles isn't that many miles. If it was 120k or 160k for the first time, there may be some risk with "loosening" up stuff in the transmission, only to float to elsewhere, and clog it up.

Use a funnel and drain it slowly. It’s tedious and slow but works well.

What is the size of the crush washer?

I don’t know off hand. If you are going to replace it, I would check with the dealer to make sure not only on the size, but the exact material of the washer.

Hi Andrew, I have a 2016 Honda Odyssey, how many quarts of transmission oil it takes? Drain and fill.
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 6 жыл бұрын
About 3.3 to 3.5 quarts with each drain & fill. I would add 3 quarts to start, then adjust using the dip stick. So buy 4 quarts.

Does it matter if the engine is cold or warm? And is it necessary to jack it up?
@andrewwang3900
@andrewwang3900 5 жыл бұрын
Better with a cold engine (car) so you don't get burn. Is it necessary to jack up the car? Yes, so you can see and there is space for better leverage. No, if you can feel your way to loosen the drain bolt.

My tools are "spotless" because I wipe them clean after use, to keep the tool box clean. I don't use my tools often. This ATF change for example, once every 2.5 years maybe. As for my hands being clean? Rubber gloves. My phone was used to make this video, and I don't want to touch it with a dirty hand.
