Nice video, we have a stock 2016 1000-5 and have done Hell’s revenge several times. These pioneers are great and thanks for the info on that front spare tire mount I’m getting one!

Those are made by RotoPax. You can buy them from lots of places online including Amazon and RotoPax.com.

I'm surprised that you didn't see/film anyone else out there. Also, were you in 4x4 low fully locked for the ugly obstacles. I would have thought the places that you broke the winch out the Pioneer would have been able to climb under her own power. It's ok to just want to try out the winch also but if you lost the cable or anchor how far would the machine have rolled away? Great enthusiasm and smart bringing camping gear.

Thanks for the comment. We did see two other SXSs while we were stopped to eat some lunch--but no others. It was February, so that may have been a factor in not seeing a lot of others on that trail. On the tough obstacles I was in 4X4 low and locked. The angles of the winch shots are deceiving. That obstacle (Golden Waterfall) was too sketchy without the winch--it was quite a bit steeper, slicker, and longer than it looked in the video. It was also the only obstacle that I saw where a winch anchor had been placed and it was obvious that many people winched at that point. I think the longer wheel-based 4x4s and SXSs could have done it without a winch, but a stock Pioneer would be risky. Agreed that using the winch there was also risky if the line or anchor broke. Believe me, I was sweating it! If you look at this video at 14:08 you get a better angle: The Amazing Golden Spike Trail! | Easter Jeep Safari 2021

Now granted its been awhile (there WAS no 'golden spike' back then, (I was one of the people on the team who 'created' it:) Still, from my recollection, looks like you did a bit of these trails backwards...That tiny wheel base must be a bitch on the seriously steep stuff:) Nice and steady gets er done though good job overall Smart choice to save your rig and winch stuff, that just plain defy's physics:) Thumbs up.

Haha! Thanks. Except for slightly bigger tires, we were running stock. Parts of it were pretty scary--especially the Golden Crack. But, by that time I was so tired I basically just said, "Let's do it."

Would you mind telling me where you found the front bumper mounted spare tire carrier? Did having the spare tire mounted on the front bumper restrict air flow to the radiator and cause overheating problems? Also, I really like your rear cargo set up as it looks to be quite sturdy and can handle the rougher terrain. Would you mind sharing where you got that as well. I'm trying to outfit my new P1000-5D somewhat like what you have done and any help with the items mentioned would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd be careful with the spare tire up front, my 2018 overheats pretty easily without anything in front of it and it's free of mud. I have a front receiver hitch and I can't even carry a couple camp chairs in a hitch carrier without it overheating even in cool weather. I can't believe this guy didn't have crazy overheating problems with that tire completely blocking the radiator! Maybe I just got one of the shitty ones....

@@fomocowboy Thanks for the info. I rather suspected that was the case as he is the only one I have seen using that set up. Must have been a reason. As a professional welder and fabricator I am working on a project that I think will solve the two questions I originally asked about in this post. When I am done I will probably post my project on the Honda SXS Club website. That is my main source in finding information regarding Honda products and the such. I'd be more than happy to send you personally what I come up with if you'd like. Again, thanks for the response.

Sorry for such a late reply. I found that carrier on Amazon and I've only had positive experiences with the tire in that location. No problems overheating. The best part is that the Pioneer is a bit front-light and having the tire there actually improves handling--especially when going up steep inclines. I've felt a definite difference in handling and it's been all positive. The rear rack was manufactured by Brick City in Arizona. They make stuff for several different SXS brands including Honda, Polaris, etc.

My Pioneer is a 2016 and having that spare tire in the front has not caused any overheating issues at all. The added weight in front improves handling.

@@fomocowboy my 2018 overheat without a tire in the front when making a little steeper climbs. That's why I'm upgrading Honda says this is normal I wonder if this is more of an 2018 problem I don't get it

Good job! Spending the night out there in February in a tent is amazing. Is there now a winch anchor at the waterfall? I couldn't quite see what you were hooked to.

Yes, there was a stout winch anchor at the waterfall. Thanks for watching.

Where did you find the front mount spare tire rack or did you build it ?

I found it on Amazon. And it works great. Search for “UTV INC 1.75” Clamp On 4/136 4/137 12x1.25” It made a huge difference to get that weight on the front.

Nice. Overall what was your feeling of the pioneer and how it handled after?
@domwhite663 жыл бұрын
Super impressed! I’ve had it for four years and we take it to Moab every year but I usually don’t do really difficult stuff. We’re mostly there to see the scenery. So, the obstacles we encountered on that trail were more difficult than I have ever done, but I was really impressed with the Pioneer’s ability to negotiate those obstacles. Suspension-wise it’s stock but I do have 28 inch tires, nerf bars, and that rack in the back. Oddly, putting the spare on the front made a huge difference because it tends to be light in front.
