At last..... a reviewer that knows bikes and realises and understands why we really want to ride bikes. And prompts us to think more about what smaller capacity bikes offer good value for money, better fuel economy, better bikes to control and offer more fun whilst being bikes you need to think about what you are doing. So thank you for providing an honest straight forward review with the spirit of motorcycling at its heart.

Could not agree more, I have a 2017 CBR500R and a 2018 Ducati 959 Panigale and I still love taking the CBR out on the mountain roads for blast round where I live. I use it to commute Mon-Fri at 75mpg where it is comfortable with decent wind protection so in my book the bike is a do it all solution.

Ah damn it, you're selling it for me. I want the CBR 500R but I have been reserving because of the cornering. I have alot of winding back roads where I am and I feel like.. ah you know what, if I can get one I will, no holding back. 😂 If I can get this bike I will, if not I'll default to an R3 but this is the one I want.

"smaller bikes" make you better rider. Good to learn, relearn and grow up skills exploring their limits. Some professionals do it.

This bike is directly in my bullseye. Fits all the right places as to where I am in life. Started back in 85 in a Kawasaki 600r ninja and she's still a really fun ride but mostly retired to special days and shows. I've been all the way up the scale into supersports and now I'm done with having my hair in fire all the time. This is perfect for my next move downsizing back into sanity

I have the cb500f. I’m on my full license. I could get a bike with more power but I like thrashing bikes when I want to , billet proof reliability, changing gears, awesome fuel economy, cheap insurance etc. So yeah, I’d like some extra power but the trade offs are numerous. I hate filling up also. This thing just sips petrol and has a huge tank. Love it

I take it to the next level of fun and have risen my 2000 CB500s for the last ten years, I’m constantly in the red zone and with it being 20 years old it’s always shaking and vibrating like mad and I love it. With the 1000cc Fireblade I always got off feeling frustrated unless at the Isle of Man.

Just bought this brand new 2019 CBR 500R and I LOVE IT. Sure, I think the ONLY problem with the bike is how fast you get to RPM's in 1st and 2nd gear, which is kind of a pain, but it's very much manageable as an experienced rider. 1st gear is definitely too fast, but after that it's safe to ride high RPM's!!!!!!!!!! Leave the bike in 4th and 5th gear and IGNORE 6th. Sure, it doesn't have the crazy speed that my 2008 CBR 600RR had, but for my first commuter bike this thing is 100% comfort and gas mileage, AND it DOES have power. First/2nd gear destroys most cars out there, lol.

True that! I’ve got an s1000r and bought an old er6f for commuting on. The er6 gives me more smiles as I can ride it to its full potential.

Would you trade your s1000rr for another 650cc or below parallel twins? I dont think so. I would not trade my rolex sub for a casio gshock even if it glows and has a stopwatch.

I have the CB500X. It's a fantastic motorcycle. It's got such character, it's like a jack Russel, little bike that just wants to take on the bigger ones and pretend it's all scary. If I wasn't such a lanky bugger I would of had the 500R but I fit the X better. I've had more exotic, more powerful and more expensive bikes but somehow the 500 just makes me want to ride and ride .

Its not meant to be a track bike. Its more of a beginners bike. I tried the new ninja 400 but its to small and my knees were up in my chest practically. Don’t get me wrong its a great bike but I found my honda cbr500r to be much more comfortable.

This is one of the reasons I've kept hold of my 1990 CBR400RR NC29. So much more rewarding on the road than most of the bigger bikes I've had. 👍

the issue (in Sweden) is that the CBR500R cost exactly the same as a Kawasaki Ninja 650 :/ only advantage being 5 year warranty out of the box whilst the N650 cost additional €300 or so to extend it to 5 years (from 2 years). Stepping up to the new CBR650R will add another €1600 or so which is ~19% more cost but a whole different bike, along with insurance and maintenance. I really like the looks of the 500R, but it's a tough sell.

I downgrade from a 2018 Kawasaki Z650 to a 2013 CBR500R. The CBR is comparatively considerably quieter with stock exhaust. CBR's weight sits a lot lower in the bike and is much easier to manually handle, and easier to get your leg over with a 28inch leg inseam and being 5ft9. I bought some new fork springs and will be buying some thicker fork oil to stiffen up the front, to be done as one job by my bike mechanic friend. You don't feel the bumps if your weight is going through your bum as it should, but you do see the chassis having a lot of up and down bouncy movement beneath you over bumpy roads. Though your hands have enough weight with the angle you're at on the cbr to not try to make you let go over any terrain, unlike what would happen on the Z650. Where I had to grip tightly, because of the wind and g-force trying to rip me off. I have much more fun on the CBR that does not go to 100 miles an hour under 10 seconds like the Z650 did after i changed down a few teeth and lengthened the gearing out (less gear changing, still lots of talk through rev range).

Thank you for the explanation on the low cc bike and high cc bike difference of mentality of riding. Definitely shows why one should start off low cc first to get experience of riding with good habits and techniques before hopping on a powerful machine that can just brute force through situations.

So is the 2019 CBR500R worth getting over a 2018 CBR500R? I can get a 18 leftover for $4400 compared to $6700 for the 19.

Kevin Barlage they’re identically pretty much the same, ‘19 has gear indicator tho, but I don’t know if that’s enough to spend the extra $$$ for a gear indicator.

You posted this message over 9 months ago LOL I'm probably too late. But the 2019 was completely redesigned. The engine timing was changed as well as the exhaust was changed, it also has a new beefier rear shock. It now has full LED lighting turn signals and headlights and tail lights. Brand new LCD screen. Overall power has improved by 4% and the overall weight of the machine has been reduced. It also holds a little bit more gas then the 2018 model. If that's enough to justify buying over a 2018? well there really isn't no right answer. Everyone will see it differently.

Huge amount: 650 has 4cylinders instead of 2, double the power, and more premium chassis parts. 500 exists to satisfy A2 license restrictions.

As a owner of a 2016 500R I like the look of this bike. But all for one thing the forehead looks a little big. The 16-18 has the black gap coming down, helping breaking things up.
