I was inspired by your channel to purchase a 21 SE AWD Pilot. We needed the extra space that the pilot provides but was disappointed to lose ground clearance. Regardless, since they are built on the same platform I felt it would do whatever I needed it to do, plus I lifted it 2" to allow for bigger tires to gain some clearance. I have been very happy with the vehicle, the AWD is amazing; I almost prefer it to the beefed up LSD 4x4 system on my R50 Pathfinder. It's awesome that you got to 75K without any issues. I somehow managed to blow my left rear shock at less than 4k. I may have been too aggressive on some bigger bumps or driven too fast on some long and very rough washboard roads. I'm not sure what happened but it's shot as are my left front lower ball joint and tie rod bushing. Unfortunately Honda didn't warrant the repair due to the lift. So be it, however, it's disappointing that they didn't step up to the plate to fix my vehicle when they are clearly trying to promote the utility of these vehicles as indicated by them reaching out directly to you and their involvement in events like the Rebelle Rally. I will continue to use it, as you do with your Passport, to reach very out of the way places. It's just unfortunate that Honda doesn't seem to want to fully back their vehicles when they get used for what they are advertised as being capable of handling.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
Interesting stuff! I offroad my Passport "as slow as possible, as fast as necessary", really good words to live by when a vehicle is geared well. I just completed Imogene pass on 7/8/2021 from the more technical side (Ouray, CO) and totally lived by those words. Our First gen Honda Pilots with the Honda 5 speed transmission had to use "momentum" on the rougher sections. My Passport and my friends 2021 Ridgeline just crawled it. this driving style will definitely prolong the life of your vehicle. Please check this out : instagram.com/p/CRJ1iEoAszp/? Now, I can't always drive slow. Going through wash board roads (Like you mentioned) will cause alot of abuse. I've driven down the death valleys racetrack playa at the 30K mile mark. It was a brutal 54 miles of unforgiving wash board roads. The youtube channel Edmunds did a video there. They took a Toyota Tacoma TRD offroad, Nissan Titan XD and a Honda Ridgeline out there. The struts in the Tacoma and Nissan blew all 4 shocks before finishing the trail, the Ridgeline still had all 4 intact. By the time the track was completed, the Ridgeline blew one strut. The Ridgeline is no where close to be advertised as an offroad vehicle like a Toyota Tacoma TRD offroad is. The thing is, all these vehicles will break when abused. The solutions for guys that don't want their Tacoma TRD offroads to blow shocks? They spend $55K to buy a Tacoma TRD Pro. Here's the edmunds episode: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYi8onifo7N6i68 I hope all this information helps. If the trail feels abusive, it is abusive. For washboards I use the "stay on top of them technique". I was driving through the racetrack playa at 40 MPH. Just be careful to not hit a deep rut while doing 40MPH. That happened to me and it caused my front passenger strut to seep. That happened at 45K, and at 78K it still hasn't been replaced. I can't tell that it's seeping, and I can't get it replaced because Honda has a part shortage due to Covid. I'm just waiting until things pick up again. But hey... I still did Imogene Pass 4 days ago :P, still can't tell that there's anything wrong with my ride. By the way, did your CV components fail? Was there clicking when turning?
@digitalmdrealmd91243 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring No the CV is fine. I saw that edmunds video and was really shocked by the results. I'm fighting the same parts delay. Once its repaired I will just have to modify my driving a little. I know theres only a small market but I wish honda would have taken this vehicle a little more seriously and beefed it up so that it can fully keep up with where the AWD wants to take it.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
@@digitalmdrealmd9124 did you see that I just completed Imogene Pass 6 days ago 😃. You can’t ask too many AWD’s to complete that trail. Quite honestly, it only felt moderate in the Passport. We also got a 2021 Ridgeline up
@johnnyphan8723 жыл бұрын
Don't take my word for it but I believe the Passport and the Ridgeline have beefier struts along with beefier suspension components compared to the Pilot. My wife drives a CX5 and I have a Gladiator Rubicon. Her car averages low 20 mpg and gets low 30s to high 20s on the freeway. My truck is getting 17mpg combined, sometimes a little higher per tank and sometimes a little lower, but gets about 20-22mpg on road trips that are all highway. Now her CX5 rides nicer, has better tech, and gets better fuel economy, but honestly the Jeep isn't that far off behind it and is just so capable for what we do. A ridgeline barely gets better fuel economy and I'm sure rides better than the JTR but worse than the CX5. I really wouldn't give up the extreme capability for $10 a week in gas or $100 per trip. With the tires aired down to 20psig and the sway bar unlocked off road it rides better than her cx5 with low profile tires and stiff suspension. But I think it's awesome that you are pushing the Honda platform so much further than anyone would reasonably expect it to go. These are fun trails that I would enjoy running.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the insight! If you watch my channel you’ll see that I regularly run with my friends at @borderline explorer. They have a Gladiator rubicon. You’re correct, the Jeeps (JL/JT) with the 3.6 Pentastar get very similar MPGs. What held me back when I made my purchase was I felt so “BURNED” by a vehicle that the internet said was “reliable”. I had a 2015 FXT and it was so problematic. I told myself that my NEXT vehicle would only be a Toyota or a Honda. I actually tried to but a Tacoma, but when I went to go sit in it… I didn’t fit 🤣. That seating position was absolutely terrible. What in the world was Toyota thinking? I just don’t see why they couldn’t make the cabin taller and give a “truck like” seating position. The Honda dealership was right next door, and since I already researched the vehicle and knew about its capabilities, I thought I’d go check it out. What really sold me was the test drive. I couldn’t believe how quick it was for its size. In retrospect, I’d definitely pick a Jeep JL or JT over a toyota, but the reason I hold onto the Passport (it’s almost paid off by the way, and I could always trade it in) is because it just fits my lifestyle the best. It‘s a very big vehicle inside. I sleep inside of it on ski trips. I’d love to have Jeep capability one day, but I also like my comfort. If they’d only make a wider version of the gladiator, I think I’d be sold. Wide body, 392 Jeep gladiator…. Thatd be the ticket!
@KTMcaptain3 жыл бұрын
@@JonDZ_Adventuring yeah, the inside is quite narrow. That was a consideration for going JT over JL for me. It’s nice to do a beach or shooting trip with 4 adults while packing everything we need in the bed. I also use a bed tent, but don’t think that would be too great for ski trips due to the cold. I definitely considered the ridgeline. Actually one of your videos really pushed me toward the rubicon. When you almost rolled in Moab because the front end just lost grip I thought that was from dependence on traction control which requires loss of traction and momentum to work. With lockers you have to lose grip at all 4 wheels and is just safer for obstacles like that. But I don’t drive anywhere close to what you do. It took me 7 years to put 80k miles on my Subaru, so I have far different considerations. It’s all about understanding what you “need”, vs want, and finding the best solution to fill them. A lot of the Jeep is wants not needs, but definitely being over prepared is something I want.

