Honda prelude: How to clean fast idle thermo valve(FITV)

In this video I explain and show how to clean the fast idle thermo valve on the fifth generation Honda prelude. I explain and show every step throughout the video. The fast idle thermo valve is controlled by a thermowax plunger. When the engine is cold, the engine coolant surrounding the plunger helps to contract it and which helps allow air to be bypassed into the intake manifold to raise the engine idle for the warmup period. This valve can cause idle issues and many more if faulty or simply not cleaned from time to time.

2:02 Not a Philips screw. It's a JIS screw (there's a little dot stamped on top to indicate this) and requires a JIS screwdriver. Otherwise ... you will round it out.

Thanks for the information👍 but I didn't call it a philips head screw I just said you can use a flat head screw driver to help loosen it carefully without scratching the outside metal part of the valve and also not damaging the plastic slot in the "JIS screw".

@@automotiveobsession7265 It's at 1:36 when you say "Philips" - my bad. *Those* two holding the end cover of FITV are the JIS screws. If you pause at 1:37 you can see the little dot on the top surface of the screw that's still in place.

If it's Japanese you can bet it's a JIS. Vessel brand impact screwdriver is a lifesaver.

thanks for the video. but dude you need to do this on a table on top of a clean rag. you do not put parts on the ground and potentially ruin things with grit and dirt.

Another failure point. Stupid Honda design. Coolant/hoses, what could go wrong? Already has a type of IAC this is so redundant.