@@KTMcaptain Well said! I completed Imogene Pass in Colorado 4 days ago. The trail goes all the way up to 13.1K feet! Doing it in a Jeep would definitely be a big WANT, but the Passport and my friends 2021 Ridgeline, We're both lifted 3.5 inches and both have our rear sway bars disconnected (actually drives better overall, feels like it should, not a stiff heavy SUV) made it up with no assistance. Our 1st gen Pilots didn't fair as well, but we had Rubicon JL and JT to help tow them up. Check out my Instagram post: instagram.com/p/CRG10HIAb7L/? There are many truths about their tests on Subarus, but they throw too much negative opinion into them. On the same token, a KZbin channel like Driving sports TV is heavily subaru biased. In their recent video comparing the VW Atlas and Kia Sorento they referred to this vehicles as being much more onroad oriented and said the Outback Onxy XT was more offroad capable than the Atlas. On TFL, the Atlas conquered Gold mine hill. There’s no doubt in my mind that a V6 atlas with its 20:1 crawl ratio would absolutely destroy even the Outback wilderness.

Could you imagine what a Ridgeline EV can do as an overlander? Install a full bumper to bumper of solar panels.
@JonDZ_Adventuring3 жыл бұрын
I think Honda and GM are working on the next EV off-roader. I think the biggest issue is still range. Maybe they can make the entire thing out of solar panel material. I always had the dream of a sprinter van with a roof complete of solar panels. Imagine that! Sadly, at the very most you’ll get 1 to 2 KWh max from the solar panels. That will only provide a large vehicle about 1 mile per hour. How about a diesel plug-in hybrid? Sounds like it would make a lot of sense.

Hi Jon. I didn't see this asked yet so here goes... Have you had ANY problems with your CV joints in your axles due to the more aggressive angle caused by the lift kits you've had? I was one of the first 2nd Gen Ridgeline owners to install the Traxda 2" lift and put 265/60/18 AT tires on. (Also one of Ian's first customers at NoLo btw). However, I only had that truck for 15K miles as I found at that time that I needed more towing capability. YOU, sir, have convinced me to buy a 2022 Passport and I want to lift again, but I will be keeping this one for a long time. So.. again, have you had any problems with your CV axles due to lifting? I will be installing the Traxda 2" again. Thank you for any help you can provide!
@JonDZ_Adventuring2 жыл бұрын
Hi James! My Passport was 2 inches lifted at 8K miles, then 3.5 inch lifted at 51K. I'm on my original axles except for my front passenger because while the 3.5" lift was going in, the threads on the half shaft was damaged. My Passport has 88K miles on the odometer, but because I run 2.5" taller tires, it's really 95K of some rough miles. I also have about 450+ lbs of gear added. The only thing that has gone bad is the PTU (power transfer unit), also known as the transfer case. With the kind of driving I do, the 1/2 quart of fluid should be changed before the 30K mile interval. I plan to do a video where I show how to change the fluid, and how the fluid looks after 5K, 10K, and 15K miles. I don't think anyone that offroads their midsized honda should go beyond a 15K interval. Also, I highly recommend you go with the 3.5inch lift kit. It's actually easier on your axles because it has a 1 inch subframe drop. Dropping the drivetrain creates a less severe axle angle, and with the midsized hondas you get all the gains. You'll end up with 12" at the front skid plate and 16" at your rocker / pinch weld. It puts your midsized honda in a good place to tackle moderate 4WD trails (level 4), like Imogene Pass. I have a 20% discount code "JONDZ20".

@@JonDZ_Adventuring Thank you Jon! Those of us wanting to take our Passports a little further into the unknown appreciate your candor and knowledge. One last question about the 3.5 inch lift. Jon. I’m in the market. How does this compare on and off road to a Cherokee trailhawk elite. I’m thinking of those with the turbo 4 would be very comparable powerwise but with true 4 low and rear locker. For 38-40k they have to be close price wise too. Any experience with those?? Thank you

They’re in a different size class. The KL Cherokee Trailhawks are the most capable AWD vehicles on the market. Crawl ratio: Cherokee Trailhawk: 56:1 Honda passport: 20:1 Rear differential: Cherokee Trailhawk: mechanical rear locker Passport: electronic mechanical limited slip differential. Size: Cherokee Trailhawk: compact Passport: midsized I personally didn’t consider the Cherokee because of the small size.

For legal purposes, during the podcast, they told me not to mention any brands. I was able to sneak in @traxdausa though. I didn’t mean to, but it came out and it stayed in the podcast 😇

Are you running stock axels?

OEM axles are always the best, for any make or model, so yes. I have 163k miles now and still on original rear axles. The fronts have been swapped because of ripped or leaky dust boots. Always go OEM. Aftermarket won’t have boots that can flex as good.

I think it's worth more than gold right now. Yeah, from a financial standpoint, would be awesome to have it right now to sell for top dollar.

Mitsubishi figured out how to make unibody suvs great off road back in the day....Honda is no way near. Too bad they stopped importing them into the US.

Mitsubishi did alot of things well. Take the Evolution 10 for example... it absolutely murdered a Subaru WRX STI, probably still would. But... they don't make them anymore. They have good trucks that they sell in other parts of the world, but they don't sell them here in the USA. The 3rd gen Montero is a decent vehicle. It's full independent suspension might be better than a Honda Passport, but still no where near a 4WD. Nissan also makes a decent independent suspension system in the Armada and the infiniti QX80. The Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 trailhawk has a front disconnecting sway bar. I'd think that these would be better systems than the 3rd gen Montero. Anyways, as said in my video, I wanted a vehicle that mixed things from the FJ Cruiser and the WRX.

And about 1000 miles walk for the spotter because the spotter had to walk every time there is an obstacle on the road which a regular off road vehicle just drive through.

@@georgekarpouzis6108 did that make any sense to you? 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t decipher his comment. Quite honestly, he probably thinks “sending” vehicle through a rock garden is a good idea. Both you and me know that’s a stupid thing to do.

That Capitan seat b.s. is such a pile of shit. As a pro driver comfort means a lot and that's a huge fail that keeps me away from getting a new Honda.

What do you drive as a professional? Does it have comfortable seats? This is the most comfortable vehicle I’ve ever owned and I think many people agree.
